Is there an easy way to import 1,814 screens into Custom in one go? These movies can be a bit cumbersome, hehe...

Just so you know, that is going to balloon your RPG filesize by 110 mb. There is a good reason why people don't do animation sequences longer than a few seconds using that method.

This page documents the MXS format that backdrops are saved in, if you want to go ahead and try to write a mass-importer: http://rpg.hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/MXS

I can't wait to hear of how you generated those screens using a spreadsheet!

nohrio also has some support for MXS and the other graphics formats. Looking at nohrio/3rdparty/colouruse.py should help, though it's obsolete. I'll pass on this one.

Have you considered making your movie separately from your game and uploading it in a second, optional .rar? It doesn't even have to be a .rpg file, why not make it a proper video file using a different program? You could then distribute it via youtube as well, then give the link on the game's download page, or with a url link in the game's .rar

This is especially applicable if this is an intro movie we're talking about. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd be perfectly happy getting my first taste of a new game through promotional material not included in the game itself (as long as it's relevant, of course!) Something along this line has recently happened with the animated trailer for the upcoming Pokemon games, which is far more impressive than anything we'll be seeing in-game.

By the way, "1,814 screens" is an awfully specific number. Have you already finished all of them? If so, can we see one?

That's actually not a bad idea... That way, I won't have to deal with dinky 320x200 resolution for the videos... I shall re-render the video! Though, as they say in my language, "Mumurahin ako nang computer ko" which essential translates to, "My computer is going to be really rather angry and will curse and swear at me"

Hmm, and if I go that route, I can up the frame rate...

I can do better than showing you one of the screens, here's a link to a draft (sans other background animation, e.g. soldiers fighting, scrolls and books opening, faces, etc...) of the video.

I haven't added in all of the other things yet, as I first wanted to see how possible it was to actually do this. At key points in the narrative (e.g. "And then came mankind") there will be stills or animations in the background relevant to the text being displayed.

Anywho, I'm off to re-render the video, cheers!

VIDEO

You were considering uploading that into CUSTOM?
That was a hilariously bad idea! You're trying to make an RPG for the Sony Playstation, but the OHR is kind of restricted to things more on the Super Nintendo level of quality! I fully advocate keeping the game and the video separate, and your other idea of taking stills from the video and inserting them at key points in your game is pretty slick too. You could put "abridged versions" into the game as the 320x200 backdrops.

There's lots of reasons why I call uploading a 1,814 frame movie into CUSTOM a bad idea, but the biggest one is this: what if you need to edit something? A single mistake in your video (and there are some, I'll PM you the details with some timestamps) would mean digging through CUSTOM and either deleting or replacing screens en masse, every single time you wanted to correct or change something.

So, I'd say this discussion is done, I'm glad I saved you from doing much more work than you needed to. And your game is looking exponentially more interesting, keep spreading the word about it! I wish you luck, keep up the good work.

Hah! V

Yeah, perhaps I'm being a teensy-weensy bit overambitious in that sense, hehehe.

Indeedy, this discussion is done.

Now... On to the next development arc, npc favor!

Neat, what program did you use to render that terrain? Unfortunately I do have to complain that it's too long and repetitive.

110MB of backdrops isn't necessarily bad, if they compress very well when zipped. However because of the nature of the video, they would compress *very* badly, and you should use a proper video format.

No, you would just reimport the video.

I used the GIMP to create a basic terrain mask, Wilbur to erode the terrain and make it look more realistic (better mountains, canyons, rivers, etc...), Terragen for the actual animation, FFMPEG to stitch all the images together, the GIMP again to make the text, and finally OpenShot to put it all together.

Aye, I've abandoned the importing into Custom, but I'm thinking of creating a proper video for an intro (if I actually make an intro video). Either way, the work won't really go to waste, the generated terrain I can use to make an in-game map, a single screen, or perhaps a series of different screens, depending on where in the world Carmen Sandiego the player is.

Wow, I had figured that you used Terragen for the whole thing rather than just rendering. I'm not too familiar with Terragen, but I thought that's what it was intended for. Hadn't counted on the existence of general purpose heightmap generators.

It's a pun, as I was writing "where in the world the player is", Carmen Sandiego suddenly popped into my head. Depending on how old you are, you'll either have absolutely no idea who she is, or have fond memories of trying to track her down. Doesn't really have any bearing on the sentence, just some silliness on my part Hurr

Made me giggle. And got that song stuck in my head....

As a suggestion, you could just easily have the camera pan over various maps, with all that written in text with no boxes. Simple and crude, yes, but if done right even simple things can be powerful.
