Riis' Project "Ordeal Paradise"

I thought that making this type of thread to talk about my project and whatever else relevant could be a very productive thing.

Currently the project I am more interested in doing is the harder of my two, Ordeal Paradise. This project is based from a comic project I'm working on, with the game's story involving some characters from it at a point they abilities/powers are well manifested along. The overall story takes place well in the future setting, with large war machines and monster animals included.
I'd provide images at the moment of what I have but I'm figuring out how I'll present them.

[part1-Story, characters and damage types]

The game's story takes place on an island resort named O'Dale Paradise, hours after a shark attack incedent that destroyed the hero gang's boat and scattered them out to sea with the islands in sight. Reviving on the shores of O'Dale, superhero and superhero actor Erik Mayflowers is met by his shadow counterpart. Discovering it has already unleashed not to bad of an evil on the island. Erik ventures into the paradise resort to find his lost friends, foil his shadow's scheme, and enjoy the rest of his late birthday vacation in unadulterated peace with a progressively degrading hope this is the only ordeal he will face.

I intend of it to have multiple endings. The main plan so far on how to affect it is whom you find and rescue first.

The main roster will include nine characters, 8 of which on another site I have posted concept arts for. One potential problem I have created for myself is each of the character's size to each other. Erik(hero) being 5'8" himself, while his largest friend who stand(hovers actually) tall Ezekeil(psychic pirate) towers 12feet tall and he has four arms (giving him the ability to preform moves twice in the game), while his smallest friend Ash(nerd mage) is a meter tall. On the thankful side I have already made walkabout sprites for both Ezekiel and Ash, and a battle sprite for Ezekiel first because I knew that'd be a problem. Only real downside is that the graphics will be like SuperNES or just NES like, without outlines.

All of the characters have a distict background, but none except Erik's have anything to do with the conflict of this game. All, but 1, of the main cast including Erik is not human, so some of them have some great visionary perks (such as seeing the UV septrim) which is part of how some boss fights happen and how a few of them have great HIT stats. The hero each have their weaknesses and strengths to the 20 different damage types.
[Damage Types=Intented after effects and general effectiveness]
    1Fire= Impairs Special Defenses, great against furry things and avians
    2Water=Impairs Speed and sometimes strength, great against heavier foes
    3Lightning=Impairs Physical Defenses, some stuns too, effective vs. machines and engineered races
    4Earth=Impairs HIT, effective vs heavier foes
    5Wind=Impairs Evasion and sometimes strength, effective vs large foes
    6Cold=Impairs Speed and Strength, effective vs scales and dragons
    7Mind= impairs special attack, effective vs. non humans and the insecure
    8True=attacks are real, some are direct damage
    9False=attacks are imaginary, and can bring healing joy and laughter to most targets
    10Light=Color based and work best on darker enemies, useless to whites
    11Dark=Color based and work best on lighter enemies, heals blacks
    12Healing=Heals anything alive
    13Poison= Not very effective to humans
    14Demonic= Different from Magic, always powerful or helpful, but not effective vs. repeat victims
    15Magic=Imagination at it's finest,usually needs time to cast, Not effective vs other nerds
    16Ultimate= The ultimate power, it's more common than you'll think, but no worries, it's just normal special damage
    17Kinetic= Normal damage
    18Striking=Damage made by blunt force
    19Slashing=Slash attacks from swords, claws, or discs
    20Peircing=damage made from bullets, arrows, or spears

Sounds pretty awesome, Rii! The only thing that scares me is the mention of giving some heroes significantly better AIM stats than others. A lot of games seem to have heroes miss way too much which is really, really annoying. I mean if it still works, all for it! Just be careful that the average AIM stat isn't low enough that it's a pain!

@ncw64: I will. :3 My brother played a D&D game on the PSP years back, and he said it was terrible and rediculouly long because everybody missed all of the time. I sure hope I don't make that happen. :C


[part2:Vangores, Character's Gear, stats, and skills]

The vangores are a super sentient race engineered for war and designed to evolve and adapt to whatever their overall situation demands. They all have very weak nerves (so a low voltage shock can take them down), enhanced regeneration, enhanced sight, enhanced strength, always muscle bound, hard boned, extremely heavy due to density, plus a special vision to spot other powerful enemies, shapeshift, cannot feel pain, and can produce their own ultimate power unlike normal races can. They've been around for over 200 years. This is relevant because Ezekiel and some enemies are vangores and they are both weak to lightning(200%damage), and other vangores are made tough to take down.

In the overall story all of the characters have thier powers, but for some force on the island resort has taken everyone's original powers away and bestowed its inhabitants with new powers (including those who didn't have any in the first place). As the characters progress and fight more, their new power grows and they'll understand them more enough to recreate thier original skills.

In addition, most of the characters are stuck with whatever they had on at the time of the shark attack, also with thanks to the shops not getting imports and running out of full cloths to sell. Only one slot is for their attire.

Each character uses at least 3 weapons each, so the equipment system will be a main weapon, then in the 4 equipment slots, a secondary, tertiary weapons, their overall attire, and an accessory. All characters in their second attack menu will constist of those weapons. Also because of the dangers they all faced prior to this, they all have a way to heal themselves.

The character's HP will be judged by their size, with average to largest size going from 20, 40, then 60. The AIM and EVA(evade) Stat defaults at 100 each. The average Speed stat will be 18. The mystery stat will be used for firearms. The character's stats default stats are affected by thier perks and bodies. Where they all have thier perks, they also have flaws.

In a nutshell:
1>Erik is a Mark 1 Vangore. He is stuck with swimming trousers, and is of average size. He has hyperawareness perks that works best the more uncovered he is, and his sight is great and highly receptive. He has a very low capacity of power, so he compresses the cost of his skills to make up for it. His main weapon are his sword, while his other weapons are a gloves and sheild(middle-small). His move set involve force manipulation, allowing him to exert massive waves of force to KO mobs. He also knows lightning and fire magic; in addition he also knows healing rain magic from his freind Ash.

2>Ash is a fat rat. He is stuck with only his custom underwear and is very small (meter high). His sight is receptive, able to see UV spetim but is also terrible and he is without his glasses/contacts. His size and fitness makes it hard to keep up with his larger and faster friends. He has a great potential and capacity of magic. His main weapon is a staff, while his talismans act as magic boosters, while his tri prong boomerang is for attack on the fly. He is a mage because he reads too much fantasy, and can cast two versions of any elemental spell: a quicker, stronger single target blast, or a longer, yet powerful AOE. He can still tell which blur is who alot of the time. He is able to spot some of the bosses because of his vision.

3>Rhona is a white she-wolf. She's been stuck wearing a tank suit and is of average size, but is alittle over 6 feet. Her sight is average. She is whiter than Erik is, making her totally immune to light prism attacks if her tank suit was also white. She is not agile compared to others however. Her running speed is average and she is out of shape from being bed ridden for a year. Her main weapon is an axe, while her secondaries are spears and a dual prong boomerang. She is a Dragon/Demon Knight, some of her skills are inspired by dragons, even learned from a few, and other skills ultilize life stealing demon magic. She was already a victim of a demon ritual, so she is resistant to demon magic, plus because of that ritual she also has a servant who won't go away.

4>Viktorya is a large black bear. She is stuck with shorts, a short shirt and a short overshirt and is quite large (8feet). SheBear=She fat, so...yeah she's quite fat. :3 Because of that her agility is horrid but cold attacks don't work well on her. Her sight is augmented and was great to begin with. Her overall body is enhanced with augmentations, magic, and LOTS of drugs making her superstrong. Her main weapon is a single disc launcher, with her right arm being free to mess people up (gloves), and talimans to boost her demon magic. She is a Tank, thanks to her obsession to winning. Her skill set is composed of brawling, ultilizing her strength, or demon fire magic she learned from her demon partner. Having been burned herself by demon magic, demon magic in general don't work so well, but she is still fluffy and more flamable than the others.

5>Ezekiel is a Mark 3 Vangore, with a much different body than one would expect. He is stuck with his custom underwear, cause his cloths were digested, since he was eaten by the shark in a single gulp and he is extremely large (12feet). Dispite his size, he is the fastest character of the gang thanks to his psychic power allowing him to hover instead of walking. His sight is supurb. He has four arms and super coordination, allowing him to act more than once. He is a speedy psychic pirate and he can steal items. His strength and special attack stats are supurb. However he never coped with pain well, even with a high HP count, all his defenses are horrid. [EDIT NOTE:Avian features were part of a redesign I never finallize, but never came to like before I came to the realization of what it was I was trying to accomplish in doing so was never needed. Going back to original settings.]

6>Ebon is a black dragon and is 14 feet tall. He wears royal jewerly. He is grossly obese so the cold doesn't affect him as much. His sight is average. He's cold blooded so his speed stat suffers. Being sheltered and pampered, he sucks at physical combat. He hovers by sitting on clouds created from his water magic so he can dodge well(average). He uses a wand(staff) to amplify his magic, while he has a special lens for his dark eye's light attacks, and a special remote for his gagets and technolgy. He is a Water Mage/Technican while his light attacks are just natural much like his other dragon moves. He has the most HP and SP, but is not as powerful as Ash. Using his dragon moves will speed him up.
*Finding him will mean you'll find his brother near by.

7>Sol is a bloated red dragon and Ebon's big brother dispite being only 10 feet tall. He wear fanged or demonic jewerly. He is grossly muscular and easily the strongest of them all. He has over 500 shadow beasts(mist demons of pure ultimate power) trapped in his abdomen, which makes him bloated. He is cold blooded and he just like Ebon are initially slow to act. His sight is lacking due to aging. Alone, he can't dodge well on the ground thanks to his plated hide. His hide is extremely thick and sturdy. His main weapon is a dagger, while his secondary is a artifact, and he can weild anyone else's tertiary weapon. He is a Dark Tank,Medic,Supporter and Assassin. He has secrets and knows the anatomy of most living things, so he knows how to kill someone or heal them with supurbly. He can use his shadow beasts to enhance any of his allies, and uses them to better himself(so his flaws are covered) and to have total control over his fire. However his black powers do come with weakness. He is also weak to ultimate attacks, mind attacks, more weak to light, and there is a chance everytime he uses his black power that he will lose all of his SP.
He and Ebon are the worst speed stats and are found later.

8> Reinhardt is a english human and also a werewolf, but he can't tranform with his new power so he's just a normal human. He saw the whole thing coming and kept his jacket, pants, shirt, and shoes on during the entire trip. He is average all around. He can withstand poisons better than any of his friends. He wields a great sword, anyone's secondary, and a talisman. He is an Ice Spellblade, ultilizeing the magic of ice to wipe out mobs and enhance any of his abilities. His knowledge of the ultimate power gives him the edge and makes him capable of inflictly true damage easy, but all of his attacks impairs one of his stats. He's a nerd from the distant past, and see alot of the happening during the game coming except of two things.
*He's the last of the main cast to join.

9> Number 9 is a special one. His stats are identical to Erik's. However regular healing will not work on him, and false damages hurts him. Only Dark damage will heal him.
*He makes an excellent tool to finding out what a certain type of enemies weaknesses are.

In a later stage of the planing and concepts and development, I might add in guest characters if anyone wants to. Afterall this isn't a commercial project xD

I'm trying to keep it breif, surely it will be next post as I'll take about non linear plans Grin

I managed to convince JSH to make Scan actually function like it should in Motrya after the OHR got counter attacks implemented. Basically it's a counter attack that sends messages about the enemy.

You'd have to make a set of attacks for every enemy though, but it's certainly possible.

[Part3:Non Linear Plans and the Hotel]

It's not concrete yet, because I'm still in the middle of writing out all the juicy details, and drawing out more doodles into my concept notebook.

I'm thinking about doing multiple endings. So far the only concrete thing that affects the outcome big is at the earliest depending on whom the player finds first, but that would mean I'd have to do alot more work for it than I could stand. However, I could use that idea after a few of the gang is found and rescued.

One thing as for distractions I have decided on from the get go is the conflicts revolving around a few specific characters during the vacational misadventure. The type of conflicts that got spurred on the insland resort. One example is when you rescue Rhona, her tail was cut off, and she has been looking for it since, not that she really needs to find it to reattach it when she can find Sol and have him simply renew her stub back into a tail, not that she is actually counting on that alternative. She won't give up on the search until they leave O'Dale Paraside(end of the game), but she knows it's too dangerous to set out on that quest alone. Another is for helping Ebon and a mad scientist with the lack of technology on the island, helping them both will unlock tech skills for at least Ebon to use. All of which are optional because some of them are an issue only because they are closed off from the outside world.

The party will contain at least 21 members. I intend on locking Erik's slot (the leader's slot) so he can't be switched out with anyone, partly because it gives me more room to have him complain how much about why he's the leader and everyone else is at the hotel having a fun time in the middle of a crisis. Pretty much, all of the 'found' inactive members will be at the O'Dale Hotel and other locations across the paradise resort having fun playing around and resting, while Erik and three friends unfortunate to tag along with him into the wilderness fight mosters. Basicly the only way you can switch out your members is at the hotel and rest areas. That part at least is definite.

With thanks to a demo MasterK made and the plotscripts he left for us to learn from, I'll be able to make the characters have multiple costumes. It won't apply to all of them though; considering the limits and possible guess characters. I will try to get them all (of my original cast).

Next part might be alittle disorganized, but oh well. Maybe I'll post up some (contempary)concept arts and maybe screenshots too when I finish up my test build.

I'm thinking 350-500 pixels is a good size. Right?

[part4Sound and Concepts]

Alrighty, I've just made account at Imgur, so now I'm trying out the screenshots. Pretty much the I drew up a small doodle using the main character as a template to help myself organize color palettes for sprites and models of either the same structure or color. A great example would be the costumes, enemy variants and twin siblings.
Sure that part is a bit of a spoiler, Erik's twin sister can be recruited, but there are requirements to unlocking her. She is optional and a superheroe's sidekick, so she'll have alot of support skills and special skills of her own


I had trouble with the transition from walkabouts to battle sprites because of the wiegth and length dimensions. It hit me when I thought about how the first Final Fantasy looked. Instead of making new and more or possibly worse looking sprites, I'll just port the walk abouts and make them do more actions. It provides so much more space and freedom than the opposed. PS: forgot to make a 'dead" sprite
This is excellent for two of my character's hurt, weak and death sprites.


It was after I loosen up on the proportional issues I had with the small limit. Size differences between a meter high fat rat and an eight foot tall black bear. Basicly all of the characters' walkabout who are average/small size are roughly about the same height, while the large size is about 1-3pixels taller, then the supersize will just fill up the box....roughly.


All and all it's going good. Soon I'll give the costume thing a try.

I got Famitracker for the audio, and I am a tad, if not just simple lost with this. It's not that I don't know how to work it, I simply can't peice it together well. I am definitely going to get help for this. The soundtrack mainly, I might be able to get the rest of the sound on my own.

In the meantime I am figuring out the new name for the vangore species. Since a dude help me with the name, and 4 years later I am now working to discredit him(being that name is the only thing he is responsible for), since finding out Van Gore is actually a real name of several individuals bugs me alot, among other things. It's pretty much my fault for not googling it sooner but oh well. My others reasons concerning the said guy are not relevant, but I have to be calling them something. Otherwise I can't have any "Oh no! It's a ???" moment, like "Watch out! It's a behemoth!" It's also why you see in all mention of Vangore struckout.

I don't know what I'll be talking about next time. More on story maybe? I don't like mentioning spoilers. Some players are in it for the story and suprises, so I wouldn't take that away by being such a blabbermouth. ^^
