When he gets a legit number of people to enter, I think. So far it looks like you, K, me, charbile. Oh and in case you were wondering, NOT shadows ;D but yea, I look forward to the contest although I'm not really all that creative. I already have a plan for at least three crazy unique NPC push puzzles, though. Hope that's ok Smile But really, I already got my layout sort of, just gotta actually make myself start up some graphics... so bad at drawing, let alone 20x20 pixel art, but oh well! Hope you guys enjoy the game, and I hope to enjoy yours Smile Good Luck everyone!!

Well either way, I think I've pretty much decided I'll be entering. Out of curiosity, how intense is the no ripping rule? Are we allowed to rip our own previous stuff? I personally don't care either way- just would like to know before I start this up!

Just rip music that's so obscure that you probably won't be caught. Kudos if you still credit the music, but with an incredibly hard to find in-game Easter egg.

This isn't a dating site. You don't need to know all about me. Just make a good, creative game that follows the rules and you will do just fine.

Yes, but it helps to know the judge before entering their contest or accepting their commission. What makes a game good to you? By creative, I'm inferring you mean games that do not use the built-in rpg mechanics? Would a rpg be fine?

Just make the game you want to make. If the judge happens to like it then you get $50 (maybe). If not, you made a game and that's always rewarding. Even if the judge was willing to vocalize everything he likes in a game, chances are he wouldn't really know where to start. Or at least that's my opinion on it.

Anyone who is joining this contest just to earn some cash should know that there are easier and more reliable ways to make $50.

First off.
Master K: Romeo and Juliet. And the drama is over Smile

Willy: I meant am I allowed to use music that I created, but used in my old game, but I think I'm gonna try to make more music anyways.

Willy again: any prize is a good inspiration, especially for someone like me who never finds time to make a game, but the real inspiration here is the rules Smile

c'mon, people! just use some ingenuity here. remember the "fight battle" contest? those games were mildly entertaining. well, some of them anyway. that contest was even more restricted than this one. were i not already involved with several projects (or just two, rather) i'd enter. i'm actually pretty curious to see where this leads. i'm also curious about what types of games people will make, other than the standard JRPG that the OHR was intended for.
Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy... So here's some lunchmeat... Sandwich, maybe?

Ugh, just what SS needs. More Drama. I know a way to solve this!

It wouldn't be an OHR contest thread if no one was acting like an ass and then playing innocent.

(Hint: Don't expect to be treated nicely in a contest thread if you start off by calling the contest terrible)

I'm making a text adventure game for this. Apparently this will be exactly the same as making a turn based RPG because the text boxes are rectangular and the font's a certain size.

Problem is this doesn't feel like a contest at all. So far I've learned:

8-bit is the only judge...
He wants a RPG with puzzles but not including:
Mazes
Push NPC's.

But with NO plotscripting?..
So exactly what kind of puzzle am I supposed to be formulating for him?...
It'd be easy for me if I could just make a excellent game with no plot scripting, None of my games have relied of plotscripting! But I'd have absolutely no clue if I'm "doing it right" rather than just worrying about putting forth my best effort.

A thought about the music thing: I think that "No ripped music" ought to just mean "No music that you don't have a legal right to use"

So (if I understand correctly) all of the following would be perfectly okay:

* Stock music that comes with they engine
* Music you wrote yourself for an old released game
* Any creative-commons licensed music you found on http://dig.ccmixter.org/ or any of the many other sources of creative-commons music

I am *thinking* about entering this contest. My contest entries are always so plotscripted, it would be cool to force myself to work within the standard battle system for a change.

I am just wary that I won't have the energy to follow through. So busy lately :P

He's not saying he'll disqualify games with those elements, he just doesn't want every game to be nothing but navigating a maze and pushing boxes. If you made a really great game with maze like dungeons I'm sure that would be cool.

Edit: No one anywhere would ever count graphics or music you personally made as "ripped."

Yeah perhaps I'm just getting swept in the negativity.. or that it seems to me every contest this year has had some sort of weird qualifier for it that has made me unable to enter with confidence.

James and Surlaw are right. About everything. A text adventure is a PERFECT example of what I am looking for here. So is the Pheonix Wright idea. Also, I'm making a King's Quest type game. NONE of those are your standard OHR fare. If the most creative thing you can come up with is a RPG with push puzzles, you are kind of missing the point of the contest.

So what if I am the only judge? Maybe I don't want someone making an 8bit Should Die game, have their friends (or fake accounts) vote for it and then be forced to cough up $50 because of it. Sorry if I'm a little jaded. Anyways, its my money so you'll just have to live with my rules. If you don't want to call it a contest, fine. Call it whatever the hell makes you happy.

EVERY contest has rules and qualifiers. Why is this so controversial?

Konami, you make great games and I've always known you to be a creative person. Have some confidence and don't get caught up in nit picking, and I'm sure you will make something great.

I want to pitch in my $0.02 and say that this is a fantastic idea. I hope to enter (but I promise nothing).

Constraints are the heart of any contest and screw anyone who thinks otherwise. Being creative within those constraints is what wins contests. Remember who won the Fight Battle contest? It wasn't the most cleverly-designed battle system.

OK thanks. Sorry if I came off overly negative towards this thing, It's a good idea and all.

Can you specifically confirm or deny what James is saying about non-copyrighted music?.

Yup. Public Domain is fine. I'm doing this for YOU, Konami. And not just because I feel bad about not getting back to you on LJ. (I'm sorry.) But I'm holding firm on the no ripped graphics rule.

So how about $50 to the winner, and art/music for the runners up? There are enough people for me to split the dough, but a big first prize would be cool. And how about I do a full soundtrack for second place (up to 12 tracks) and a black and white inked drawing for third? Sound good? I'm still flexable on this.

I'm in. My game'll probably be a bit on the disturbing side, tho. With a story about a man who suffers from an extreme case of paranoid-schizophrenia.

I'll probably make the music myself with my crap-guitar. Probably a few riffs and I'm done.
