Frankly, I find just about...well, I'd estimate about 98% of anyone who plays minecraft (or at least films it) are pansies when it comes to monsters. People were always just like "Omigawsh! Ghast! We all gunna diiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeee!" and so I was a little worries when first ever entering the nether. Smote the very first one I found with a sword, never got hit once...
Also, people being all pansy like about more than just ghasts, but also skellingtonz and spiders too. I'm just sitting here going "...Are you serious right now? Are really THAT afraid of these weaklings? Or are you just ACTING afraid? Either way, man up."
Seriously, even reactions to creepers is almost always over-exaggerated. They're the only ones worthy of how much freak-out people do over the common monster, but they SUPER FLIP THE EVER LOVING CORN COB ON A SUNDAY DRIVE out about them. Like as if the creepers were nuclear detonation devices instead of just walking tnt like they really are.
If you, too, are some pansy who wets themselves at the mere mention of "zombie", then here are monster slaying tips for you.
-------------
The World
-------------
Zombie - just keep wacking it, this dude is too stupid to even bother trying to dodge your blows. If surrounded, ram attack him (that's sprinting while hitting the monster), as it will knock him a fair few blocks away, and if you're near some pit, you may be able to easily knock him down into it.
Skeleton - hurry and run up to this guy close and personal-like, but do not ram attack him, as he has the advantage the further he is away from you (excluding you being on top of some tower while he's at the bottom, more on that later). At that point, just keep wacking him. He can't attack you at a real rapid rate, but you can from that distance. Though he can attack at a range, having the high ground will be the advantage for you, as you can only shoot so far up, but your arrows won't have an issue going down...into its head.
Spider - just keep wacking him, too. position your aim a bit above it's head so that when it tries to do a leap attack, you'll smack it out of the air. A great defensive tactic is to create a one block wide, two block high crevice in which to slip into when a spider comes. They can't fit in there, so you're safe to freely keep smacking him. He'll climb up the wall, however, so make a little lip or something above the crevice so it can't hide away up above and surprise attack you when you attempt to exit. (WARNING: this doesn't work for cave spiders, as they are about the size of one block)
Creeper - Many say to use arrows, I say that's a good waste of arrow. Easy way to slay the creeper at a cost efficient rate is to make yourself a sword (don't ever bother using wooden swords for anything other than meat harvest from animals, by the way. use only stone and higher ranking swords for monster hunting). After your sword has been crafted, and you've found yourself a creeper, do ram attacks into it. If you can pull it off, sometimes you can even hit a creeper twice this way, if you keep swinging. Might I also add, when you successfully ram the creeper that you should retreat a tad bit so as to be prepared to ram him again. This tactic works beautifully, but when you've got a creeper suddenly behind, I advise just getting away asap. And if a creeper starts hissing behind you WHILE fighting a creeper, just charge at the creeper you were attacking to knock it even further away, while escaping the blast radius of the jerk who popped up behind you.
Spider-jocky - This is the combination of a skeleton and a spider. Just do away with one or the other with the separate above tactics, and finish off the survivor of the first assault with the appropriate tactic.
Cave-spider - These little buggers are annoying. Best thing to do is disable the spawner in which they came from (place torches on all sides of the spawner) and start chopping away like mad. If you get poisoned, you best have a bucket of milk handy, or you'll be taking damage for a while. Yes, milk will get rid of poison. In fact, it'll get rid of ANY ailment, and any potion effect as well, so be careful in that regard. Cave spiders don't have much health, so they're not too grand a threat, especially if one appears at random aside from the spawner. They're really most dangerous as a swarm. Pesky cobwebs getting in the way? Don't want to ruin your shiny new sword chopping through them all? No problem! Use a bucket of water, and the way will be cleared in no time...however, you won't get anything in return from this, thus the price you pay for instant ridding of the cobwebs.
Endermen - Is there any grand way in successfully defeating these guys? No clue. My best bit of advice is to keep staring at him while making your way to him so that you can get the first hit in. A good tactic is being fully armored, and perhaps even only fighting the endermen near your spawn point (whether it be world spawn or your bed spawn, your choice). Some would say to fight him near water, but honestly, they always seem to utterly disappear on me when that happens...
Silverfish - Never fought one, couldn't tell you anything about them. I hear they're a swarm enemy, so be careful.
Slime - Just chop him to bits, and then more bits, and then slimeballs. No real challenge or difficulty to it, they should honestly appear in the overworld.
--------
nether
--------
Ghast - Arrows and bows, bows and arrows. These guys are pathetically easy to defeat, and are only really annoying when in a massive chamber of some sort. Shoot them, shoot their fireballs back at them, or just chop their little legs off if they are foolish to get too near you, your choice. They're huge targets, just be careful not to be too close to an edge, or to be walking on a one-block thick ground above lava or a long drop to the next floor...
Zombeh Pikmin - Want some gold for yourself? These guys carry gold rather often, dropping their butter nuggets like mad. Just be careful that there aren't too many around, and take them down like regular zombies, really. Be careful about any small holes or crevices, they like to hide in them.
Magma Cube - Same thing as slimes, only kinda groovy looking when jumping around. Also, they drop magma cream instead of slimeballs. Chop, chop, chop the cube...
Blaze - Snowballs! That's right, a handful o' snowballs can take one o' these guys down easily, and best part is: snowballs are semi-rapid fire items. worst part: you can only hold 16 in a stack. Aside from carrying never-melt-snow in your pocket, you aught to carrying in some potions of fire resistance with a time boost to it so that it'll last a long time. Some health restoring potions wouldn't hurt either. Once potioned up, start swinging that sword, as the blazes are not something I advise attacking from afar.
------------
The End
------------
Enderdragon - Lots and lots of armor. That's all I know. I never beat the dragon, and honestly, never really made it to the end legitimately. I've been there on a server once, and immediately got smote by the enderdragon. I was cloaked in full iron armor with enchantments (do believe it had enchantments, at least).
P.S. Snowballs also hurt the enderdragon, though it's not as much as it would hurt a Blaze.

I think the terror inspired by monsters is a result of the average player's first few nights in single-player. People who start right in on multiplayer and learn from others never get to experience the same level of terror that one gets from being repeatedly and rapidly murdered before you learn how to craft things and build shelter.
I am pretty fearless these days (in no small part thanks to my Blast Protection IV Diamond Pants) but I can still remember the old fear that noises in the dark produced.

I'm caught in some sort of frigging Limbo!
K, so I went out of the Nether to Giz's farm. I saw some a massive patch of watermelons, and seeing the amount, I thought it wouldn't hurt to take some. Then, I went to break a couple of watermelons. Then I lagged out.
Now, I'm caught in a loop.
First, I start phasing through dirt endlessly in an annoying loop. I relog, and I fall through into the ocean. Then, I go to swim to the surface...and I go back to my original spot, then fall into the ocean again. Then, I try to get to the surface...then I go back to my original spot, and endlessly phase through dirt.
WHAT THE HELL.

I cannae hold this seed to myself any longer.
I am using the current snapshot, if that makes any difference, but the seed I am using is Awesome Sauce.
You start off in a plains biome near a beach, forest, and jungle biome. If that alone isn't enough to get you interested, there's more! there's an ENORMOUS mineshaft that seems to extend the whole island so far (the island being more like a continent so far) with even part of it exposed to the open (this is on one side of the jungle biome, near a hills and desert biome), and in the jungle biome is a jungle temple as well. if you head to the opposite side of the island from the spawn plains (coming from the direction of the beach, if you know what I mean) and you head left once you hit another beach and follow said beach line, you'll eventually come to a village that grows wheat (big whoop >_>) AND potatoes (okay, getting better) AND carrots (now that's just dandy right there). The town itself is mostly farmers, but there is also a priest and a librarian.
If those shiny overworld type things ain't got you interested yet, there's more!
If you build a nether portal around your spawn point in the world, you can easily find a nether fort from there, and I believe there's an easy to find blaze spawner too. Of course, this is kinda requiring you to "island hop" your way to it. There's a big cavey area opening up to islands and lava death below, just make cobble bridges (ghasts can't destroy cobble, at least not easily, that is) between islands and the spawn point and eventually the nether fort and whammo!
But what about the resources?
Well hold on to your lugnuts, because there's iron ore aplenty JUST in the overworld. within the mineshaft you'll find oodles of cave spider spawners, so many much easily obtainable string and spider eyes. And that's not all, and here's an easy one to get, in the town is a cave right beside the church
enter this cave, and mine the iron you see right in the start and one should be right over a nice fall down
it'll take a nice bite out of your health if you plummet down, but find your own way whether it's just falling or using a bucket o' water to gently float down. If you're using a bucket, might as well just let it take you even lower, as that's where you're going next, a big ol' hole right to your left when you go down. Down that hole (which is safe to jump into, just take the gradual platforms down) you'll find even more iron (yay iron), and mine it, and you'll see yet another hole down through where it was. I just plummeted down that hole...onto four diamond, just sitting there. That's where I am now, and that's not even the first diamonds I found. I found a large deposit relatively near the spawn area as well (of course, digging down that is. not straight, but it's in a downward angle, obviously).
but yes, I've loved this seed since I started using it, but it keeps giving more reason to love the carp out of it.
So, the snapshot I am using is the current one: 12w36a

So, I've sorta been experimenting with fighting endermen, and here's an update on fighting them, I guess.
ENDERMEN SLAYING TIPS:
So, need enderpearls? Grand. Well, at night there should be plenty o' endermen around, but let's prepare a bit first. First up, make some sort of cranny to fit inside. You see, he's about 3 blocks high. You're only two. Make a two block high passage and he can't reach ya.
Now, he likes to warp behind you, so be careful of that, but be careful because if there's not any good spot to spawn behind you he may just forget about you and never show up again. Or shows up three days later while you're chilling out in your house smelting irons and he pops out of nowhere and ends your life. This has happened a few times. Always at a very inopportune moment in time. I've died all but one time from this.
But yes, make some sort of alcove near your home, or even on your home (PROTIP: this will also deter spiders from being able to climb up on your roof) and wait for an enderman in the distance and start your battle.
This is also best when there isn't any mobs or CREEPAHZ around. Make sure none are near or have the likelihood to notice you when you begin.
That is all today, unless anyone has any questions on how to fight anything.
As soon as my analysis is fully complete on the Wither Skeleton, and possibly even the Wither, I will make a totally updated post on how to fight monsters. You know, for the cowardly and those who haven't had the misfortune of fighting something yet. Things are definitely changing with the somewhat new game mechanics, mostly with zombies and skellingtons.

Master K's way of dealing with Endermen is efficient and prevents them from losing interest. (Sorry MK for posting this, but it is a cool way of dealing with 'em :P)
All you need to do is cobble up 4-blocks in the open, he can't take cobble or reach you. The downside is that if there are skelies or spiders around you're going to get knocked down (creepers don't blow up at that distance from what I've seen, and zombies can't reach either). This probably works best in The End sans Dragon, where you can kite the Endermen.

Endermen? I usually just wear a Pumpkin and whack 'em with whatever I happen to be carrying. This varies in effectiveness based on how much the server's lagging for you.
To make things easier and faster, hunt them in big deserts where everything is flat and mobs are easy to see and use texture packs that omit the pumpkin overlay so you can see better.
Now, if there happen to be a whole bunch in one area, such as The End, then I very much like Master K's method and would like to try it myself some time. I've always wanted my own stockpile of Ender Pearls so that I can warp wherever I please. I still want to make a flying hideout that can only be accessed with a pillar or an Ender Pearl. Or a damage-less TNT human launcher, if I can ever figure out how to make that work.
Oh, and hey, Meowskivich, I'd like it if you posted a few pictures of your world (this thread has been lacking in pictures for a while.) I want to see what an exposed mine shaft looks like.

Oh, uh...about that, I had to put that world out of it's misery as I caused a pretty bad glitch or bug or whatever to occur that literally made the world go mad. Though since I have the seed, I suppose I can make a new incarnation of it and show you.
Long story short (removing all hilarity that went with it), I died just as the game made me go through a nether portal, this caused crashing, and upon reloading blazes and wither skellys stopped spawning and portals were freaking out and popping up continually for some strange reason. Also, mobs were behaving oddly and things were just generally falling apart.
It made me sad, I found a motherload of diamond in that world...
But sure, I'll get you some pics of the exposed mineshaft.
