On one of those disks (actually two or three of them, apparently it wouldn't all fit on just one) was a version of the OHRRPGCE from October 4th, 1998. Yeah, 4 maps and everything. This was from before I even started on The Kirby Lands, way back when I was just randomly fiddling around with the program without any real plan for a game yet. I can't believe I still have this. Is a version this old even still available anywhere?
Here's what CUSTOM.TXT says:

Be sure to Unzip CUSTOM.ZIP using the -d option. If you fail to do this,
your IMPORT directory will not be properly constructed. If you have already
unzipped without -d, just run CLEANUP.BAT

WHAT IS NEW?
* Heroswapping is done!!! (see HOWTO.TXT for details)
* Fixed bug that generated "Path not found" error when running from DOS
* Fixed levelup calculation.
You will now have the correct stats at level 99
* Fixed bug that sometimes scrambled maptiles after a dialogue box
with a background
* Supports "catapillar-walkabout" parties as used in Dragon Warrior
or Breath of Fire
* Improved Joystick Support... it still isnt quite right, but at least it
doesnt act with a mind of it's own anymore :)
* Sprites are now correctly cropped on all edges of the screen.
* "Rename Game" no longer erases the original file. It creates a new
file under a new name, but the old one stays there for backup purposes
* the "Edit NPC" option on the main menu is now a submenu under "Edit Maps"
* "Erase Map Data" now also erases door links, door loactions and NPC
locations.
* "Resize Map" is greatly improved. (see howto.txt, line 173)
* Maps are now stored more space-efficiently
* Fixed the bug that created a line on the right side of imported sprites
* You can disable the HP/MP restoration of a levelup
* Fixed the bug that allowed you to buy an item you couldnt afford when
the item requires both money and an exchange
* NPC positions are preserved when you fight a battle
* Fixed bug that prevented values greater than 500 on the Dialogue
conditionals screen

This is a TESTING distribution of the O.H.R.RPG.C.E.
It has the built in limitation of 4 maps. You cannot create more than 4
maps with this version.
Any .RPG files you create are yours to distribute as you please. You may
freely distribute GAME.EXE, OHRRPGCE.MAS, and OHRRPGCE.FNT with your .RPG
files. Do _not_ distribute CUSTOM.EXE or NOTATE.EXE
HOWTO.TXT is a tutorial that will help you get started on making a game.
I reccomend that you print it, because it is a rather long file.
I apologise for not updating HOWTO.TXT very often.
the included files, SAMPLE.RPG and NPC_TAG.RPG are part of the tutorial.
