After three months of development and almost a month of testing/debugging, I'm happy to release the 25% demo of Ruin.

There shouldn't be any issues, but please let me know if you run into any problems. Any and all feedback is much appreciated.

The game can be found here:

Tried it for a bit. That title screen is awesome! It's those touches that make it stand out from other ohr games. Felt the intro was dragging at certain parts, ie looking at the water. Looks a lot better so far.

I really love the changes so far, that said I'm gonna get my really minor nit-picks out of the way.

1) There is an instance of "i've" in 1 textbox (that is a really minor thing though :P)

2) On the Ledger, under the player abilities Fred's entry still reads ???? even though he declares his name right away this time around.

3) This bit is down to personal preferance, and something that was apparent in The Omega. On the menu it still totally cancels out of the menu everytime you select anything in the ledger, if you are using Zenzizezic then I think there is a general bitset or a menu bitset that allows you to go back to the previous menu when you hit cancel/open a textbox (either that or I'm going barmy).

That being said everything else I can say is in praise of the game. Everything looks so much better!
I love the Uja map (and Fred's lung capacity :P), it's a great addition to the game and I love what you did with the forest map too, it feels more like an actual forest rather than a dungeon with forest wallpaper.

The battles have been rebalanced if I'm correct, I really like what you've done there but I feel that some enemy sprites could do with an update too (the birds to be exact) as they look out of place with all the other graphical updates you've done.

All in all it's improved on The Omega in every aspect, I'm really looking forward to future updates. Smile

I feel the wallowing impulse sometimes when I see a really beautiful game. What makes me feel better is to look at my oldest graphics and compare them to my newest graphics, and suddenly I feel better again :)

I am excited about Ruin. I haven't played the demo yet-- but I am excited :)

My oldest compared to my newest?
Makes me feel better. I've come a long ways since, and I still have a long ways to go. My oldest graphics were total crap. I remember back to the days where I had no clue how to work the battle system...

Anyways, enough reminiscing. Lets save that for another thread...

For some reason I'm having a really hard time finding this text. I've searched through all the textboxes and can't seem to find it. Do you happen to remember roughly where you were or what you were doing when you saw it?

Thank you for catching this! The decision to put his name in from the beginning was one of the very last things I changed. I apparently forgot to update the ledger to reflect the change though.

This bugs me too and it will be something that I look into for sure. I know of a way off the top of my head to make it work with scripts, but is there actually a way to do it with just a bitset?

I appreciate you taking the time to check it out. There's a couple of things I'd like to ask you (and anybody who finishes it):

1. What did you think about the random battles? Were they generally too easy or too hard? Were they just about right?

2. What about the bosses? Did it take you more than one try to beat them? Did any of them seem to hard/too easy?

3. Did you find Derf's Secret Stash? It's pretty easy to get, but some people could overlook the entire thing considering how one finds the clue in the first place.

Also, I'm glad you liked Uje. I was pretty happy with how it turned out though I may end up tweaking the boss fight there a bit more.

Definitely don't be ashamed of your work. I appreciate the kind words about my graphics though as I have worked extremely hard to make improvements over time.

You should see some of the screenshots from the first demo of The Omega (which is the grandfather game of Ruin). I'm still not where I'd like to be but I think I have made a steady improvement over the years. Some of the first demo screens can be found here:

http://superwalrusland.com/ohr/issue7/omega/omega.html

Then the full version released later here:

http://superwalrusland.com/ohr/issue17/omega/omega.html

Now I have this game, and I am pretty proud of my improvements. I suggest you keep on working on your stuff as you will only get better with experience. I've been using this engine off and on for over ten years and I'm still not where I want to be, but I'm working my way to that point a little every day.
