Looks good, man. Big fan of the Gameboy look.

And yeah. I've always started my games with the step on NPC thing too. But I'm old so your "retro" is my "new fangled."

Am I the only person who sees this contest as an excuse to get James to design more core features into the engine over the course of the next few months?

Brilliant strategy, 8-bit, but I'm on to your plan. ;) Consequently, I agree with it.

I make no promise to enter, though. Trying to stick to my write-and-finish-one-novel-a-year plan, and I'm running out of time on that. If I start a new game, again, I may as well give up on all of my self-imposed deadlines.

But...sometimes I wonder how good I can make a game without relying on scripts.

I sure hope so. Hopefully it'll release faster than Alectormancy. I'm still waiting. I like nightlies and all, but I can't make a serious game with them.

Anyways, CardCastors: Origins is coming along nicely.
It has a Card Dex! Currently, there are 37 Elemental Spell Cards. Can you collect them all? Thats not even including Summoning Cards...

Any reason you spelled it "Castors"? If you're trying to riff Cardcaptor, then stick with Captor or Caster.

Just my two cents.

You know about Cardcaptor?! Wow.

Anyways, I changed it to Spellcards: Origins, because my friend said theres already some things with CardCastors. However, she also advised me to change it from Spellcards as well.

Sorry, but this is all I can think of when I see the word "castor" written down.

Reminds me strongly of Seiklus!

I've been meaning to finish implementing zone triggers for a couple months, which would be great for this contest since they'll allow a lot of sophisticated fake-plotscripting effects. The contest organiser might even regret me implementing them :P. However sadly I don't have much time for OHR work for the next month, so it might be quite late.

I might even whip up a quick entry in the last week. If so, it'll probably be a block pushing game, because I love block pushing puzzles!

I just finished off Traho Forest, and added 14 original sound effects to my game. There are 15. The 15th one is only the swishing noise, though. Grin

Now, I need to find a program for 8-Bit music...

ah, I see what you're doing there. I've had similar plans in the past. Though doing it without scripting seems nuts. Good luck.
