Who here likes Pokemon...?

If your answer was yes, than I need you!
If your answer was no, I still need you!

I always had a plan to make a Pokemon game with OHRRPGCE.
Our fellow forumer, Fnnrf, already made an excellent parody game, Puckamon. But this game shall be a somewhat more serious.

Now, i'm calling out to you. I am going to need help to make a complete game like this. I imagine the end results to be great, but it will never happen if I don't get help. I tend to quit on a project, because i'm usually incapable of doing what I want, and I get frustrated. But, I thought getting help would change that, and potentially create a decent game.
Heres the possible positions that are needed:

*Hero Spriter: Potentially one of the most important positions, as they create Pokemon hero sprites.

*Enemy Spriter: In charge of creating trainer sprites, and pokemon sprites. Could overlap with hero spriter.

*Mapper: Another important position. Tasked with creating and laying out maptiles to my specifications.

*Battle Background Artist: They would be tasked with making battle backgrounds, and possibly the title screen to my specifications.

*Composer: A competent composer is needed. I might own a program, but i'm terrible at the moment. They would craft an original soundtrack.

*Scripter: Not needed for plotscripting, but for funcionality scripting. It would be nice if Pokemon could level up with actual levels, if it could be possible.

I know, it is a large looking project. But I think if enough people got together, we could make a really awesome game! I know the Collaberation Project is currently going on, but it is currently idled, as it seems, and this could be an interesting project.
My position would be to oversee the project, and write the plot. Even though i'm just now entering Grade Nine, I still would love to see this turn into something.

It has been now decided, the graphic/pokemon game type shall be semi-classic. As in, the map graphics and music will have to reflect this.

Alright, so whos up for the task?

I won't be able to help but I wish you the best of luck with it.

I know this is probably common sense, but you might just want to lower your expectations a bit. Setting realistic goals around your skill level and working on as much as your can by yourself is really the only way you will can improve your personal technique. That is what hobby game making is about, right?

It's easy to get discouraged when you have so many ideas you want to use, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with aspiring to reach all of them. But coming from my own personal experience, I never completed things using this engine 10 years ago because I never set realistic goals.

Either way, I wish you luck with your new project.

I know I should set realistic goals. But, the only games I could finish are only short games. I have never finished a long term project. I have tons of ideas floating around in my head, and I will stifle my current project just to work on the idea. If it dies, I move back to my old one, if it survives, it usually gets caught in the cycle again.

And thanks for the luck. By god, i'm gonna need it.

Finishing short games is something to be proud of. I have gotten way more of a sense of satisfaction from all the short games I have finished than any of the longer games that I have not yet finished.

I really like you're Idea about making a pokemon game. Grin

What pokemon will be in there? The first 150 or even more?
What will the plot be?
As usual: You travell from one gym to the next collecting badges?
Meeting a mystical pokemon on that why while saving the world , or will it be something different this time?
Sorry,but i'm really courious.

I think, the plot is important so everyone involed knows what to work on.
Organising such a giant project is the most important thing, in my opinion.
You should think about that first.
Also you should consider that people how joind the project, could stop taking part just in the middle of it, and such unhappy things.

I would like to help you, but I don't know about scripiting and making music, - but I whis i did Smile - and making little pixel-sprites is the almost most difficult thing about making a game. Sad

I could give you some tilesets I made for my games (one was in hamster speak, the other is just a forest), maybe they look a little like pokemon.

I don't want Nitendo to be runnig to us, complaining about stealing pokemon... Surprised
May be a stupid question, but is it legal to make fan-games and to use such copyrighted names like pokemon?

1. Original Pokemon, but with some well known ones returning. Not original like Red, but Original like all new Pokemon.
2. Not yet planned.
3. But of course there shall be gyms! I already know two gym leaders in my head.

In case it isn't legal...
Maybe we could invent our own monsters, items and so on?
And just take the bacis idea (Training, fighting and cathing monsters while travelling from gym to gym) ?
I think this would still be a lot of fun! Grin

There are already thousands out there that Nintendo doesn't care about.

Pokemon Ameythst and Garnet, anyone?

Glad you asked.

1. One gym leader will be a gothy girl named Valentine, based directly on a girl that is in a short story i'm writing. She will be...yikes, how do I put it. Black and red colors, dark personality, large red bow...think of a Punk Doll. Her type is Dark.

2. This guy's gonna be the final gym leader. He is initially based off of me. His names Brandon. He shall wear a Black Hoodie, Blue Jeans, black hair, freckles...his type is Fire.

3. The first gym leader shall be a girl named Amber. She is shorter than the rest, has glasses, and is the Normal Type gym leader.

The rest are now confidential...

I can draw sprites for your mons. I like the challenge of drawing other peoples' ideas for things.

My suggested way of doing enemy sprites would just be to take a pose from the hero sprites and paste it into Small or Medium enemy graphics, as appropriate. (My current experience with a project where I'm doing this tells me that most of these look most threatening with Attack 1 or Cast graphics for their poses.)

@Nathan: You can? Well, as a test of your skills, I would like to put in a request. Could you create a male/female trainer hero sprite, and a pikachu sprite. You can use any color you want; your not restricted. If you create it well enough, i'll take you aboard. If not...well...

Love the ideas here. Would the battle system be changed to be more like pokemon (1v1) as well? Also, ever think about losing the "pokemon" title completely? Sounds like you plan to have mostly original content anyway so it might be worth it to just come up for a new name for these creatures you will create.

Either way, I'm interested in helping out. I could probably lend a hand making graphics of any sort and possibly some music. Just shout it out.

@Spoon: I didn't even want to look at that link when I seen the last part. Naughty, naughty boy! ...you are a boy, right...?

@Jaguar: Thanks for offering your services!

So far, we got Nathan and Jaguar volunteering...nobody else...? Tragic.
Well, I got plans for gym leaders.

1. Amber, Normal Type
2. ???, Energy Type
3. ???, Grass Type
4. Valentine, Dark Type
5. ???, Water Type
6. ???, Ground Type
7. Haley, Ghost Type
8. Brandon, Fire Type

The Elite Four...
1. ???, Rock Type
2. ???, Flying Type
3. ???, Fighting Type
4. ???, Psychic Type
Champion: ???, Dragon Type

As you can see, the list is vastly incomplete. Some developers could get their own NPC into one of these slots. I know I put me and my two friends as Gym Leaders.

I would prefer to make things like Bug and Dragon a style of drawing and giving stats to the creatures, rather than a weakness/resistance/attack types. Flying I do think is a meaningful type, in that it can mean "has power to fly/is in midair". But hey, it's not my game.

Jesse/Crimson, Jane/Cobalt, and a Pikachu.
