So, Halloween is coming up and...wait, no hold on. I think I missed a couple months...
Crap.
Anyway, regardless of my ridiculous timing, I've been on a "scary game" kick for the past coupla weeks (Silent Hill and the like), and I was wondering if anybody had suggestions on good, genuinely scary OHR games.
At some point, I played a halloween themed game that was about getting sucked into the OHRRPGCE...I can't remember what it was called though! It was pretty rad and kinda creepy. Not a lot of jump-out-of-the-closet type scares, so that was nice. Interestingly, I was playing it on a weird computer and the colors kept inverting for some reason, which actually made it even scarier.
I'm also doing some research of my own into what makes a game "scary" so this is sort of a research project too. Yay!
You're thinking of Sleepover by Charbile, one of my favourite games. Not scary, but spooky?
On the note, Jimmy's Adventure by SDHawk & Sew (IIRC) was eerie and possibly scary given the secret content (plus it ruined Charbile's life)
The front and centre "scary OHR game" is surely Missing by Orchard-L.
Or if you don't believe that, then you'll say that Bloodlust by OnlyOneInAll is; this is maybe the only proper OHR horror game.
Wait, no, there's Tilt. Play that one.
I think Vampire's Curse by Fenrir was a Halloween game? It's not scary but it has vampires; I'm just looking for an excuse to once again promote it.
Also Project `C' and Pitch Black 1/2 should probably be mentioned, but I haven't played far enough to know.

I still remember when I first played Surlaw: Armageddon. Compared to the previous games in the same series, this one gave me chills during the first few scenes. The music is also something, if I recall correctly. Oh and then there's Grimace, nothings more scarier than him. imho.

I'm playing through Missing right now, it's pretty cool except that for some reason it keeps crashing. I guess it's a testament to the quality of the the game that I keep playing it anyway. I'm intrigued by the mystery, and I can't tell where it's headed at all. Reminds me of Twin Peaks with a bit of Lovecraft, although it's not as surreal as the former or as dreadful as the latter. We'll see how it turns out.
I've got a nice list of games to go through now. Hoorah! Looks like I won't be doing anything useful for the next few weeks.

Oh! You might be seeing bug 470
I would really love to resolve that bug, as it can be tricky to reproduce.
Are you playing using the exe file that comes with missing? If so, could you try playing it with the latest stable version of the OHR instead, and let me know if the crashes still happen?

I've tried both the exe that comes with it and the latest stable version. In the exe that comes with it, the crashes are infrequent and don't seem to be around any specific events.
With the new version, I got a crash twice when a certain event occurred (near the beginning, where the player gets spooked by someone walking down the hallway). That's when I switched to the exe that came with it.

Aha! That is good information! That makes me think the original crash is fixed, and that the crash you saw in the zenzizenzic stable is a different bug.
Could you also try the latest nightly build? (especially at that hallway event that crashed the latest stable version)
I am also curious if the hallway crash left any interesting messages in your g_debug.txt file
I tried the nightly build and it crashed around the same time as the latest stable. I'll PM you the contents of the g_debug.txt file, though it doesn't look too useful. I also tried loading a save game that was PAST the hallway issue, and it also crashed a ton, although in no consistent manner.
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to finish this game; the crashes are getting too frequent. Boo. Maybe I'll try using an old version from the same year, see if that helps.
EDIT: Using an old version seems like it's working so far. Yay.

Can you tell me exactly, in as much detail as possible, how you reproduce the crash?
I'll give it a shot in a day or two, when I get a chance. I need to make sure I'm actually using the nightly, I think I may have been using the stable release. I'll send you a PM with the details. I am running Windows XP on a somewhat crappy netbook, so maybe that has something to do with it?
I finished Missing, though! I used the Hasta la QB release, and that seemed to work except some sounds were missing. Excellent game, wrote a little article about it too that I'll submit to HamsterSpeak for next month, yay. Gonna start on Bloodlust soon.

Thanks! i appreciate it! :)

Probably not your netbook's fault, not unless it has been crashing on lots of other programs besides the OHR
