Ridiculous Games Contest 2012 Voting/Judging

Here we go. The final battle approaches. Time to do or die.

Here are our distinguished entries:

Charbile - My Little Gahn

MasterK - Trolls!

Moogle1 - Memento Mori

NathanKarr - Karrible.RPG

RMsephy - Super Harem Builder 2012

SDHawk - Pilgrimage

Spoonweaver - Clam digger

Surlaw, Gizmog, and James will be judging each entry based upon two criteria:

(1) How well they match with the game's chosen villain's theme, on a scale of 1 (Perfect match) to 7 (Couldn't be further from the theme). If you believe another villain's theme better suits a game and decide to rank it on that criteria, I won't stop you. If you decide to give every game a rank of 1 (Perfect match), I also won't stop you.

(2) The ranking of each game from 1 (Best in show) to 7 (It makes Magnus look good). I'd ask that if the game was designed to be absolutely awful that you take that into account, but it's not a requirement. You can also have games share the same ranking as well if you like, I won't stop you either.

Judges also must use full paragraphs explaining their reasoning behind their decisions. You don't have to agree with that judge's reasons, although you ARE free to rebut them, and judges are free to change their minds.

The community at large will ALSO be voting, however they will simply be voting for each entry on a scale of 1 (Best) to 7 (Worst).

ALSO, you see that poll at the top of the thread? That's your chance to give any one particular game a small boost.

So here's the voting algorythm:

Code:
[Judge1 Vote x Villain Theme] + [Judge2 Vote x Villain Theme] + [Judge3 Vote x Villain Theme] + Total Community Vote + Anonymous Poll Results + SECRET CONTEST BONUS = Total Score

Voting stops once all three judges finish reviewing and scoring each game.

And of course GOOD LUCK!!
To friends long gone, and those I've yet to meet - thank you.

Could you remind us what villain the entries were trying for? A whopping NONE of the download pages specify.

EDIT: And for anyone else's reference, here's how Fenrir defined the villains:

Quote:
Billy, who aims for the most terrible game ever.
Slither, who plans to take another game and make an OHR flavor to it.
Vlad, who with his theatrical flair demands a movie.
Gahn, who who desires a chaotic game that changes its own in-game rules.
Dr. Mu, the mad scientist who demands a game be made that has never been attempted before.
And Cthulhu, who threatens his players with a game that will give them night terrors.

This is what I've gathered from reading through the contest thread.

Nathan Karr - Billy (or maybe Cthulhu?)
Master K - Billy
Charbile - Gahn
Spoonweaver - Dr. Mu (or maybe Cthulhu?)
RMSephy - Dr. Mu
Mogri - Dr. Mu
SDHawk - ???

I had thought it was new to the OHR, not just new to video games basically Though, I'm pretty sure my game is still safe.

And since FENRIR, states this rule:
Quote:
If you believe another villain's theme better suits a game and decide to rank it on that criteria, I won't stop you.

I'd think that the chosen villian matters less than the villian the judges most think the game is designed for.

Anyways, I might as well repost my votes here, so they're are all nice and legal.

Fenrir, can we get a rules check? I'm pretty sure it's 'whatever', but just curious.

Before the villains' rule sets, there was a "first rule". I figured what Kezef said was the one to go with, since he was the psuedo host. I knew this would trip me up, because it was like... do we make the best game we can or the best worst or argh

First and foremost, you must remember this is a RIDICULOUS GAMES CONTEST...

..and your game must be too. Such is the nature of this contest. Proceed wisely.

Choose Billy, and you must make the most terrible game you possibly can.

If you choose Gahn, your game must change its style, its gameplay abruptly and randomly.

If you go with Mu, you must try to make a game that is unique. Something not attempted before.

If we are going to interpret that literally, then your game must be a ridiculous games contest.

Gentlemen, I submit to you that Memento Mori is a contest of ridiculous games.

I resisted posting about Memento Mori when I posted my vote, but since you brought it up; I don't think it's very ridiculous nor do I think it's something that's never been done before. It's basically meat boy. If Mu's rule meant something never done ON OHR than you're only barely pulling it off because sidescrollers have been done a lot on the OHR.
I honestly have no problem with the game and even played it till I had 33 flags, and finally noticed that that piece of sod wasn't going away. However, it clearly wasn't made with this contest in mind.

And this is why I was reluctant to enter it in the contest to begin with. (Aside: Not having read the rules very closely, I thought that Dr. Mu's theme had something to do with tech demos.)

I wouldn't say that sidescrollers have been done "a lot" in the OHR, though, but if that's holding you up, then let me point you to the replay feature. If you can find anything similar to that in an OHR game, I will concede the argument Smile

Even though I'm not obligated to, I'll give my thoughts on each game.

1) My Little Gahn

This makes me laugh like nothing else. I was able to read most of the intro. I was able to see influences from all over the place, and the music was breathtaking.

2) Clam Digger

It was fun and silly; didn't take that long to figure out and I liked the sense of its aesthetics.

3) Karrible.RPG

It's supposed to be anti-racist, but I don't know if I got my message across correctly.

4) Trolls!

I played it for half an hour before giving up. I like the Trollslayer character; I want him to appear in more stuff now. I might dedicate an afternoon to finding out if this game actually ends like it's supposed to sometime.

5) Super Harem Builder 2012

Some of the stuff is weird enough to make me laugh, but more often than not it's just really glitchy. I'm not all that into harems anyway, so this didn't have much appeal to me. Only game in the contest where I didn't like what I was looking at.

6) Memento Mori

A platformer, which is my second-favorite genre of game. Just didn't come across as terribly terrible or ridiculous, and I got bored after the first wall that told me to go get more flags.

7) Pilgrimage
I didn't bother taking a screenshot. It does a good job holding to the spirit of the contest, just not of making me want to play it.

7. Memento Mori - Dr. Mu would play it.

Who is Top Dog?
1. Clam Digger
2. Pilgrimage
3. Memento Mori
4. Trolls!
5. Super Harem 2012
6. My Little Gahn
7. Karrible.RPG

Words?
My Little Gahn
RIDICULOUSly good scripting! But looks aren't everything! The game is
a Hollywood remake of Nathan Karr's magnum opus Weegee, but without
the heart that made that game a classic. The OHR Heart. A point is
automatically deducted from this game for its title, which should have
been Star Quest II: The Wrath of Gahn. A missed opportunity that leaves the audience scared and angry. I assume all of this game's budget was spent on marketing due to its use of stock footage. The game certainly would have been better if it had had at least another $500,000 to work with. I couldn't pay attention to the game's dialogue because I simply can't relate to something set in an environment as alien as an office, and also horses don't have wings! I assume the flying horse scene was a production error because how else can you explain that? Horses don't fly. Also what is a Charbile??

Trolls!
RIDICULOUSly boring! A true call back to the glory days of Terrible Games Contests. It looks bad and plays worse. It's perfect! I don't know if the game has an ending because I threw up everywhere when I played it. I thought trolls had more hair than this? Is the hero a barber and his customers are angry because he took too much off the top? IS THAT the game?

Memento Mori
RIDICULOUSly competent! I didn't feel any fear or loathing in this game but I did die a lot. Sadly I learned nothing!! I like that your guy farts when he jumps, that is a good feature and it explains why it's so dangerous for him to be around open flames and also sand. This game is
a commentary on the inevitability of death, the sands are the sands of time, in an hour glass, and you can look back on your memories but you CAN'T change the past.

KARRIBLE.RPG
RIDICULOUSly good title screen! You gain two points for having Geordi LaForge in the game but LOSE one for not letting me play as him. The writing is super stupid! Really stupid. I got bored of the writing but I liked all the pretty flashing lights and the maptiles are superb. You should copy Trolls! battle system and the game will be a better game but then it wouldn't be a game at all, it would be an examination. You gain one point for making a Mega Man RPG about an alien invasion but lose TWO by making the aliens human instead of Klingons, Romulans, Hortas, and Remans. What were you thinking?

Super Harem Builder 2012
RIDICULOUSly menu driven! This game is the true sequel to Pepsi Ranger's 80's simulator Entrepreneur. If anything I would say it is the Pokemon Yellow to Pepsi Ranger's Pokemon Red. I couldn't figure out how to get a Psyduck and I didn't have anyone to trade with but I like the
music! If ever you wanted to be the best 80's Guy possible you should play this but you should also play Entrepreneur but I think Harem Builder has the edge because you can't charm your way past fire hydrants in Entrepreneur, you need to serve them coffee.

Pilgrimage
RIDICULOUSly post modern! I like how much I hated the RPG part but liked the end part with all the words, this game proves decisively that visual mediums are boring. They are boring, and video games are boring, but reading, that is still fun. I had fun. I want to be a rock person too but maybe not because they all died I guess. This is the OHR's Nier, only political.

Clam Digger
RIDICULOUSly good intro! It is probably the best intro I have seen, I suppose the honest truth is this is a game I can relate to, because I know what it's like to be a car. There's a lot of social commentary in this one too! The commentary is that society is bad. If you can win the game, you rock! It's what experts call "Nintendo Hard" and there are lots of dogs and birds in it so it's a lot like Ninja Gaiden to be honest.

While those aliens aren't supposed to be humans, this would have been a better idea. I also don't know if those aliens would have fit the color motif I was going for; I'll have to look up what Hortas are because I'm not as big of a Star Trek nerd as I should be.
