I WANT THAT TEA SHIRT
I can imagine it now! Folks'll probably confuse me for a heart cancer awareness dude, then realize there's a hamster where a ribbon should be, and then see the "OHR" and be like whaaaaat
And I'll say to 'em, Yeaaaah!!

Agreed.

Release Dates:
Unlike traditional contests, “Heart of the OHR” will not require a start time or an end time per se. Rather, this will adopt the “release window” technique made popular with Game-a-thon, in that any RPG released within the window is eligible (provided it meets the above standards).
Window begins July 1st and ends November 30th.

Not being familiar with the Game-a-thon contest, I was wondering how you would treat an entry posted, say, early July that was later periodically updated with new content so that it could be tested for bugs/quality/etc.
I have a lot of friends who are really excited to test the game, but I would rather steer them near Slime Salad than just pass around a flash drive or email.
Would the final version of the game be counted, or the first one (or would you place all the versions on a roulette wheel)?

Whichever version is online at the deadline. The window is designed to allow people to release their games whenever they want and still be eligible for the prize. It's also designed to make voting a little easier so that players don't have to cram a bunch of three-hour games into a single month. If you update your game a bunch of times during the window, that's fine, but give players the courtesy to know what's new or changed if there's any possibility that they'll keep downloading and playing it. One thing I discovered about players is that they'll only play the same game so many times before they no longer care about new updates. You want to be careful not to waste your chances at a great impression.
Alternative #2 is to ask someone to give you a private domain that you give out only to playtesters, so that only they know where to download it. That might feel a little like begging, though, so it's up to you to decide on that.
Place Obligatory Signature Here
Awesome, thanks for the advice.

So, I've been slowly but surely working on a game, but I'm not sure it would be eligible to enter. I think it meets the requirements you listed, but there is absolutely no way it will be close to being finished by that time.
Is an unfinished game (a demo?) still eligible as long as it has a reasonable place to cut off at?
Now, many words of warning:
I'm msw188's little brother by 10 years, and as such my game is much a little brother to his. It's also about 10 years worse, but hey I'd sure love that T-shirt!
I'll eventually figure out how to post my first demo once I get more than a couple hours worth of play-time into my game. Hope you enjoy it if you play it! If anyone has any suggestions (now about anything, or later about anything plus my game!) please tell me; I just made this account today.
You can't fix stupidity.

Ahh, excuse me for double posting, I forgot all about my bug-fix/request.
I was hoping you could update the hero list, and preferably more(maybe even all of the major ones!) on the custom editor so that you can scroll through on more detailed pages. Similar to how you can scroll through tiles WHILE setting them on the map, rather than go back and forth over and over again. An example would be with hero stats, to be able to use the ">" and "<" keys to navigate through while on the stats page so you don't have to memorize or write down stats when comparing them to an "average" character, and then go back and click so many buttons and arrow keys to get to where you want to be. Using the two keys listed above would save much time and finger strength in almost any menu, especially the attack menu and hero/enemy stat menus, in my opinion. So, if anything, those three menus would be nice to be updated in such a way, if not all of them!
sorry that was so long. I have no real clue what to do haha...

With attacks, you can scroll through most of the menus by pressing Alt+Left/Right. Extending that to everything else would be great.

I have a prize suggestion.
I think the first 3 winners of the contest should be featured in a sort of "Demonstration Pack" that can be downloaded from the Main Page to showcase the engine's features and community.
Yeah, I know Vikings already does something like this, and the game's great and all, but It's not really everybody's cup of tea, -and having three excellent games ( On top of Vikings ) as a showcase for the engine could very well bring a lot of newcomers.
I say this because, personally, none of the people I've tried bringing to the community were even slightly impressed with Vikings, aside from the graphics. It would just be nice to cover a wider audience.
What d'you guys think?

Interesting point. I think I just brought a new member in because of the engine's capabilities (he's already a game maker), and he said he LOVED Viking's graphics, but was so-so with the rest.
Total off-subject: That T-shirt thing is awesome. Good thing I'm working on a game...

All my games are the classic OHR, rpg games. I'm dedicated to this format and always have been (I like RPG's, not hate them) and will certainly have a game or two within this window.
I suppose I could say, any classic RPG's I release within this time, Could be considered contest entries as they would of never been released outside the parameters of this contest anyway. I appreciate the extra motivation however.

Oh man what is this lunacy
Since when do I draw portraits? This is-- Well, okay, I did draw them.
But it's like, no one ever wants to draw these, even though they may very well be the make-or-break factor to a character's likability. I've commissioned at least 2 artists to draw some for my characters, none of them have done a thing in years, so I have to take matters into my own hands.
