ok. i may do a distinction between suits and powerups. suits will effect mario in battles drastically (positively and negatively) and possibly have an out-of-battle ability. (of course id implement some sort of GUI to change them quickly in the field if i make it so you have to switch fairly often, because, well... screw you Golden Sun!! haha) or maybe i wont have suits at all and things like the tanooki suit etc will just be powerups...

powerups will, well, power mario the crap up! they will last a limited number of steps and may have a field ability. (this would make them useful for puzzles, where maybe you have to work out ways to get mario from point A to point B while still having an ability which lets you do... whatever)

ideas:

STAR: makes you instantly win any battles you encounter and get any experience you would have received had you fought them. And yes, it may very well be possible to skip some lesser bosses this way, but only with some serious puzzle solving abilities. (hopefully, hahaha)
MUSHROOM: doubles, or 150%s marios stats, pending balance. Likely i'll have his pictures all change to a 'roided out' version. Maybe ill let him bust through brick walls (which of course will look just like the brick blocks you could only break as big mario in the games)
RACCOON TALE: (cuz its so much more fun than a feather) will let you fly across short gaps and give you an ability like, maybe, Dive Bomb, instead of jump, in battle. It would basically take a little longer and be much more powerful.
FIRE FLOWER: changes marios main attack to shooting a fireball that does not cost MP. (i will probably have shooting a fireball be a spell anyway) lets him shoot fireballs in the field, which could burn things or light fuses, etc etc.

an updated first map:

still oh so much to do. but most of the enemies and attacks are done with for the demo/contest release.

todo:

-finish castle tileset, make more rooms.
-tweak battle pace and enemy 'A.I.'
-balance for just mario, then for party
-figure out how exactly id like power-ups to work
-implement a puzzle that involves one
-make 3 or 4 more little cutscenes
-flavor text, objects
-maybe implement the gameboy minigame, but thats only if i get a real plotscripting itch. though i do have the general engine laid out in another .rpg file.
-sounds. music.
-1 more walkabout

right now there's about zero playtime, but i havent even worried about putting events in until lots of other stuff is out of the way. it should go quickly. i dont know how some people make games so fast! maybe i spend too much time on graphics...

Well I think the walls are too light ( or too dark), they blend in with the new floor.
And I know it's suppose to be whimsical, but whats up with those staircases, really? Can you use them?

haha. i did say for the original picture 'a lot of it is not done so please don't judge it too much.'

Looking at it again, yea i might need to lighten those walls. thats easy.

And yes, you can use the staircases.

That was how Super Mario RPG did it, and it was awesome. Stars never regenerated, either (except for one, which cost a ridiculous amount of coins), so you had to make your temporary power count. Also, I would definitely include at least one boss that can be cheap-shotted like this, with a special cutscene if you pull it off. This, too, has happened in a Mario game before.

MUSHROOM
RACCOON TALE
FIRE FLOWER

Some other powerups you may want to include:
ICE FLOWER - Much like the Fire Flower, this has great puzzle-solving potential, just like in Super Mario Galaxy. In battle, this could be another magic attack, but with the perk of "freezing" the enemy. (Inflicting Stun)
KOOPA SHELL - For the sake of speed on the overworld map. You could go with the Blue Shell from NSMB, and have it as a full-on powerup, or you could use SM64's Surfing Shell and use it as a Vehicle.
KURIBO'S SHOE - Cross spikes. Smash enemies. Simple and awesome.
HAMMER SUIT - Not sure about this one, I'd imagine a huge buff to power and defense (maybe even Fire immunity?), maybe at the cost of magic defense and speed. Flinging hammers is still awesome, though.

But certainly don't shoot for all of them, this is probably way too many powerups for one contest game.

If you put Kuribo's shoe in this game I will declare it the best OHR fan game ever.

Well, if any of my story points make it into the game, you may even see things and suits that go beyond the usual Mario fare (without disregarding the staples, of course). But that remains to be seen, so...

For my part, I'll keep you guessing...

in SMB 3, the Hammer Suit was able to kill things the Fireball couldn't, namely boos and I think even the metal shelled things.

REPOSTED FROM FANGAME THREAD:

i am sad to say, my dad is going out of town for a few days. which is a problem because all my OHR-ing must be done on his laptop. (which becomes mine at the end of summer...)

this mario game, and the ballin story pepsi ranger has developed for it, is far too awesome to not be continued. but. there will not be a demo release for this contest... this is not the worst thing ever, as i was gonna have to cut some corners to get it out in time.

it will continue, however, and i am definitely entering it in heart of the OHR.

You still workin' on this game? I find myself wondering about it here and there (and my imagination plays it out as being awesome.) I know there's several months left in the contest, and I think we're all getting a bit lax with our game projects, but don't forget to work on your game every now and then! I'm very excited about the first release.
