i'm gonna make the zelda connection even more blatant and give you an instrument.
OoT style. I loved playing the ocarina in that game.
To put someone to sleep, you have to learn their lullaby. This would be a variation on that characters theme. but how many notes? and which notes on which buttons? or should i have another control scheme?
what about a trombone-style horn? controlled with the mouse and the spacebar. too bad for mouse acceleration, that would probably feel really weird. may be worth looking into.
Maybe Z-M on the bottom row of the keyboard play through one scale. Maybe you get new 'keys' (which change the scale being played) Maybe some songs have different effects when played in minor scales rather than major.
Maybe combine the ideas. Maybe if the area of the screen it happens in is pretty small. The mouse is constrained into that area. So mouse acceleration doesn't screw things up too much. At points in the game, you acquire different slides, which play in different keys.
Maybe at the end of each dungeon you find a slide. They are all needed for sections of the song which vanquishes TOTALLY NOT GANON. This song would be an epic overture of all of the important music from the game. You would not have to play it. It could play over the ending sequence. Yea. Maybe.
Im not so thrilled about the low range of a trombone though. perhaps some sort of slide guitar? but then id just get upset that you couldn't actually do any sliding. which... is true of a trombone as well. Damn.
Really you won't be able to slide, play more that one note at once, OR hold notes out.. which means.
drums? melodic drums? hm. no.
oh. it could be drums. magic fills in the melody! but then the OHR's poor handling of rhythm will seem really wrong. however...
every song starts with a drum fill. This is how you tell the game what song you want to play.
after the fill, you play a rhythm. This is how you tell the game what mood you want that song to be in.
that would be cool!
But all of this is too complicated, probably. I'll probably give NOT LINK a 'spirit piano' or something. but it has no black keys. 7 notes. or...
maybe you find new keys. you have one whole octave. C to B. black keys included. Like
Code:
S D G H J
Z X C V B N M
S D G H J
Z X C V B N M
but at the start of the game, it looks like:
Code:
% % % % %
Z % C % B N %
% % % % %
Z % C % B N %
...
...
...
This is all too complicated.
