Just want to say that the new Resident Evil and the port of SF4 are the first visually impressive games on the system, Kid Icarus still looks bland, Nintendogs is a minor step up from the previous version, and Pilotwings has shovelware quality visuals. I'm used to first party titles being the best looking titles on a Nintendo system so I'm kind of shocked here.

Also, just leaving this here, on the price debate:

"UBM TechInsights reported that the cost of physical components of the 3DS is $101, the figure is about $15 more than the cost of the DSi. The 3DS retail price is $249 in North America."

Just a reminder that most game systems are sold at a loss or at even at launch.

I got to try the 3DS at PAX East. I thought it looked great without the 3D on, but I can barely make out the image when it is. The start and select buttons are a little odd.

I will probably wait until the "Lite" comes out for this one, though I am tempted because I need a way to transfer my old pokemanz from Heart Gold to Black. (Brilliant marketing, as usual)

Isn't there a WiiWare program to do this? Maybe it doesn't work with the newer games but I thought there was.

And yeah, there's really no reason to buy a Nintendo handheld at launch when you know a revision is only a year off.

Hm... Not that I'm aware of. There was an old Gamecube game that did it, but it only worked with r/s/e.

Looking around it sounds like Pokemon Ranch lets you transfer some stuff but it's not quite the same and isn't as useful, and it probably doesn't work with the games after Diamond/Pearl. This sort of program for the new games kind of seems like an obvious product, but, Nintendo.

Also apparently the 3DSware store uses actual money instead of Nintendo Fun Bucks? If so, and if you can buy things without needing to put money in in $10 increments, that's a big thumbs up right there.

I want the 3DS now only because of the super mario game that's coming out on it.

This one, right? I dunno, looks kinda samey [that Comet Medal fills me with dread, is this just going to be Super Mario Galaxy 3 (DS)?] but the handful of screens don't reveal anything substantial, so my argument is moot for now.
Also, I'm willing to bet that 98% of 3DS games will only be taking advantage of its 3D features to create a minimalistic diorama effect. To be on the safe side, ignore the phrase "3D" when you look at a game's title and ask yourself if it's still worth buying.

I can't believe I've already gotten so cynical with the 3DS, it still isn't on the market. It will probably be on the market by the time you read this, well maybe not, I checked today and all 3DS units were recalled due to the earthquake.

All games have to work 100% in 2D and 3D mode so yeah.

On a 3DS game note that I never thought I'd be interested in but now want, the new Ghost Recon game is a turn based strategy game designed by the lead designer of XCOM. It was apparently going to be a regular DS game, but moved to the 3DS at the last minute, so now it's going to be a very long time before I get to play it.

Yes, and the fact that the 3D mode doesn't even work for some people's eyes.

It hasn't even been a week, and there's already a massive need for firmware updates. All I have to say about this is, I'm glad I didn't rush to buy one. I think the waiting game will be the best game to play for now.

It's a major bug, yes, but it's also the only known crippling software bug, and if that article is true, then it has already been fixed and most people getting a 3DS now will be bypassing the firmware that caused it to begin with.

My wife got hers yesterday. Caveat: only the top screen is 3D. Maybe you knew this already.

I finally got to try Pilotwings in person at Best Buy, and it does look better in motion than I expected... in 2D mode. The art style's still boring and awful, but that's a problem with Nintendo's current design philosophy and not the system. The 3D worked fine when I was looking at the background, but I could NOT focus on my guy. That's a major problem with bad 3D; if everything's equally in focus, like video games usually are, my eyes can't follow it properly. There's a very good reason why (decent) 3D movies keep a lot of things out of focus, to force your eyes to focus on what's important to getting the most out of their depth. I couldn't tell where Pilotwings wanted me to focus and it gave me a headache.

Face Raiders seemed fun but it was kind of impossible to play while tethered to the kiosk at the store. Also, the 3D effect is kind of hard to use in a game where you're physically moving the system around.

The start/select/home buttons ARE odd.

I've had a 3DS since launch, and haven't had a single crash as of yet. I really don't think that this is a big deal, considering a lot of hardware/software launch and have sporadic and spotty issues that are fixed but don't plague the entire customer base.
