Wow, that's a confusing title, huh? Here it is: a contest to make the best battle you can make without giving the player any options besides Fight.
That's it: your game has to showcase a single battle where the player has no access to any battle commands except for Fight (which for the purposes of this contest is defined as a move that targets a single enemy). Don't worry about graphics, story, or anything else - you'll be judged solely on the battle.
How to Enter: PM me your game or post it in this thread. I'll release a compendium of the entries and players will vote on their favorite.
Note: Unless you submit a complete game, please don't upload your game to the gamelist. If you do submit a complete game, please make sure to include a SAV file and instructions on which battle should be judged.
Deadline: February 1.
No prizes except glory and honor. It's a pretty simple contest anyway!
Allowed
Equipment: You can give the player a selection of equipment and the chance to set up his equipment before the battle.
Multiple Heroes: You can give the player any size party you want, so long as they all have the same basic Fight command.
Hits Stat: You can give different heroes different stats, including the X Hits stat.
Multiple Enemies: Go crazy.
Enemy Attacks: Enemies are not restricted to a single command and can use any variety of attacks.
Enemy Behavior: Enemies can have different reactions to the Fight command. Do anything you want with the enemies themselves.
Special Fight command: So long as your Fight command meets the definition (move that targets a single enemy), you can do anything else you want with it. It doesn't even need to be named "Fight."
Disallowed
Alternative Fight commands: The player can only use one Fight command. No giving different attacks to different characters/weapons. No giving different elemental properties to different characters/weapons.
Items: No potions, etc.
Multiple Battles: No giving the player a different battle if he sneaks up behind the enemy, etc. Everyone gets the same battle.
Other Sneakiness: Don't try to circumvent the rules.
Hints & Tips
At first glance, this contest seems terribly restrictive. Here are a couple of ideas to help get you out of the "hold down Space to win" rut:
Timing: The easiest example of making timing matter is the Mist Dragon from FF4. If you attack at the wrong time, it counterattacks.
Targeting: There are plenty of examples of making targeting matter. Does the player need to hit the targets in a certain order? Does he need to defeat the healer first?
Good luck!

Sounds good, I've got some ideas to work with already.
(No, I'm not reuploading anything from Viridia chapter 2)
I'm guessing that healing is forbidden. For instance, giving someone a healing staff that hurts enemies and heals allies or something, that's not allowed. So I'm going to ignore that possibility.

Shiz: You can have a million enemies in this battle if that suits you.
Baconlabs: The rule is that there must be one attack and everyone must have that attack. For the purposes of this contest, we'll define Fight as a move that targets a single enemy. (Updating OP to reflect this)

But... you can only have eight enemies onscreen at once.
I suppose one could circumvent this by making 7 enemies, and having the eighth one be invisible and spawn different stuff when alone, maybe even throw in some tags for variety.
A simpler solution for having tons of enemies is to make seperate battles, but have them strung together one after another with a plotscript, with no pause in-between. That's kind of like one long battle, right?
I feel like I might be asking too many questions, and none of them apply to the game I'm entering.

Nope, none at all.
All heroes, no matter what, will be restricted to one basic attack. I guess the Item menu is still accessible, but you're not supposed to do anything with it.
Er, wait. Is there a way to remove the Item selection from battle menus yet?

Yeh, that's exactly what I mean. You see when Moogle talks about not circumventing the rules I wonder just what he's afraid I could do, because of course a single battle with just fight, i can do a lot with it but don't want to be disqualified.
Sephy: Yes.
Twins: What Baconlabs said. No battle-usable items.
Shizuma: As long as you stay within the general spirit of the rules, you're not gonna get disqualified. Be creative; that's the whole point of the contest. You can do anything you want with the enemies, but you should keep to the restrictions for the heroes.
Baconlabs: There's no real reason to split it into two separate battles. If you feel like you really really need to split your battle in two, let me know what you're thinking about and I might make an exception.

Something that's been brought to my attention:
It's possible to make the Fight command chain differently based on what the attacking hero has equipped. Please don't abuse this to give the heroes effectively different attacks. (This definitely falls into "Other Sneakiness.")
This is definitely a gray area. I would be okay with equipment affecting a hero's critical hit%, for example, but I would be less okay with equipment making a hero's attack drain life on hit if the attack didn't do that to begin with.
Please DO be creative and clever with your entries; please DON'T try to reverse-engineer your way around the basic idea of the contest.
(Oh, and JSH knows this already, but his entry is disqualified for reasons that are obvious to anyone who's beaten it. Entertaining, though.)

Do anything you want with the enemies. You can even make an ally-enemy that has nonstandard attacks.
Rule Zero of the contest: The player-controlled party can only use a single attack, and that attack is always the same.
Different enemies responding differently to that attack? OK! Enemies doing wacky and unexpected stuff? Fine! Just follow Rule Zero and you'll come out OK.
