Whenever I get lost, the first thing I do is build a tiny house with a chest inside, and stash valuables that I am afraid to lose.
As I explore, trying to get myself un-lost, I build more tiny houses, so when I finally figure out where I am in relationship to the rest of the world, then I can follow the chain of tiny houses like Hansel and Gretel's breadcrumbs back to the first chest and reclaim my valuables
(of course this strategy doesn't work for valuables that I am actually using at the moment, like my armor and my enchanted weapons)

I know there hasn't been a whole lot of activity on the Minecraft server lately, but I wanted to update you all with some developments:
1) Dreamhost told me I am no longer allowed to store world backups on http://minecraft.hamsterrepublic.com/ apparently they were getting too big :( If anybody happens to want access to backup copies of the world file, please let me know and I can arrange some other download option. (I think Wozzek was the only person who was using these?)
2) For the past month we have been suffering a strange intermittent problem. Everybody will be simultaneously logged out, and when they try to log back in, it times out with a java exception. The server still claims that people are logged in, but nobody is really logged in. Once this has happened, nobody can connect until I have restarted the server. If anybody else sees this happen, please let me know! Don't assume it will get fixed on its own, I need to be told about it so I can deal with it (and so that I can collect information to report to tech support so we can hopefully get the problem resolved permanently)
3) And finally, has anyone had any luck finding a Mesa biome yet? I read that they are equally rare as Mushroom Island biomes (although they are bigger)

I don't remember whether or not I put the coordinates for the Savannah in this thread or not, but my notes say that there's a mesa/red sand area south of it, at roughly 1510, 14000.
Don't remember what the nearest portal to that would be. I haven't played in a while 'cause it kinda feels like we've done more or less everything there is to do.

wat
Seriously, why have disgustingly rare biomes, they become forgotten and uncared about. >_>
I seriously keep forgetting they exist mostly because the only one I've ever seen was on this server, found by Master K, and at, you know, -200000 or so Z. No joke. Maybe one less 0, but that's still far too horrid. I've still yet to see a mushroom biome otherwise.

I have been talking to tech support about the problem where everybody gets disconnected and then nobody can reconnect. In order to rule out connection problems they need the output of the mtr tool running at the same time as a minecraft session that suffers the problem.
I am hoping that I can collect this information for them soon, but if anybody else happens to be playing, and is willing to run mtr, it would help me a lot, since I usually only have 15 to 20 minutes of time fee to play minecraft each day.
(Note that on Mac OS X, I found it easier to install mtr from Macports rather than that download link they provided.)

Please note although yours or your friends' connections might not be the problem we need to rule this out before moving forward.
In order to try and determine the point at which the data is being affected, you and anybody else suffering the problem will need to run a network trace to our server. Please complete the following instructions:
** Windows Users **
*******************
- Download WinMTR - http://wiki.multiplay.co.uk/images/WinMTR.zip
- Unzip the file and run the WinMTR.exe file inside it
- Set the host as your server's IP address (no port) and hit 'Start'
- Continue to play with this running the in background for at least 20 minutes
- When you have finished, stop the trace and export the results to TEXT
- Reply to this ticket and attach the results
** Linux Users **
*****************
- apt-get install mtr
- From a terminal prompt:
- mtr IP
- Continue to play with this running the in background for at least 20 minutes
- When you have finished, copy the results to a text document.
- Reply to this ticket and attach the results
** Mac users **
**************
- Download MTR from this post: http://www.statusq.org/archives/2006/06/14/1021/
- Point the tool at your server's IP address (no port)
- Continue to play with this running in the background for at least 20 minutes
- When you have finished, copy the results to a text document.
- Reply to this ticket and attach the results
Please note that it will only help if you run this during a period where you experience issues. If you do not, then the results will be meaningless and we wont be able to help.
Thank you for your patience.

Our only real rules are don't mess up other peoples builings, and don't take stuff from chests that have signs indicating who they belong to.
I am usually on for about 20 to 30 minutes in the middle of the day. I am not sure who else still logs in or how often, but maybe we will run into each other there sometime. There are a bunch of cool things to see on the server, but many of them are so spread out that they can be hard to find without a guide
Is Wallachia still in development or is there a newer place similar to that now?
I was pleasantly surprised by the wall around Wallachia. The last time I was there it wasn't even built. The scope of that city is very impressive, though the grunts of the overpopulated inbred villagers make me want to burn it down too

After finishing the wall, I decided to take a break for a while, and have been working on my paved Nether-road from Wallachia back to Creeperton. I am about half-way right now. Being in such a remote place for several months, I really have no idea what anybody else may be doing on the server right now. It is pretty rare for me to see anybody logged in during the times when I am online.

I do plan to return to Wallachia and build more houses. I would eventually like for the entire walled area to be at least as densely built as the old part of the city is now
When the 1.8 version comes out, it is going to include a big update to Villager AI. They will no longer breed without eating food, which they can farm for themselves if it is already planted. I am hoping this will also cause them to spread out over the city a bit, rather than clustering in 2 or 3 houses like they do now.

So, what's been happening?
Hello! Long time no see!
I have been on only a little each day. I have been working on a paved nether-road from Wallachia back to Creeperton. I got about half-way and stopped to take a break and build up a village.
I still have not spotted a Mesa biome, and I don't know if anybody else has either.
I am really looking forward to the next update, especially the new stone types, the new underwater content, the performance improvements, and the decorative banners
The world map is currently kinda dead in the water. Dreamhost asked me to stop uploading the backup files & map renders, so right now I could still download them and build the map locally, but I don't have any suitable place to upload them.
