--Original Post Below-----------------------------------------------------------

I propose that we, the OHRRPGCE community hold another 48 hour game making contests

This time, I would like to run our 48 hour contest simultaneously with the Ludum Dare 48 hour contest, and to share whatever theme they announce. This allows anybody who makes a solo game to enter it into the ludumdare contest too.

=OHRRPGCE 2011 48 hour Contest Rules=
* Contest to run the weekend of August 19th-22nd 2011
* Entries are strongly encouraged to sign up for Ludum Dare too, if they qualify according to the Ludum Dare contest rules.
* If you want to participate in a team instead of solo, or ignore the Ludum Dare theme, you can still participate in the OHRRPGCE half of the contest, and in our own separate voting.

=Prizes=
* I will offer a bugfix/feature-request prize to the winner, in the same style as the FYDG contest
* If anybody else wants to volunteer any prizes, just say so.

=Voting=
If you are entering the Ludumdare competition, they have their own voting system, which you can read about here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/rules/

The OHRRPGCE 48 hour contest will be voted with a simple alternatives vote. Rank all the games in order of preference, with your favorite one at the top, and your least favorite at the bottom, for example:

Example Vote wrote:

1) Airship 2600-2011
2) Lyte Snap Blackjack
3) Even More Of The Games By Barnabus
4) Don't Eat Hamsters
5) Potato Quest
6) Arfenhovel Redux Zero

You are also allowed to insert "NONE" anywhere in your list, if you disliked the games ranked below "NONE", this prevents your vote for them from ever being counted. If you don't put "NONE" in your list, then "NONE" is assumed to be at the very bottom of your list.

First we will count all the #1 votes. If any game gets more than 50%, it gets first place. If no game gets more than 50%, then the lowest scoring game will temporarily be ignored, and the votes will be recounted. If a vote slot has an ignored game in it, then the next vote in that voter's list will be counted. This process will be repeated until the first place winner is chosen.

Although there is no second place prize, the voting process will repeat the same way with the first place winner ignored. Then the process will be repeated to find third place, with the first and second place winners ignored.

This counting method kinda takes a long time, but it should be extremely fair.

And yes, it is okay to vote for your own entry.

=Theme=

The theme was announced and the contest begins! The theme is ESCAPE

Interpret however you please :)

May I suggest we make this an ACTUAL 48 hours contest too, ie: Pretty much the rules of Ludum Dare? There's nothing worse than a "48 hours to import the graphics, music, and plotscripts you already made and then make some maps" contest. Let's do this manly men style.

I didn't realize Ludum Dare had no prizes. Even so, I'm not sure if I'll have August 19th-22nd off work, which I'd kind of need in order to compete.

I'm willing and gearing to do this though.

I like having a 48 hour contest but I don't really care for doing it with those guys. Let's just have one, we need a contest sooner rather than later. July is hot and we need the shelter of nice cool contests!

I think if I entered Ludum Dare it would be with a web game or perhaps a mobile game.

But if we're doing a manly (ie no previous resources or even better - thought processes, although that's impossible) 48 hour contest OHR game, well, I would love to get into that. I haven't been in one yet...

Yes, starting on August 19th at 7:00pm (PDT Pacific time)

Here is a tool to convert that time into your own local timezone: timeanddate.com

Three weeks to go. I'm going to attempt to implement a series of "rapid development" features in the engine between now and then to help the contestants. Keep an eye out for a thread for these! (Hopefully nightlies aren't too unstable at the moment -- better get those bugs reported early! ;)

Also, I'll throw in a prize for second place of an additional bugfix/feature request. (Say, max one weekend's work.) However in order to emphasize that you don't need to win a contest to get to get a request fulfilled (some people took the HotOHR contest prizes the wrong wat), I'm going to suggest that you request a reasonable feature/bugfix which has already requested or filed but was not acted upon.

I'm your man right here! (I can't resist chip tunes!)

(You've disappeared for a while -- welcome back. You know, we definitely need to finish Fall! (Yeah, I'm to blame...))

The most ominous of the Ludum Dare rules is that you have you make your own music from scratch. While it's been pointed out that completely silent games win the competition, it just goes against all my sensibilities to make a silent game. Music often feels more important than graphics. I've been meaning to learn to compose chip tunes for a long time, but after some playing around in a tracker, I see I'm going to need a lot of practice. So I'd prefer to skip Ludum Dare this time (especially if collaborating with Blue Train instead).

Unless we're allowed to use a different date, I can't participate this time Sad

I might be able to participate, but i'd have to submit it quickly. I'm going to be doing some traveling around that time.

So, tell me. What is the theme of this?
And, what exactly is the prize? We get to ask for a feature, and James adds it, lickedy split?

If you want to see the list of possible themes (or propose one) see http://old.ludumdare.com/wiki/ld21:themes

I am not sure if there is a random drawing for the theme, or if it gets voted on.

By the way, if anybody else is planning on submitting their OHR 48 hour game to ludumdare, you should create an account on the ludumdare site. See the "Joining the Event" section of http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/rules/ I already have mine :)

That list is really terrible. Two AYBABTU references, a Rick Roll reference, and "Teh lulz."

Also, "0 buttons" has been stricken from the list, but I'm pretty sure I could make a decent game with no buttons.
