Flying I do think is a meaningful type, in that it can mean "has power to fly/is in midair".

Also doubles as the Pokémon world's version of a wind-elemental type, especially now that attacks can be either physical or special regardless of what type they are (so physical flying attacks are more related to the flight/birds aspect, while special flying attacks are more along the lines of gusts of wind and tornados rather than wings and beaks and dive-bombing and so on.)

I think Bug pretty much needs to be a type, too. Bugs are actually "different enough" from other types of critters to qualify as their own type, I would think... they're just really weird, and Pokémon just wouldn't feel right if all the Bug-types (and their attacks) just became Normal or something instead. Though I guess dropping Bug could work if all or most of the Pokémon are original creatures are there are very few (or no) bug-based critters around.

Really the only types that don't make sense as types are Dragon and Dark, which should come as no surprise considering that Dragon was a last-minute addition (seriously, only one Dragon-type move in the first generation, when even Ghost--with the same number of Pokémon--at least had three? listed at the very end in both the game's code and the official type chart? not used by any 1st-gen Pokémon until the very end of the Pokédex? can't be anything else) and Dark was made up solely to counterbalance Psychic's overpoweredness in the first generation (the only logical reason I've found so far for Dark being completely immune to Psychic attacks, no matter how hard some people try to come up with an "in-universe" explanation... I would think critters trying to use "sneaky" tactics--which is what the Dark type is defined by, using sneaky or dishonorable attacks--would be more vulnerable to mental attacks than brute-force types, since their thoughts being disrupted would make them unable to pull anything off very well. And not being thought through too well beforehand would explain why the almost-entirely-physical Dark attacks were counted as special attacks until D/P...)

@Nathan: Interesting style. It has been now decided, the graphic/pokemon game type shall be semi-classic. As in, the map graphics and music will have to reflect this. Not bad, Nathan. Now, we can start brainstorming pokemon. Also, if you do wish, you could give the Pokemon stats.

@Fnnrf: Dark and Dragon not being true types? Well, it is perfectly understandable for Dragon types. It is a strange element; Their attacks are only SE on themselves. They are weak to their own type, and Ice attacks. They really don't serve a purpose, except for being wickedly powerful, with a massive crutch, when exploited.
But, I choose to follow the elemental listings as in the original games.

@Marion: I really don't know what you could do...

Maybe i could do some easy things?

Like drawing items (pokeball, potion, maybe trees or furniture) or writing not-so-important dialouges (townspeople, other Trainer)? Or making/inventing maps?

And i just wanted to aks will there be day/night time relevant events in the game?

That could work. You could write some up some dialouge for aethestic NPC's.
I'm going to start designing a overworld pokeball and sign.

So creators, start...creating! Nathan, we can start brainstorming some Pokemon for you to make. People reading, if you got talent, and interest join now! Like, now. We don't bite...hard.

Will the Player get the first pokemon form a professor?
Could the professor be a woman? (just because i think the professors are always man ... until now)
What will the Name of the first City be?
How many houses will be there? 3-5?

Oh, it's just an idea maybe the Player charakter could have a little brother/sister? He could have to save him/her later in the game, and get his first pokemon because he has to find his sibling who went missing in the forest, or something like that.
Sorry, i think i just started to get creative, and i wanted to tell the ideas. xD

Here's one. I'm repurposing one of the monster sprites from Noodnik.

It's a slime. I figure they'd have high defense and low HP. Attacks like Split-Splat, Prick and Backpoke seem appropriate as well. Poison elemental.

We just outfit these puppies with faces, colors, and accessories as appropriate, and we've got ourselves SlimeSalad.com references. Looking to the left of this box, I can see a baker's dozen variants I could do. Want me to get on those?

It's kinda traditional for these sorts of games to try to make at least one of their monsters look like cute girls. I can put more colors on this if you want, like a bit of orange or brown. Or color it something different, like pink or green.

I'd expect Bite, Scratch, and Pounce from a creature that looked like this.
Maybe we should make an immature version for this one to grow from?

I'll be back in a couple of hours. In the meantime, does anyone else have any monsters to brainstorm?

@Nathan: Nice looking sprites. I think there should be a pre-evo of the leopard lady. The pre-evo should evolve at level 20. Now, for my Pokemon brainstorming ideas...

* A adorable moogle looking Pokemon. It could have an evolution into a larger sized pokemon similar to it. Normal Type.

* A tree stump pokemon. It should evolve into a full tree at level 30. Grass Type.

* A small duckling. It would be weak, and perhaps unsightly, like the ugly duckling. Then, at level 15, it would evolve into a better looking bird, and then at level 35, it would evolve into a magnificent swan. The Pre-Vo would be Water/Normal, the second would be Water/Normal, and the third would be Water/Flying.

I have four gym leaders drawn up on paper as concept art for you to follow, Nathan.
Also, I think the Leopard Lady should be named...Leparis. Le Paris! Haha...Paris. Maybe something along those lines.

@Marion:
1. Yes.
2. ...Maybe.
3. I don't know yet.
4. In the first city? Four. Yours, Rivals, Proffesor's Lab, and Proffesor's house.

Then I was little, I drew hundreds of monsters and kept them in a file.
They looked somewhat like the ones in my picture.
I can't draw good sprite, but i could just draw some monsters-pictures?

If you want, you can take a monster-sprites/enemy-sprites from my Kim-und-Jose Game, if you mention that it's taken from that game. ;)

I've also started to write not-so-important-dialoges, and it's fun. Grin

How may Citys will be in the game?
More than 8?

Haha! My scanner is now working! Here are my four gym leaders...

Ta~da!
The top left girl is Amber, the Normal Type leader, the top middle is Valentine, the Dark Type leader, the top right is Haley, the Ghost Type leader, and the boy on the bottom is Brandon, the Fire Type leader.

This is concept art.
What do you think...?

Here's the cheetah girl. I'll get to work on the stump, tree, ducks, and gym leaders later. Not today.

@Nathan: Awesome. But, I have some importing problems.
Apparently, it will only let me import your files in the form of 16-Bit bmp. The pictures are 24-Bit bmp...
It's not a big issue, but still...

And i'm guessing you'll finish off the incompleted sprites later, as well...? The main hero sprites, the Pika sprites, and the Leopard sprites are unfinished, so it seems.

But, nice work on the sprites!

I don't know how to change the PNGs into 16-color BMPs, or I'd do sprites outside of the editor more often. Anyone know programs that can do that?

For the trainers, I was figuring Attack pose being used also for the second frame and the Cast/Use frame. For any I haven't already drawn differently, I was figuring Attack 1 being reused as Cast, Step being reused as Hurt, and Stand being reused as Weak.

A little Pokeball icon could act as the Dead graphic for all of the Pokemon -- the slime and cheetah are only different because I'm letting you use some graphics I was making for a different game.
