You guys haven't even seen its story yet...

If only Nintendo itself would become so bold to tell it.

i'm totally jealous of the sprites. they look so... evil compared to Mario's usually bright, colorful, and lately papery environment. screw the contest, it's long over, but we still wanna see this game!! V
Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy... So here's some lunchmeat... Sandwich, maybe?

These graphics fit well with the tone established in the text of the SMB manual.

While I appreciate the excitement and the kind words, I am very likely not going to work on this again. I believe anything worth doing, is worth doing right, and I don't feel I have the attachment to this project, being that it is a fan-game, to do that.

Would have been epic, though. Pepsi's story is badass.

So, if you're not gonna work on it anymore...

What's the story Pepsi?

Because ShakeyAir's graphics reminded me a little bit of a sadistic Alice and Wonderland, I thought the Mushroom Kingdom in this story should've had a post-apocalyptic dark side. The tone of the story reflects that.

Here's the prologue and the opening scene. It starts off with the usual plot device in this new surreal vision of the Mushroom Kingdom, but takes a startling turn later in the sequence (which I am not posting yet) that neither Mario nor the player would expect. The crux of the story follows Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi through a war-torn Mushroom Kingdom on a mission to free it, but gives them that James Bond / CSI touch.

ShakeyAir's Mario Game

Dark Version:

(Prologue)

Black-

(Thunder and rain hammers a stone wall in the darkness)

Mario (Voice Over):
It's like a bad dream--the kind I can never wake from.

(beat)

Mario (VO):
Every night the nightmare pounds in my head.

(beat)

Mario (VO):
Thumping, thumping like a Thwomp in a concrete bedchamber.

(heavy breathing--five seconds)

Mario (VO):
It's been 25 years, and he still won't leave us alone.

Mario fades in from the darkness-

He pulls something out of his pocket.

It's a note.

Mario:
"Your princess is in another castle," it says.

Mario crumples the note and throws it over his shoulder.

Mario:
Always in another castle.

The landscape materializes out of the darkness. Mario is standing in the courtyard of a large castle. Vegetation grows along the walls. Giant mushrooms rise through the broken architecture--the structure is clearly a victim of a great war.

He gazes across the dilapidated courtyard.

Mario:
Well, I'm back, Bowser.

Tight close-up of Mario's fiery eyes.

Mario (w/cheesy N64 voice over sound effect):
It's me, Mario!

(Game Begins)

(scene 1--in castle vestibule)

The red carpet is torn. Statues of Bowser are chipped. A vortex hovers near the top of the main stairs.

Mario (VO):
I've searched several castles so far, but her trail has gone cold. It seems every path I take leads me farther away from her. And from him.

Mario glances to his left, his right, and over his shoulder. He pauses with his eyes fixed to the open exit.

Mario (VO):
Luigi's been doing surveillance around the Mushroom Kingdom, attempting to find that one clue we missed. But I'm pessimistic about the results. The cameras always turn up static.

Mario returns his attention to the front and takes a few steps forward. A ghost floats by near the stairs, looks at him a moment, sighs, and continues on into the western chamber.

Mario (VO):
He and Yoshi will be here soon. I need to scour this castle as much as possible to see if there's any chance that she's hiding here.

(beat)

Mario clutches the sky in anger.

Mario (VO):
Curse you, Bowser, for putting me through this again.

For a moment, he goes ballistic, throwing several fireballs at a nearby statue, and then hosing the flames down with his "Mario Sunshine" supersoaker. When he calms down, his shoulders heave from exhaustion.

Mario:
Let's get this over with. Please be here, Peach. I need a vacation. A real one.

So, that's the beginning of what ShakeyAir is no longer working on (unless Shizuma starts up another fan game contest).

If ShakeyAir does decide to give it another whirl, then perhaps you'll see the rest of the story. (Hint: the similarities between this and the other Mario games end when they reach the top of the castle.)
