Starcraft.
Sorry guys, it's definitely starcraft.
Boring storyline and stupid characters, but amazing gameplay. After 12 years, it remains insanely popular (literally) to this day.

Godhand on PS2. It's shame I don't have my own Wii yet, cuz I wanna try No More Heroes and Mad World. Freakin' love this game. Tis a shame most people suck at it.
Neither one is anywhere close to as fun as Godhand. No More Heroes is pretty funny, but much more repetitive. Mad World is just a mess. And yes, Godhand IS the best game ever made.

Either Dragon Warrior 4 or 5. But there are too many others to list at the moment. JSH had a similar thread a while back (at least I think is was him) and I put a decently large list on there.
Yep http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=678
Posted all of my favorites there, picking one favorite is impossible.
Edit: I guess I'll repost the list here and make a couple of additions:
-Metal Gear Solid 3: Perfects both the stealth action genre and over the top James Bond style cinematics.
-X-COM UFO Defense: The best strategy game, the best PC game, still hasn't been topped, upcoming sequel looks terrible.
-Valkyria Chronicles: The closest thing to X-COM's battle system on a console. Story's awful, who cares, battles are amazingly fun.
-Zelda 2: The best Zelda, the best non-traditional platformer.
-Mario 2 (US): The best Mario.
-Super Street Fighter IV: I played the original version for over a year without anything bothering me except for a few balance issues, which have mostly been addressed here. Some characters are still too weak, otherwise it's the best fighting game.
-Soul Calibur 4: I lost a lot of fondness for this game by playing it for a year and finding all of its flaws, but it's still a lot of fun and it still has a really nice character making system. The guest characters are embarrassing.
-God Hand: The best beat em up, the funniest game.
-Bayonetta: The second best beat em up, not quite as funny, still pretty funny.
-Bubble Bobble: The best arcade game, still hasn't gotten old. Wii/Xbox remake is horrendous.
-Resident Evil 4: The best shooter, RE5 was a massive let down. I should give RE5 another shot, but nothing about it caught my attention. Everything about RE4 did.
-Shadow of the Colossus: I don't know how I skipped this the first time I made this list. It's all boss fights. They are the best boss fights
-Silent Hill 2: The best horror game atmospherically.
-Silent Hill: Shattered Memories: The best horror game thematically and story-wise.
-Silent Hill: The best horror game puzzle-wise.
-Killer 7: Still nuts, still great, don't care that the puzzles are trashy.
-Super Punch-Out: I haven't played the Wii sequel yet, but this is still one of my favorite Nintendo games.
-Soul Calibur: Aged very well, HD port on 360 looks wonderful but doesn't have online play, inexcusable.
-Demon's Souls: The best action/adventure game.
-Metal Gear Solid 2: Doesn't control as well as MGS3, screws with the player better than any other game.
-Contra 4: Holy hell did these guys get this game right, this does everything a good sequel should do. Consequently, Contra Rebirth did almost none of the things a good sequel should do.
-Soul Blazer: The best Zelda-style adventure game.
-Kirby's Adventure: Kirby's great, and this is his best game. Super Star is a very close second.
-Kirby Super Star: See above.
-River City Ransom: The best co-op after Bubble Bobble.
-Kid Icarus: There's no other platformer like this. Extremely difficult, but nothing in this game is cheap. TAKE YOUR TIME.
-Space Invaders: I will play this at any place that has it. SI: Revolutions and SI: Extreme are both also very good.
-Mario Kart DS: The best Mario Kart, even if online play is broken.
-Gradius 3: The best side-scrolling shooter.
-Act Raiser: Music rules, town building rules, combat rules, sequel blows.
-Star Tropics: The second best Zelda-style game.
-Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow: The only Castlevania that holds my attention enough to still replay.
-Mega Man 2: The best bosses, Wily Castle is kind of terrible. MM9 has the best Wily Castle.
-Contra: I've come very close to finishing it without dying on the NES. Arcade version is much harder, and limits you to three continues. Beating that in an arcade made me a man.
-Suikoden 5: The best traditional RPG, in spite of terrible graphics and a very slow start.
-Suikoden 2: The second best.
Super Walrus Land: Mouth Words Edition
My favorite RPG is Lufia II, but my favorite game is Super Metroid. I've been playing it for over fifteen years and I still don't play it the same way twice. It has an incredible atmosphere and perfectly fitting music. I've never gotten tired of it and don't expect to anytime soon.
Edit: And a bigger list is in the link Surlaw posted above.

Actually, boring story? i love the story.
the xel'naga creates 2 whole other races, one pure in essence, and one pure in form, so that after the races evolve and develop, the one will be consumed by the other, causing a rebirth of the xel'naga. thats a flippin crazy mythos. haha
then you have the terran, who are basically all the criminals exiled from earth. like a giant intergalactic australia, haha.
although its true that i could care less about the politics they go into.
Beating Contra WITHOUT DYING? That, my friend, would be quite impressive.
Kirby's Adventure was such a fun game, everything about it. Was Super Star really that good? Was it in the same vein (ie LOTS of powers, hidden stuff to find in lots of the stages, mostly easy and/or cute but still with some small challenges here and there...)?
And I've said it a lot on Surlaw's forums, but I feel the need to make it clear again:
Zelda 2 and Mario 2 are great, GREAT games and people who don't like them nearly as much as the 'traditional' entries in the series should be illegal.
I am Srime

Kirby Super Star is 250% better than Kirby's Adventure. Yes, it has all that stuff. And each power has a MOVESET, not just one attack. KSS is actually the game Super Smash Bros was based on. (Pretty much controls the same way when you have powers)

It's all about taking it slow (and using Spread at all times). Rushing always kills you.

Super Star is a series of short games, and completing them unlocks one larger, spectacular game. I love the biggest game in it (Great Cave Escape or whatever it is), but I'm not an enormous fan of the games that come before it. They're GOOD, but they're mostly typical Kirby.
