OHR Game of the Year 2010 Rules

WHAT
It's that time again; the time in which we gloat about how great the games we released this year were. My count is 60 released games this year, counting updates to games from previous years, but not counting multiple releases of the same games in one year. Let me know if I missed any. The goal here is to highlight the absolute best of 2010, in various categories.

WHEN
Voting begins now and goes until March 13, 2011, giving everyone plenty of time to catch up on games they missed. The results will appear in the April issue of HamsterSpeak.

GAMES?
"I haven't played any of these games yet!" Well, you've got a couple of months to play some. How do you know which ones are worth playing? That's up to these threads. Even if you're not ready to officially vote yet, discuss and nominate your favorite games of the year. Let people know what's worth checking out.

HOW
Votes can be submitted either by PM, e-mail or by responding to the GOTY2010 discussion threads. I think that posting in the thread is good, as it will help remind people of what was fun this year, and maybe inspire people to try a few new games.

Vote for your favorite five to ten games in the Game of the Year category. Vote for your favorite two to five in the sub-categories. Your first through third place picks in the main category will receive bonus points, first getting three extra, second getting two, and third getting one extra point in the overall standings. In the sub-category votes, only your top pick will receive bonus points.

You CAN vote for your own games, but those games will not receive bonus points. Bonus points will be given to the highest ranked games in your vote that weren't made by you. When voting, specify if you worked on the game in question. Use full titles when voting. Don't have tied votes in your submission. Votes can be changed up until the deadline if you play some new games and change your mind, but make sure you notify us if you do so.

VocabMosaic
What is a Zelda Game?
Who Killed Dinosaur Giant?
Yo Ghost Reborn

These are the categories:

Best Game of 2010: The overall best games. Vote for five to ten games.

Best Graphics: Best style, best pixelation, etc. Whatever made your eyes weep with joy. Vote for two to five games.

Best Design: This can be Plotscripting, map design, battle systems, or any other technical game aspects. Vote for two to five games.

Best Writing: Story, dialogue, world creation. Vote for two to five games.

Most Ridiculous: What games baffled your mind this year? The reasons don't matter. It could be an astonishingly confusing game, a shockingly funny one, whatever. Some sort of wild card category or something.

Most Anticipated 2011: What games would you most like to see updated this year, and which announced games are you most excited about? You'll have to do the digging on your own for this one, because we get dozens of proposed games that never come out and finding/listing them all would take forever.

Let's do this. Start discussing some highlights of 2010 and we can get moving. When voting, feel free to comment on the games you chose. Your comments may be used in the results article! Voting and discussion threads can be found on Slime Salad, Castle Paradox, and the Internet Walrus Forums.

I know I voted Duck too highly, it just meant a lot to me so PLEASE DON'T JUDGE OK?

Best Game:
1. Motrya

2. Duck

3. Do You Want to Be a Hero?
A fun casual-but-challenging RPG that is quite addictive and simplistic. A much better experience than The Wizard's Bomb, and Moogle1's best game yet.

4. Barnabus
A total surprise that still baffles me. 30 games in 30 days, and they're actually entertaining for the most part. This collection makes the entire joke game genre on the OHR seem obsolete. "FRIENDS" is a magnificent conclusion that ties all the chaos together.

5. Legendary Heroes
A fun contest entry that shows amazing promise. Has an excellent flow and is super charming. I'm excited to see it expanded, and kind of surprised Spoonweaver came up with such a fun Generic RPG.

6. Eternity Fragment
Cool Dragon Quest clone that just suffers from a few flaws, like the complexity in finding out where to go. Genuinely enjoyed grinding through this.

7. Batman & Robin
RMZ's best game by far. Open-ended RPG. It could use some NPCs or something, though.

8. Skyfall
Another demo with an interesting set up. I want to see how all the characters interact and where the plot's going.

9. Tilt
Disturbing horror game. Felt like a sketch, but it was a great one and got me interested in future efforts by the creator.

10. Bell of Chaos
That is some crazy plotscripting, and pretty fun after its first update. Some of the best work done with slices on the engine.

Best Graphics:
1. Motrya
To me, everything about it's breathtaking. It's even better than the vision of the game I had in my head.

2. Bell of Chaos
Can't deny it; James owns.

3. Puckamon
This is FNFFEUFHEURHE's best-looking game so far. Great Game Boy imitation, and at least visually it felt like a good tribute to Pokemon.

4. Duck
I picked this cause I crack up whenever I think about it. And I know not everybody understands it, but to me it's like watching the characters from my newbie game look even more ridiculous.

5. Batman & Robin
Pretty good style. Not a lot of great games visually this year, really.

Best Design
1. Motrya
I've been designing the sequence in this demo for many years, although it may not seem like it. It's pretty much drilled in to my head and I'm anxious to get started on the next parts.

2. Barnabus
Pretty much perfect joke game design. A giant barrage of games that combine to become one.

3. Do You Want to Be a Hero?
Well paced, well planned challenges presented to the player. It's all consistent and intuitive, and somewhat ingenious in its own way.

4. Crystal Chasers
I actually don't remember everything about this one, but I loved the scenarios and the way the jobs were available.

5. Eternity Fragment
I mentioned some weaknesses earlier, and they are really the only detraction from the experience. This is a clever, faithful old school JRPG.

Best Writing
1. Motrya

2. Duck
I had more fun writing this than just about anything I've made.

3. Barnabus
So, so, subtly hilarious. And no grammatical errors I could find. I have no idea how Barnabus pulled this off.

4. Who Killed Dinosaur Giant?
Some of Surlaw's best writing, although I still thought the ending was a cop out. It's kind of hard to get at anything in particular, but the characterization is great as usual.

5. Horse Game
I am voting this mainly for the random taunts. The rest was just silly; the taunts are incredible.

Most Ridiculous:
1. Barnabus
I think I covered this above, but yeah, Barnabus wins this one handily.

2. Chronoboy Adventures
Ugh, what the christ is this

3. What is a Zelda Game?
Just... huh? Why does this exist.

4. Duck

5. Seinfeld Teaches Typing
I don't even like Seinfeld and I thought this was hilarious.

The update to Batman & Robin is very near being done. Have to test it, balance it, and all that stuff. But yeah, my goal is to have it on the internet before January 1st for this!

I'm supposing that if we update a game before the March deadline, we should probably keep a legacy version around for voting purposes?

Okay, if you want to disqualify it for being two hours shy of 2010, that's kinda lame, ha. But the final version of Batman & Robin is live and on the internet! Enjoy! And please let me know of any bugs ASAP. There shouldn't be any... But you guys know how that goes.

Just finished downloading any games I had missed (not much thanks to contests) I still need Lightning Heroes, Pacman and Pacwoman, and Pacman Halloween.

If anybody can provide links or contact me on AIM that would be great.

@Surlaw: Can you remove L'Sol Nocturnal Tears from the list? I don't wish for the game to be available to the public at this time.
