Looks like I joined just in time, my question is, if I post my game, say, in the next couple weeks, am I able to submit it in the contest?

Wait, Spoon, are you sure? My understanding of this contest is that it *does* allow new games. I don't see anything obvious that would disqualify Meowskivich from entering a game.

...Although if new games and previously released games are going to be voted in separate categories, then I think it would be in Meowskivich's best interest to wait until the contest begins before making a public release of a game.

Yes, I was responding to the "if I post my game, say, in the next couple weeks" part.

You have to wait 3 months to submit something to this contest.

Hmm....I suppose I will wait on it then. As much as it pains me....but I suppose I can add more stuff whilst waiting. My biggest issue with getting this game released really is just music, but I could wait, I guess.

I'm completely against this. If you did that you'd basically be deciding the outcome yourself.

Well, not exactly. I'd consider condorcet voting if every game had at least 50% voter representation on hand. That's the only way that system is fair and accurate. If any game receives less than 50% voter representation, then I'd have to default to score voting, which, as it turns out, was necessary for Heart of the OHR 2010.

I agree with what FnrrfYgmSchnish is saying. A point system tends to favor the votes of the insane. If a person goes and votes the games he likes as 10 and the games he dislikes as 1 then his totals actually count more then the votes of the people that carefully weighed their scores based off of graphics gameplay and enjoyability (or whatever system they used) In short, a point based system gives troll votes more power then serious votes.

Again, this is a valid concern, but it wasn't an issue in the first contest's voting phase. The majority of games that earned low scores earned them across the board, and vice versa for the high scoring games. No one can deny the polar opposites in quality and popularity between Motrya and Hero. The fact is, everyone who voted in 2010 voted with consideration of how he felt about each game. And with the exception of Vikings of Midgard's rank, it's unsurprising how closely mirrored the score list and the condorcet list are to each other. I think people will vote honestly, especially if I were to enact a private voting policy -- which I most likely won't since public voting seems to inspire more votes from those who would otherwise forget to vote. The first contest did have its share of games receiving scores ranging from 1 to 9 (Okedoke comes to mind), but those who scored them a 1 really hated them, and those who scored them a 9 loved them. In a ranked vote, the results would be more or less the same. The one they hated would touch the bottom of the list, even though someone else might rank it near the top. The end result would be the same either way. The difference is, at least with averages no game is left fighting against the odds, whereas in condorcet voting, or any kind of ranked voting, the game most left off the voter charts from having not been played is the one that inevitably loses to the one that everyone has played. If Chronoboy Adventures scores an average 4 points lower than Vikings of Midgard, but takes a higher rank in the condorcet vote because six more people bothered to play it, then something's wrong here.

That's my feeling on the matter.

Yes, you bring up a valid problem. With this voting method, any game that is not voted on at all is effectively treated as if it is at the bottom of the list.

There is probably a variant of Condorcet designed to fix this problem, but I don't know what it is off the top of my head.

The old voting system was not that bad. I just love to start debates about voting systems :)

You could always combine the 2, and assign point values to the places in each ordered list. (1st place being 10 points 2nd being 9 and so on) Then you could average the scores at the end. I think this takes care of both problems

Just for kicks lets see how this method would work on Mogri's test case.
We'll say 1st place is 4 points,2nd 3, 3rd 2, and 4th is 1.

1. Wandering Fish
2. Legendary Carrot
3. Renegade Lawyers
4. Lonely Cactus

1. Legendary Carrot
2. Wandering Fish
3. Lonely Cactus

We'd get:

Wandering Fish 11/3 {3.66}
Lonely cactus 10/4 {2.5}
Renegade Lawyers 4/2 {2}
Legendary Carrot 7/2 {3.5}

So, just to clarify, we can start a game now, and when the contest thread pops up, we can submit it?

If so, i'm working on a game for HotOHR. It's script heavy...I have a daytime system and trade skill system in place already. If you want those things too, there's always my tech demo, Master K's Tech Demo.

Yep!*

Be aware that the 2012 Heart of the OHR Contest will be slightly different than the 2010 contest. Not enough to shake things up or make everyone panic, of course, but just enough that you may still want to read the rules before submitting. I'm hoping that this year's contest will be more accommodating to each release category.

*I don't actually encourage you to hold back a game's release because of a contest. If it's ready now and worth sharing now, then you should submit now. It it's incomplete at the time of release, you could always submit it as a rereleased game, provided it had at least thirty minutes worth of new content. Or, if it's ready now and complete now, you could just start working on your next great idea.

@Pepsi: I can't submit anything right now. I started my game TODAY. I'd love to hold it back until HotOHR, because I think it could be really good. Provided I hold on to this idea long enough.

Apophenia will be returning for it's second HotOHR contest!

I may or may not change the name though, any suggestions?

It is a rather unusual name. It's fine. All I could think of besides it, would be something with either 'pulp' or 'noir' or 'hard boiled' in the title.
