Do you think the gaming market is over saturated?

For some reason I feel like I'm in 1983 when Atari and other game developers back then were pushing this, that, and the other thing down gamer's throat.

I cannot for the life me find time outside work to do anything but try and finish or play the latest game that's come out. This is a much different scenario than I felt a few years back. A few years back in the dawn of the next-gen consoles, there was almost nothing I wanted to play. The last gen only had a handful of games I really wanted to play, and that was it. Yes, I know the PS2 had tons of great games and RPGs. However, I very much prefer traditional RPGs from the SNES and PSone era. There are actually very little RPGs I really enjoy on the next-gen consoles.

With the PS Vita being released in the US soon with a good selection of release games, and the 3DS finally coming up to speed, with a few other retro games I want to play... I find myself with little time to do much. Heck, my tablet is filled to the brim with news apps that I just can't get my eyes off(it ruins my sleep). On top of that, there are many worthwhile games and apps on my tablet which can be anybody occupied for eternity. If anyone ever asked me what I would take with me if I were to be locked in a room for the rest of my life, I'd say a tablet. It's almost endless entertainment, and I fail to not get distracted by it.

Console-wise, I currently only own a Wii, 3DS, and a tablet. I have a computer, but it's used for coding(if I find time), not gaming. You wouldn't think I would have too much to do, as the Wii doesn't have many games(I enjoy select VC games, haven't beat Majora's Mask). My 3DS is almost at 100 games purchased in the eShop(yes the eShop isn't all that bad anymore and has some great titles now). And to make the matters worse, Google recently released many awesome titles on the Market for a mere $0.10! And of course, I made a large amount of 10c purchases during those sales.

Does anybody else find that they don't really have much free-time(in terms of just sitting there to relax and do absolutely nothing)? Do you think that the gaming market is starting to over-saturate? Do you think we need less or more titles to play? Do you suspect that with the current economic times, that this over-saturation will harm the overall gaming community, as consumers cannot afford to purchase every game they want that's being released?

At the moment, I have a few games which I want, some of which aren't released yet:

* Mario Kart 7
* Sonic Generations (3DS version)
* Sonic Collection (DS version)
* Kid Icarus: Up Rising
* Xenoblade Chronicles
* Skyrim

Lately I've been getting back into Nintendo titles, before I had a major console and played many other next-gen games. I haven't bought the above released games, as I want to beat the games I already have in progress... And there's a good handful I have.

With all of this, I'm also juggling a consulting business, a full-time job, and am trying to jumpstart a web development business. Zombie

I feel like we're coming from an era where you could play every major quality game released, so our expectations are that we should be able to play "all" of the good games. At this point, though, video games are such a lucrative industry that there's tons of really good mainstream stuff coming out. There's literally no way to play all of it and still lead a normal life. That's not even taking into account the amazing indie games coming out every 5 minutes or so.

I think this is good and bad. It's good because it means that games are becoming a more accepted form of media, like movies and TV. Nobody tries to watch every single movie that comes out.

It's bad because it also means that what used to be a small-ish community of like minded folks has become something a lot more mainstream. I suppose this isn't really bad, but it's bittersweet. It really means that, like music and movies and every other mainstream art, smaller communities will form around more niche portions of the gaming scene.

I think there is the possibility of oversaturating the market, and we can see that in the huge amount of shovelware coming out for a few consoles (coughNintendocough) but I don't think it's that big of an issue. Games are going to be here for a while in many forms.

My personal solution is to greatly limit the amount of games that I play by raising my standards, or at least changing them. Right now, I'm essentially only playing horror themed games from the OHR, so that's a nice focused way of going about it. At least that way I don't feel like I'm missing out on tons of stuff. I've also pretty much stopped playing mainstream games, somewhat out of boredom and somewhat because they're so damned expensive.

Even if I didn't have to go to work, even if I didn't have to sleep at night. Even if I didn't have to stop and eat or shower occasionally, I could never hope to play to completion even a tenth of the games I see coming out.
