Here's my comments on the entries. (I assume this is OK? Most of them already have discussion threads.)

Bell of Chaos by James Paige
Very technically impressive, very visually impressive. Very difficult without abusing saves. I found the bell difficult to control, especially to use as a weapon without throwing it.

Carson and the Quest for Color by Puzzle
I'm not sure what to make of this game. It seems like it was made for a school project, since educational science stuff is shoehorned into the game. The rest is mazes.

Crystal Chasers by Moogle1
This is an excellent game and you should all play it and vote for it.

Dragon Bustier by Shizuma
This game, of all the entries, is truest to its roots. The graphics are also really excellent. The design is slightly sadistic, though.

Horse Game by Surlaw
This is not a joke game. It's ultimately a puzzle game with a few really great moments highlighted by brilliant voice acting throughout.

Edit: finished Dragon Bustier
Mega Tact v1.1

Wizard Blocks

#1 Crystal Chasers
I'll be honest, I didn't care too much for the entries in this contest. I think this was the best of them, mainly because I love FF3 and this was basically a giant homage to it. The jumping puzzles are ATROCIOUS because the animation takes so much time, but other than that I enjoyed the battles and playing with the available jobs. Effective graphics too.
3.5/5

#2 Bell of Chaos
This isn't really a very good game... the walking and jumping physics are terrible, and create a ton of "fake difficulty" that distracts from what is really creative. Those bell swinging physics boggle my mind. The graphics are insanely awesome. I'm still giving CC the nod because it's actually playable.
3/5

#3 Horse Game
Very good joke entry. If all of the entries were joke games, this one probably would have won. Love the voice-overs, love the concept. I didn't think the puzzles were interesting at all, but I suppose that wasn't the point.
3/5

#4 Dragon Bustier
I just didn't have the patience to grind up in this game. Dragon Quest 1-3 or Spellshard fans will probably dig it a lot, though. The graphics are very good. I think this game's pretty effective at what it was trying to do, although I'm not in to it myself.
very opinionated 2/5

#5 Carson and the Quest for Color
Is this Puzzle's first game? It definitely feels like a classic "first game." There are lots of mistakes that an experienced editor would probably have caught. The mazes are very bland and boring to get through. The concept isn't especially terrible, but execution is lacking.

I must have not played the same game as you.

I thought Bell of Chaos was awesome. Yes, it takes a bit to get used to but the bell can be manipulated fairly easy once you get the hang of it. It reminds me a lot of old school NES sidescrolling platformers that could be quite difficult. Honestly though, the fact that you can save at any time (unlike many of the old school games before) makes the difficulty of the game much more tolerable.

The graphics are also stunning.

Great job, James! I really, really hope to see more of this one. Definitely my favorite so far (although I still have two or so left to play).

No, that doesn't make up for how fast the character moves in proportion to keystrokes. It's, frankly, bad execution. I have had this problem with every OHR sidescroller I've played except perhaps Trailblazers, which I haven't played in years to confirm. I don't blame anyone; platformer physics are hard to code, but I'm also not giving brownie points to a game with bad physics because it is a sidescroller made on the OHR.

It isn't the bell. The bell is fine; it's supposed to be awkward. It's the moving and jumping that are completely out of whack.

I liked all the games in their own ways, It wasn't the contest we had 2 years ago that's for sure; but still some quality stuff, all very completish too!

JSH; I find it's strange that some people who don't like DQ1-3 would even bother with the OHR. No, this doesn't mean people should love my game or anything, just a thought. Grin

Horse Game was my favorite, Not so retro but completely awesome... I think Surlaw will have a real classic with a bunch more stages. All of us can learn from this game design.

Finally, I'm really happy to see James drawing different things, I knew of the depth of his artwork from reading his blog and really hoped he'd show off he could draw more than hamsters one day. I'd love to see yet more.

I haven't played James' game yet, but this is exactly my complaint with Trailblazers itself.

Sorry, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Maybe I haven't played enough OHR sidescrollers to tell the difference, but I really didn't see a problem with movement except for a couple of particular areas.

Hey, that would make a nifty HS feature sometime, reviewing all the OHR sidescrolling platformers. Maybe I'll do that in the near future and can maybe see what the fuss is about then.

It could use a new installment covering what's been released since, but it's been done.

Considering how unpopular the DQ series is in America, that isn't strange at all.
