(No download links, you'll have to use your imagination!)
Today I experimented with a little idea: Instead of using the default 8bit sound effects during battle scenes, I made some one-second melodies that played depending on who or what was attacking. On paper, this sounded like a really neat idea.
If Mother 3 could do it, maybe I could too!
It turned out to be a huge flop. As I found out, there are many nuances when it comes to using melodies as sound effects, and it takes a trained ear for sound that I am lacking.
-Volume balance needs to be perfect. Compared to the background music, if the melody is too soft, it's unnoticed, and if it's too loud, it's annoying. You can't be off by a single decibel when dealing with this.
-The keys need to match, otherwise you end up with dissonance.
-The tempo needs to sync to some degree, so that one does not distract from the other.
-Timing!
This sort of thing sounds very cool when it's pulled off, as the melody molds and becomes a part of the background music. It's certainly possible, but... maybe not in the OHRRPGCE.
(I'm not sure why I made a thread for this. Maybe it'll be amusing to someone who's done this before.)
nah, it's totally possible in the ohr. i'd actually thought about doing this myself a while back, but then though better of it cause i was like, "it's possible... but REALLY technical." i mean, if you have tons of time to waste to plan it out, compose it and then program it, it can be done. lol.
