Thanks guys!

I forgot to mention an update regarding the music. Ruin has an original soundtrack and it appears that it will be coming from more sources than I originally planned, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

There are songs that I composed myself, as well as remixes of some public domain songs. Jabbercat composed several great songs for me until he had to stop unexpectedly. That's when Vampiducki started up for me, and he will most likely do the rest of the music (and has done a fantastic job so far).

Kain, the composer of many songs from the Ends of the Earth series, has always been one of my favorite composers. It wasn't until recently that I found out that several tracks that were claimed to be written by Kain were actually composed by Aaron Walz. They were probably used without permission as well, but who knows.

I mention all of that to say that I've officially licensed two of my favorite songs from the Ends of the Earth 2 score (NOT composed by Kain, but rather by Aaron Walz). That way the usage of these two songs are totally legal if I decide to go the shareware route with Ruin once its complete.

The songs are Crystal Fields and Soul's Respite.

I will admit that I drew some inspiration from Cagnazzo. Good job catching that!

Holy crap! Almost two months and no update! Well I'm here to fix that...

Ruin is alive and well, though it hadn't seen any updates until yesterday. Progress has been way slow, but I intend to work at least a good 30 minutes each day until it is finish. Hopefully once I get my break from college, I can work on it for multiple hours a day.

I'm still about 50% of the way through, and just finished re-scripting the boat scene after Hamburg (which is totally different now).

I've also decided to scrap the name and come up with a new title, though it will probably remain "Ruin" until launch date. If you've played this game and The Omega, and have been following my updates here, I'd welcome any suggestions to a new title. Please PM them to me, though.

I hope to have some screenies of new/updated areas soon!

After two weeks of work, I have finally managed to complete another section of the game! This time I tackled Camp Kole, which was formerly known as "Thrallburg" in The Omega.

Camp Kole is a VERY story-driven section of the game. While I kept most of the story itself intact, the area still received a graphical overhaul as well as a dialogue revamp. The plot delivery itself was also tweaked a bit. I actually couldn't believe how awful some of the dialogue was, so I'm hoping the changes make it a much more pleasant experience this time around. I'm told most people really liked this part in The Omega, but I don't see how considering the state of the dialogue.

Because of the nature of this particular area, it was very difficult for me to choose screenshots that would not spoil a part of the story. I did my very best to keep these spoiler-free but had to censor some of them in the end. If you are worried about potential story spoilers, then avoid those for sure.

If you've played The Omega up to this point, then it won't be giving anything away, however.

This guy also received a portrait graphic as well as a hero/walkabout graphic overhaul. I'll avoid mentioning his name to avoid spoilers.

The next few areas are going to be a fairly large undertaking for me, so I'm taking a break from tile work to catch up on some enemy graphics.

Once you reach the snowy area in The Omega, you will start seeing a lot of re purposed and color swapped sprites.

In Ruin, I'm scrapping 90% of these "rehased" enemy sprites and making completely new enemies in their place.

The only ones I'm keeping are the couple that were not used in any areas outside of snowy regions.

In the spirit of Halloween, I give you the re-tooling of my Treant and Homunculus' sprites:

The Omega0000

Ruin0000

The Omega0001

After:
Ruin0002

I'll post the entire set of new enemies once they are complete!

Great work on the tree!

For the fuzzy monster with the big mouth, how would the new version look if it had white hair like the old version did?

I think the white hair makes it look creepier because:

I've decided to split these up a bit instead of saving all of them for one screenshot. More details can be seen this way, though I'll still probably group several sprites together in the future to avoid posting 100 times.

History shows us that grandaddy long legs have made grown men fall to their knees and scream like little girls. They've also been used as weapons of mass destruction in wars of ages past.

Okay, so none of that is true, but I am seriously terrified of these things. Always have been, and growing up with two olders brothers didn't help. They would constantly throw these things at me and laugh until they cried.

They are essentially the bane of my existence.

The Omega did not have any daddy long legs because I hate them. However, they were a common enemy in Fred's Great Adventures of the Lost World. For nostalgia's sake (and to quit being a pansy) I sucked it up and made a long leg sprite for Ruin, in honor of the game that started it all for me.

Fred's Long Legs:

Fred0000

Ruin's Long Legs:

Ruin0003

Haha! That is a great sprite!

For some reason, the part of my brain that is supposed to be afraid of daddy long-legs spiders is broken. I know that terror is the only rational reaction, but when I look at them, the crossed wires in my brain spark, and I go "Awwww" as if I am looking at a tiny spindly-legged puppy.

Once in high school, I was in a super-boring class, and I found one crawling along the floor. As gently as I could, I let it crawl onto my hand. I then just kept putting one hand in front of the other over and over, and let it crawl endlessly across my palms. This went on for the entire lecture, and at the end, I let it crawl onto the wall and scuttle away, and then I brushed off the faint mist of tiny web strands it had left wrapped all around my hands.

True story! Happy Halloween!

Haha! You sir, are stronger than I!

Let me introduce a couple new enemies.

First up is the Talfeyr, which crudely translates to "tall fat guy" in Danish:

Ruin0004

I actually used the skeleton of my ape sprite to come up with this one.
