Motrya 50% Version Development Journal

Hey everyone...
Well, I made the first major milestone in development on Part II. I know I just released the 24.5% demo last week, but I have been hard at work on this at the same time, and these threads have been helpful for me when it comes to reflection.

Tonight, I finished the first draft of Chapter 2's dialogue. It's 40 pages in Open Office, and I cannot believe I finished it already. Such a huge part of the process, now done...

Chapter 2 is going to have more walking and more talking than the first did. The battles take a significant turn from the first demo as well, as the same strategies you had been using will no longer be as effective in the new region. Lyte Snap will be the same as ever, but you will start to earn some rewards if you've kept up to date with it.

I don't have an estimated release date because the 25% demo isn't even out yet. This is probably for the best. It will come out some time in 2011, however. I hope for the rest as well, though I suspect 2012 is more realistic.

Expect a desert, a beach, and a somewhat more light-hearted tone in this installment.

Updated 1/23/2011

just wanted to pop in and say that motrya is almost definitely my favorite game for the OHR right now.

hell. i had more fun with the card game than any of the final fantasy minigames. if you can keep this level of quality up, i could easily see this being one of my favorite RPGs, including commercial releases. that being said, i hope it opens up a little, although i never once really minded being 'on tracks' through the whole 24.5%, so maybe that isnt even that important.

also, for newbie: the palette is beautiful. those colors look great. and the style the characters are drawn in worked really well, i almost always feel like you can tell far too easily in OHR games that the walkabouts are constrained to the same size space as the tiles, (which is hands down my biggest issue with the engine) but in motrya i barely even noticed. you gotta fix the flickering though! at least on the hero walkabouts...

the music is good too. i found myself putting my headphones on instead of turning my sound off. there's a really jarring part in that piano song though, it sounds like some notes aren't in time or something? every time it looped i jumped a little at that part.

Thanks! It is one of my greatest dreams to be able to make an RPG that compares favorably to the 2D classics, so it's great to hear.

Newbie will probably be in shortly with a response about the walkabouts. The music that's in the game is actually ALL incomplete and currently being worked on. 25% Version should be pretty awesome in terms of audio.

As for the game "opening up," it will always be on-rails, but there will be more exploration and dungeons in the next few Chapters

yea. one walkabout frame will have shading and another won't. or there will be a stray pixel that just sort of shows up out of nowhere. not on a computer i can play it on to find an example, but im pretty sure icebird has some on her down animation. and dayang, but i didnt know if that was intentional to make him do something for the animation, given that he floats.

Dayang's is intentional. Any others are likely minor errors I forget about.

- I also fixed a tiling error that was glaringly obvious yet nobody but me noticed.

I want to inform players that Part 2's graphics won't be finished until later this year, and that I am not going to make fixing Part 1's graphics problems a high priority.

I am trying to test it now:
Did you already talk to Parthax and have the discussion with Dayang and Icebird?

Also, which door are you trying to get through? Are you in the East Wing with the dinosaur skeleton and Parthax already told you to go in to the room, ore are you still in the Gathering Hall?

EDIT: If all that's true, could you please send your save files to my e-mail so I can check it out?

yes. also, the Parthax NPC was nowhere to be seen. he did say to enter the survival hall as soon as i entered, though.

i did not bother to save because i played Motrya before, so i just went straight to, or rather, i tried to go straight through to the survival hall. give me a second to try again. maybe it was a fluke, but the bug was definitely there.

EDIT: also, if it makes a difference, i was playing on "veteran" and i failed the written test. tags might be missing somewhere in there.

so i tried again and did everything the exact same way.

this time, the Parthax NPC was present, and i could enter the survival hall, so it seems to have been a one time fluke. things like this occasionally happen in the OHRRPGCE. for example, in my game, Final Dragon Legacy, a formation of monsters appears in the sewers that are not supposed to be there. this happened twice that i've seen, and they only appear in the bottom right-hand corner of the map. i exited the game and checked the formation set, and it was definitely NOT there. also, a friend of mine tested the game, and during the battle with Nidhoggur, the player's command menu disappeared entirely.

i might chalk up these difficulties to the nightly build being unstable, but i would definitely still look into it if i were you.

Something pretty minor, but you might want to fix it:

See, I'm walking on the tree. Not under.
