Sounds like the participants in this thread need MOTIVATION, so I tried finding a neat motivational poster to stick here. Unfortunately, the internet is a horrible place that wants to doom us all, so all I found were sarcastic demotivators.
Instead, I offer some advice and an unrelated picture:
Do most of your brainstorming and conceptualization offline, or even off of a computer entirely if you're easily distracted. Everyone loves movies, whether they're amazingly good or hilariously bad!

Maybe if I finish the PG version fast enough, I'll do a Director's Cut with slightly more anthropomorphized animals. Not likely, though. Still, looks like I'll definitely be going for horror.

I noticed the above image was broken so I went and got a poster for you.

You're welcome, Baconlabs.

Completely agree! I keep notebooks and various colored pens for recording my random brainstorms and outlining things before I sit down to work on anything. You can (or I do) get totally lost or end up doing things I didn't need to if I do it on the fly. Pre-plan! Oh, yeah, and avoid the net when actually trying to accomplish things.

No motivational images, but how 'bout some inspirational quotes to get us all rolling:

Quote:
Amateurs wait for inspiration. The rest of us just get up and go to work.

Quote:
A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills and uses these skills to accomplish his goals.

Let's all be winners! (Well, technically only three of us, but we're all "winners" if we try, right?)

Entries don't have to be super long to be submitted. Remember that. This could encourage any/everyone to enter. But we figured we'd announce the contest now to see if there was any buzz. Sounds like it should be a pretty fair turn out.

This might be a good time to remind everyone about the animation scripts I posted in HamsterSpeak #25. They should make your scripting go a lot faster.

What degree of interactivity is allowed? Can there be, for example, a minigame that doesn't affect the story beyond maybe a couple lines of dialogue?

Minigames I think are crossing the line between movie and game. I think if you wanted to mix it up and use something like the viewer chooses a text box option, that would be tolerable, but actual player interactivity like what you're saying would compromise the point of the contest.

Minigames and interactivity in movies

If I was watching Tron, I wouldn't want to be interrupted by a brief lightcycle race with the enemy that I actually have to control. (However, I can imagine some people thinking it would be awesome to the max. So, Mogri, do whatever. I think its reception will be polarized.)

Now, here's what ran through my mind: Pick-your-own-path types of movies. It's like the books, but as a movie. As a game. Whatever, you get what I'm saying. The movie plays to a certain point, where the viewer is prompted to pick one of various choices, which will alter the rest of the story from that point forward. Or maybe for one little scene. It could be anything.
I wouldn't mind seeing this. In fact, I'm completely expecting this because these will be movies made with a game engine, and the potential is there even if you just use the bare minimum built-in text box choices of yes and no.

I have started an entry for this contest. I only have one brief scene so far. I really want to keep my motivation up.

What I have planned for the next bit of Eternity Fragment is pretty linear, and I was actually considering doing it as a short film anyway. Count me in...

Nice furry lookin' cast there.

I started my movie project the other night. Been dividing my time between it and my game. I should probably just work on the movie so I can have it ready in time. Either way I'm going to use it as the prequel to my game.

Bit of an update, I'm going to try and rope in some friends to criticize the script when I finish it so that the end product will be that much better.

I'm guessing it's okay to start working on the script? The contest doesn't officially begin until the 21st. Oh, that reminds me, I should start working on the script. By the time the 21st rolls around, I should have some semblance of an idea of what I am doing with this script. Now it is time to start working on the script, that script ain't gonna write itself.
