Found a bizarre area where a mine shaft and a dungeon intersected, along with some... other thing, which made the floor collapse. I have no idea what's going on here.

Also, the next update is going to contain Cocoa Plants! You can plant them along the sides of jungle wood and harvest for cocoa beans. As I said on the server already, brown sheep and cookie picnics, here we come!

This is where I live now, temporarily. That slab of dirt was there when I got there, very strange and definitely deserving of a house. Before resuming my work on New Jerusalem and the surrounding area, I want to explore a bit more here, make a massive wall out of sugar cane, and make a railway connecting to James's megarail.

Did I promise I'd build a sugar wall? Because I built a sugar wall.

Also, I discovered a very surprising challenge: Hardcore Mode, Superflat world generation. First you need to find a village for shelter (re-create the world if you can't find one on the horizon), then loot everything available, and then prepare for a truly horrific night. You need to kill Spiders in order to get enough string to make wool to make a bed, but at the same time you'll be contending with hundreds of slimes due to the low, superflat world you're walking on. And then by the time you return to the village, it's no longer safe since Zombies are everywhere and there won't be a single door left to protect you.

Following THAT, you'll need to harvest the village wheat and grow some of your own, or else you'll surely die of hunger. (or you could eat zombie flesh) I figure by now you've all figured out that you can destroy the village structured for their precious little wood and stone quantities, which is the best you're going to get. If you're lucky, the village will have a smithy with some good treasures in it. If there's iron, use it very wisely! If there's armor, wear it immediately! If there's saplings, then those are the greatest gift of all as you'll be able to start a wood-harvesting operation, preferably up on a floating dirt platform.

Speaking of which, elevation is your best friend in Superflat Survival. If you go to the top of a village watch tower, which has fence posts lining the roof, nothing will be able to hurt you as long as you cover the entrance back up. (Not even spiders will jump over fence posts!) I can't guarantee the roof will be safe by the time you get there, though, since slimes can spawn absolutely anywhere, in great quantities, and there is nothing you can do about it except punch them out of your way.

This is the closest I feel like I've ever gotten to a "zombie apocalypse" type of survival game, except the slimes are much more numerous and frightening than the zombies. You will never be able to work in peace, because they are everywhere. You can hide in a building and leave a little one-block air hole to look through, but the little ones will slip in and give you nightmares.

There is no ultimate goal (high score I guess? Slimes give off a lot of exp), but it is a pretty unique experience and I'd recommend giving it a shot at least once to see how long you can last.

The safest way down is to dig away the same pillar you used to get up there. I actually survived a fall from it when I was working on the wingtip. I managed to steer myself through the air as I fell, and landed in the river below! Zero hearts damage! :)

Sigh...I don't play Minecraft. However, I searched for games like Minecraft, and found a downloadable game called King Arthur's Gold. It is actually the source of my current avatar. It's a game like Terraria where you can build and such, but you also can fight online, fight solo, sandbox, or fight solo zombie apocolypse. The game is free, but you can upgrade to premium. It's pretty fun, and you can host servers for it. Do any of you guys play it?

Dwarf Fortress. Though the learning curve is much, much, much steeper, and the level of complexity does tend to turn some people off.

Ah, I had to go cold turkey on Dwarf Fortress. The last time I played I think was for like 18 hours solid without stopping for anything but bathroom breaks.

I normally only like to play free games, and rarely make exceptions for commercial games, but Minecraft is so good that i am glad I forked over the cash for it.

If you are looking for a free minecraft clone, http://minetest.net/ is very nice. I would probably just play it if I wasn't already so emotionally invested in our minecraft server :)

Crikey, and I thought I went overboard with DF.

Though my 8 z-level tall prison tower made of polished black marble with bars made of platinum surrounded by a moat of magma might indeed be a sign I might be going a bit crazy...


Hmm, if I were going to go and buy Minecraft, would it really be worth it? Or should sticking to DF or giving minetest a go be good enough?

I would say Minecraft is easily worth the price. There are frequent content updates, and it really is exceptionally fun to play - whatever your play style is. That and the world generator always finds ways to surprise and often inspire you.

:P My friend, you haven't DF'd until you build a 32 z-level tall upside-down pyramid over an ocean biome (then had the joy of removing the single support holding it up with all your Dorfs inside).

It got an update only a few days ago, we have minecarts, proper stone hauling and parabolic flight arcs for those lovely carts full of stones and nobles! (yes, yes it is fun... next step for me is launching a cart like this at a room full of cats).
