I for one would be interested in an 8-bit contest. But yeah, things have been relatively quiet recently.

It's funny you mention the 8-bit Contest as I was just thinking about it the other day. I still definitely want to do it at some point. I know you tried to get me to do it a year or two back and I totally flaked on the whole thing.
I feel pretty certain that I can make it happen at some point this year though.

Super funny you mention that as I have been working on a NES style game, which is 8-bit. Or do you mean 8-bit graphics not CPUs? 'Cause 8-bit graphics is a whopping 256 color palette, which ultimately OHRRPGCE only support 8-bit color.
So if you propose such a contest, be sure to specify if you mean 8-bit CPU like game or 8-bit color game. Some devs might play the smartass and make an 8-bit color game, and if it's not explicit in your rules, they can enter it into the 8-bit contest.
I think it would be more interesting to have EGA and CGA RPG game contests, as we all know how god awful some of those old games looked in terms of color saturation. Some games made great use of such limited color palettes, while others fell trying and turned into an eye sore. There's also the VGA 16 color palette as well which we could consider for a contest... So many ideas and too little years to live in this world, wonder when they'll finally be-able to stop the aging process so I can make OHR games for eternity. Hmm, maybe I'll get some sort of rad fungi infection and turn into one of those Zombies from that recently released game.
We've done "8-bit" contests in the past. Check out the archives to see how they worked.

I'm excited about finally showing off some new, updated content beyond what the demo version of Ruin had to offer! You can click on any image to see a higher res version of it.
Whaling Atrium in "The Omega"
In The Omega once you revisit Derf after teaming up with Gluep, the team has to travel through an area that was called the "Whaling Atrium". It was a cavern of sorts that was formed from the massive earthquakes surrounding the game's story and it served as a route to your next destination. In The Omega, this area was quite short and provided very little content.
In Ruin, this area has been completely redesigned from the ground up!
The new Whaling Atrium in Ruin, now called Beggar's Cavern.
For starters, the map itself is at least 2-3 times the size of the original, and offers multiple paths to explore for those seeking hidden loot. In addition and without giving too much away, there is a bandit-related scripted event that follows you throughout the area. The map itself has also been renamed Beggar's Cavern, to properly match the new bandit-ish theme.
Beggar's Cavern also houses brand new enemies...
As well as enemies from The Omega, completely revamped:
The Otamot in The Omega
The redesigned Otamot in Ruin.
And those who played The Omega will recognize this guy. Not only has he been updated graphically but also boasts completely new combat mechanics.
Terra Firma in The Omega
Terra Firma in Ruin
More to come soon!

Really? Interesting..any particular reason why you like the original better? I for one prefer the new one but I am partial to the manlier beard and red eyebrows.

Oh! A manlier beard! I thought you had added a big bushy moustache.
Pixel art interpretation is subjective at best, but here are how I see Fred's old and new faces
The old face seems noseless and anime-esque, which might not be what you wanted, but it is pretty consistent with the noseless anime-esque face style in Final Fantasy 4/5/6 so I think that is why I liked it.
The new beard looks to me like an enormous bushy moustache with a chin peeking out from underneath. It makes Fred seem twice as old to me, and likely to speak in a very thick British accent.
What if you just move the beard 1 pixel lower on his face?

That mustache is fantastic! And now that you mention it I totally see what you mean. I'll do a little tinkering and see if I can adjust it some. After seeing your photo though I almost wish it was a mustache.

I've no idea why, sorta, but the clouds in the backgrounds look like they have wings in which they flap.
