Maximum amount of money a player can have?

What is the current limit on Money the player can start with and how much money they can carry on their character in the game?

I ask this, as I have an interesting idea for a game. Basically an RPG game where the goal is to become a billionaire. The game will follow a normal RPG model, but rather than saving the world from some evil dude or saving a princess, the goal is to rule the world and become a billionaire.

The player would start off with very little money and needs to find a way to gain enough money to start a business empire. Don't think this would involve killing a few rats in a sewer though. It will have traditional RPG elements and battles however, but not traditional rats and slime monsters. The battles will win you over money depending on the character your beating up, it will have the regular stats, it's just the role the protagonist plays is not the usual hero role. So it's a role playing game, as your playing the role of becoming a billionaire.

If anything the game hasn't really started development yet, I'm just at the idea stage, and thinking what kind of story and what age it should be set in. I'm in part for a fantasy type one, but also for a modern one to make the player feel that he/she is the one becoming the billionaire. Who wouldn't want to play the role of a billionaire?

This is why I need to see if the money limit can support such a large number, or if I need to say make in-game bank firms to store excessive amounts of money.

What do people think of the idea overall, and if the game had a good story and gameplay, would you consider playing it? Or do you prefer a traditional RPG game with some sort of bad guy wanting to rule the world or something? What kind of story would you like in such a game that would make the game interesting to play?

I'm trying to get ideas, if I do plan on making this type of game, I want it to at least be appealing to people. I don't want to create another Fortune Street game which had too many mixed reviews...

I guess Grand Theft Auto sort of has similar gameplay where the protagonist is trying to get rich and rule the city. But this game will hopefully be more legit with less blood and theft. Although I can make it an option, if it appeals to anyone.

The enemies in the game will be your competitors in business, battles will ultimately decide who gets a client, so dying in battle will mean that you don't lose the game, just that one lead which could have made you more money in the long run. I'm thinking if I made it modern, to centralize it around the video game industry.

Battles will be strategic in the sense of your abilities and what you can do to the competitor to weaken them, and essentially make them look bad, and make your company look more ideal for the client. These will be in the form of various attack abilities which the player gains. Rather than HP, it's your companies reputation on the line, thus the not dying component. Hiring specific people onto your team can help fight the odds in such a battle. Having a mix of lawyers, marketers, and public speakers can really change the outcome of a corporate battle for a client contract.

Basically the player ultimately dies if they go bankrupt, and in the beginning of the game when you first start, spending wisely will be the key for survival until you finally establish your brand in the market. But imagine what you can do in the game once you have tons of money? Will you be the next EA Games or Square?

These are just initial ideas which may change if I choose to develop such a title. What does everyone else think of this crazy idea? Will it work, or will it flop?

I'd play it without RPG elements. I mean, there's a reason Sims does so well.

May starting money is 32767, and according to http://hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/What_are_the_limits_on_various_things_.html#Money the max you can have in game is 2000000000, but I just checked the code for the get money command, and it looks like that limit is not actually enforced, so i think the real maximum is 2147483647

I remember playing a SNES RPG game called Uncharted Waters 2. It was divided into six different quests. Most of them were pirate themed, but one was a trader, and his goal was to earn a huge amount of money. You could gain money by fighting battles or searching for treasures, but the main way was to find valuable trade routes. The world was full of different towns that sold different items at different values. You could find situations where one city would pay you more for an item than you bought it for in another city. Not only did you have to figure out which routes and items were most profitable, you had to watch out for pirates trying to steal your valuable cargo in-transit.
