Dwarf Fortress Thread

So, took the advice from the Minecraft thread and started a Dwarf Fortress thread.

Anywho... Main reason I started this thread is to ask, has anyone ever tried this? Only just stumbled upon it now with my inane Internet wanderings.

Ah, neat, I was hoping something like that had been set up (though I don't understand how it's any different to just running dgamelaunch). But what counts is whether there's a popular server for it somewhere.

From what I understand, there are servers around. Though it's possible to set up your own server to host games. I'd offer to set a server up, my box is certainly powerful enough hardware-wise, but I have a crappy third-world connection that I doubt will be fast enough.

I'm interested in this server played dwarf fortress you speak of.

Check the link in BMR's post! I've never tried it personally, and I don't fully understand what it is. Is it just a way to stream the game in ASCII format or is it actually somehow hacking in multiplayer capability?

From what I understand, it sets up a multi-single player game. Essentially, the game runs on the server, and anyone can drop in and out to take control of the screen. People can watch and chat, but it's not true multiplayer. So if Arnold were to play, he would have control of the game. At any point, Bobby could take control of the game, but he'd have to ask Arnold first.

I'd offer to try hosting a server using dfterm, but a choppy and slow 3rd world connection prolly won't allow me to.
