Mystic, I've added your prize suggestion to the list of official prizes under "ninthly." Thanks for the support.

Just a quick reminder to everyone who would like to participate: Today marks the halfway point in the contest. If you haven't started your entry yet, you have officially squandered 50% of your time! So, um, get started.

For the bugfix / feature requests, James has agreed to give the host of this contest (me) a bugfix or feature request if eight or more games are released by November 30th. So, see? Everybody wins. So let's get those entries worked on. We've got three already. Let's aim for more than ten.

I will be officially requesting Bug 600 for the host feature request. This feature would allow global variables to record specific statistics in battles like hit frequency, miss frequency, how many times a specific enemy type is killed, and so on. This is a valuable resource for custom after-battle scripts that may attempt to read whether your hero is a Chuck Norris or an Urkel.

Just a reminder about released games; we've already got three fresh releases:

Universal Wars
Illusions
Dungeonmen

And one Legends:

Vikings of Midgard

If you haven't played them yet, feel free to give them a try.

Good work, guys. Keep the games coming.

To be precise, it's not a remake so much as a sequel-in-spirit with the creator's blessing. It is also an RPG, which Walrus and Surlaw were not. If you've played Recettear, that is probably a good analogue -- you can theoretically make it through the game using only the shop, but you will probably enjoy the game more *and* do better at it if you indulge in the RPG portion. (Actually, the "do better" bit might not apply to Recettear.)

I realized days after taking that screenshot that I had screwed up the main character's name. Maybe I should be using ${H1} instead.

Oh, is it time for another SCREENSHOT?

I'm super happy with this feature, and I couldn't be any happier. Unlock a new spell or level up an existing one? YOU CHOOSE. Every spell you'll ever learn is spelled out for you. If you are an obsessive character build planner, this is the feature for YOU.

Oh hell yes, I am going to love playing around with that.
Both in the sense of playing the game to its fullest and in the sense of poking at the level-up mechanics from every angle to see if there's bugs to be found. Or have you already done that?

I haven't done any testing beyond making sure that It Works. Not sure what kind of bugs you're hoping for, though. Skill progression is pretty much wide open. If you've learned Bubble, you can learn Bubble 2; there are no other prerequisites. The only restricted skill is each character's ultimate (Grand Finale for our friend Pengler). You'll need to find a special item, the Power Gem, in order to learn an ultimate ability. Each Power Gem can only be used once, so there are some Tough Choices to be made. (There are also four Power Gems scattered across the world, so the Choices aren't irrecoverably Tough.)

You will probably enjoy the flexibility in character specialization, though. For example, the snake is a primarily physical character, and all of his spells include a physical attack. If you pump his Attack, everything he does becomes more damaging. However, if you pump his Magic instead, the secondary effects of many of his spells improve. Venom Fang is a great example: it attacks and inflicts 50/100/150% Magic poison for a very low MP cost. With a Magic build, you've got a really nice boss killer. For randoms, you'll probably get more mileage out of Attack.

All of this... and cooking, too!

Hadn't heard of Recettear so went to play the demo. Is the RPG portion largely for collecting ingredients, or is it more of the focus (I would guess so, based on those screenshots, not to mention the contest theme). Nifty spell learning system.

The concept also sounds pretty similar to Entrepreneur!

Recettear is a bit aimless when it comes to the focus. It's ostensibly a shop management game, and since your merchant level is increased by making in-store transactions and not by dungeoneering, it might be easier (and certainly is quicker) to completely ignore the adventuring half of the game. Your profit margins are smaller for goods you purchase (since you had to pay to get them), but you also spend less in-game time acquiring them.

On the other hand, the meat of the game is in the adventuring, and there's a bit of a feedback loop involved in it. You sell equipment to your adventurers, and they become more powerful and more able to adventure. The high-end equipment must be found or crafted from monster bits. As you adventure, you find more adventurers, who become patrons of your store. And so on.

In Penguin Chef, there's a more direct feedback. You can acquire ingredients at various stores, or you can pick them up from battles. Battles give you money, but you have to invest in equipment in order to survive for long. (A party wipe merely ends your adventuring day, so it's not as bad as it might sound.) Cooking also turns a profit if you don't screw it up.

The biggest difference, though, is the opportunity cost. In Recettear, every adventuring session is (IIRC) two periods you could be tending the store. In Penguin Chef, you use the restaurant (or enter a contest, sometimes) at the end of each day, regardless of the results of your expedition. There's no reason not to adventure, and doing so will make the cooking portion easier.

I think that the best thing about Recettear is that despite the incredibly simple dungeon mechanics and battle system, the boss fights actually end up being pretty fun.

It's a stark contrast to games with a million and a half different mechanics and yet the bosses still are extremely boring.

That's great but the question is, can you still collect rude pictures?
