Like you said, it's all opinions. My method of attempting to understand other people's opinions is to challenge and debate them. That's what I've been taught to do! Some people love it, some hate it. Quel dommage...
Okay, on the topic at hand. I see we are approaching this from totally different angles. No problem.
You talk about Simon having no personal experience (Garfunkel as well) and I suspect you are probably right. There is a different between saying something, and saying something that you mean. And yeah, that'll affect your experience as a listener, and their experience as performers. But if we take this concept and apply it to a different creative medium, it ceases to have any real meaning. Neither Goethe or Shakespeare had all of the experiences they wrote about, but it didn't stop their work being very profound, honest and sincere. I argue that it should be no different for Simon and Garfunkel. The most prominent thing is that his [Simon's] lyrics are really just poetry set to music. But I mean, as a genre piece, that's how poetry is.
I get that some people dont like the 'sterile' delivery of the songs. I do. But the fact that it is disconnected from the lyrical content is part of the appeal. I'm just being given a topic in a very frank and direct way.
Haha, it's funny that you mention Shakespeare, because I think he's overrated too. That said, he's such a craftsman, or perhaps just so knowledgeable about people, that he can sometimes still come across as real (King Lear, moments of Hamlet). And honestly, I'm not going to pretend that Dylan has lived something close to all of his stories (Isis???), but like Shakespeare, he's seen enough, and he just seems to know so much about what real people are like down at their core, to say nothing of his mastery of his craft. Paul Simon just doesn't seem to approach this level for me.
But all of this, from the writing perspective, isn't as important for me as the delivery perspective. You said it. S&G often sound sterile in their flawless vocal deliveries. For me, that's an important negative.

I adore the traditional music of Tuva, Bhutan and Mongolia. Having devoted many hours of practise to it, I can sing Kargyraa and Sygyt. I haven't been able to really develop any of the other styles yet.
That sounds interesting! Do you happen to have a recording you could share?
I find this music very special: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwANedEkqaY. I also like some of the work of Kongar-ol Ondar very much.
I like some Ragnarok music, alot of rock and some techno when im tired.Pockie Pirates is the latest side-scrolling MMORPG released by Game321 and Ngames.
I suppose I'm a bit strange in my tastes. I enjoy metal like Judas Priest, but I also enjoy Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, etc... I also like Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Arlo & Woodie Guthrie, B. B. King, Buddy Guy, etc... If it's not obvious, I'm not too fond of modern stuff, hehe. I will agree though there is some modern music around that's not too bad. Then again, I suppose "bad" or "good" really is subjective.
