We've discussed the possibility of holding an OHR Con in IRC some over the past few days, sort of jokingly, but I personally think it has potential. I know of other gaming/dev communities that have held them, even at super low budgets, successfully.
The last gather the OHR had was "OHR House," which happened about ten years ago! Only four people showed up, but the community was also somewhat less together at that point, and I believe it was a rushed affair to begin with. If you remember, everyone met up at a place Chaos Nyte had available.
Personally, for the next couple of years I'm going to be in a decent position to attend a Con. I don't know about everyone else, but I'd love to discuss the possibility of a meetup even if it's only theoretical.
Possible ways of organizing a Con I can think of:
1. Everyone gets rooms at one hotel near a "real" con like PAX or MAGfest. I went to PAX East this year and I'm pretty sure it would be a ton of fun going to something like that with a group of similarly interested people. The drawback is that this is more expensive than the alternative.
2. Like in "OHR House," somebody hosts a gathering with games, pizza, and nearby places of interest to visit. This would obviously be a more personality-dependent deal, and I can understand more being uncomfortable with it, but I'd still consider going myself. It would be cheaper than attending a real con.
Both of these have issues, naturally. I don't have a good place for people to hang out where I live personally, and I wouldn't ever want to force such a thing on somebody.
The location of the meetup is something to keep in mind, of course. I believe that most OHR folk are in the southeast and southwest US? Aethereal suggested Athens, GA, and I think that is a great location, but anyway, what do you guys think? Would you consider coming to an OHR con?
Thanks for the discussion

In spite of logistical difficulties, I am behind this idea.
Unfortunately don't have the budget to travel very far (not this year anyway).
I think that "Game Making Jam" might be a better model to pattern this after than "Con" even if it does end up happening at/near a real Convention.

That is fine with me, we can call it the OHR PB & J Sandwich for all it matters!
Yeah, travel costs are something important to consider--I was behind Athens because it's right near Atlanta (which is easy to get to) and a more fun place to be than Atlanta generally.

This would probably be interesting, but money's tight for a lot of people right now, I'm guessing. But I'm definitely interested in the idea, and if I get the new job I'm thinking about, I'd have the money to travel wherever. I have no idea where would be good though.

Wouldn't have to be there particularly. I'm actually in New Hampshire now, so somewhere like Boston or Montreal would be easier for me. It would definitely have to be in the US though--can't be sure everyone has passports, and the majority of users live in the US.

I think I warmed up more to the idea after moving to the middle of nowhere.

I'd be down for this if it were in a decent area of the east coast so that I could drive from Jacksonville, FL. Heck, if there are any people in southern FL that could go, you could meet up in Jax and we could caravan.

I'm becoming a regular Con goer, but I live in the UK. If this really takes off and you guys hold this every year, then maybe in a year or two I'll be willing to get on my first plane and go abroad
.
If it wasn't for the location I'd say DCon would have been a great venue, it has free tables and no entrance fees. It's one major flaw is that it's held at The University of Dundee (Scotland). I'm planning on advertising the OHR at AlCon come September time to make myself a shirt
, if anyone makes flyers send me a template and I'll take 'em with me.
Not a serious suggestion, but a fun air-travel fact: My Dad's friends live in Latvia, and to get from here and back on a return ticket it costs £30 (roughly $60, or a bit less).
tl;dr: I'll come in the future; I'm going to hype the OHR at AlCon and air-fees to Latvia are cheap as chips.

Are we saying that we want to stick to the East Coast? If so, then in about a year I might be able to host a casual one of this. If I get the job I'm looking at, I'd be in northern VA, close enough to DC or Richmond if we want to go hang out in a city.
Alternatively, if this is within a day's drive from me, I'm willing to pick up anyone more or less along the way.
