You can use spawning to create an untargettable enemy on death, though it can be tricky getting it to show up in the same spot.

You could also give enemies more HP than normal and have their "desperation" attack be one that transmogrifies them into a "dead" version of the enemy (which can then hit itself with a self-targeted instant-death move and dissolve away with a regular death animation.) The only bad part about this is that you can't use regular desperation attacks with those enemies, since those slots are all taken by the "transmogrification, switch to dead mode" attack.
And of course, if you do so much damage to them that they never get a chance to use the "dead mode" attack they'll just dissolve as normal. Kind of like you hit them so hard they didn't even get a chance to fall down first before there was nothing left of 'em.
As for the "dead" enemies still lying around afterward... you could make them untargetable and then make it so you can win without "killing" the already-dead enemies, so they'll dissolve away on their own if there's other enemies left but if you kill everything they just lay there during your victory animation.
Or maybe make them targetable as normal, so they'll disappear on their own once they get another turn but if you want to hurry up and get out of a battle you can blast away at the dead bodies to blow them up. Which might be more appropriate for a Doom game, actually...

One of the key reasons i was asking about this was because, I may need the dead bodies on the playing field when some of the newer characters and weapons in the game come into play. for example, the Archvile. He uses fire elementals to burn the heroes, but he also has a side attack to resurrect dead monsters.
the Dark Claw feeds off the souls of the dead, and since it is a demon weapon, for use with a later hero, Charon, it needs to somehow be able to get the souls from the dead bodies, like if the dead bodies had a stealable "Soul" item. i suppose this could all be done if I had the time and put forth the effort.
