Calling All OHR Game Developers AND Composers!

Hey, all! I wanted to throw an idea out there to all of you who might be interested. Let me just say now, I am posting this in game discussion because it's SPECIFICALLY about collaboration and for that reason I feel it fits best here and it may easily be overlooked in general discussion.

I really love all the work that comes out of game competitions and topics like the 'Show Off Your Battle Sprites' or 'Hype Up Your Game' threads.

This got me to thinking... This is great for those of us who are good at graphics or story-telling to show off our work. But what about musicians who would like to promote their stuff in the community? Maybe do some more collaboration with developers?

Anyway, here is my idea... A CONTEST! Composers in the community pick a character or an event in an OHR game that they particularly like, then write a theme based around that character or event and post it (on CP or wherever and just a link here). Then the community can vote on which ones they like the best based the quality of music and whether or not it fits that character or event.

Anyway, let me know what yall think. I think this would be a lot of fun and good for OHR developers and composers alike.

If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to head it up and could iron out the details and rules swiftly.

I dig it. I think this is a great idea.

Im interested. Alittle confused though, are we remixing songs from a games cutscene?

I like the idea so far, maybe you should expand apon it. I think it would be neat if we did some kinda remix circle where we all did a song from each others games and everyone gives and receives 1 remix.

Sorry I should have been more specific.

I intended for each musician to write a NEW piece for the character they choose. The reason being is that this is to show the individual skill of each composer, their originality and how well they can interpret the nature of that character/event.

However, I think the remix cycle would be a good idea too. If this one goes over well with the community, would you mind if I use that idea for a second music competition?

Here's what I have so far:
1) 1 (one) original composition per entrant (must specify OHR game and the character/scene for which it is intended)
2) MIDI format only (to level the playing field for those without expansive sample libraries, etc.)
3) Any style or instrumentation is acceptable. Just make sure it fits the mood.

So the Game Developers will be here to feed inspiration and quirks to Composers in order to churn out an interesting song?

Thanks. And yeah, that's the general idea. Hopefully the developers will also be here to judge whether or not the music written for their characters/events (and others') fit the mood intended in the game.

I think this is a great idea.

Although I don't like the midi-only limitation either. Blue Train does some good stuff with his gameboy :)

Also I am really hoping that somebody will try something with a tracker format ;)

Thanks, James. I've had a bit more time to think about this and I think I may have it more together now.

First off, let's drop the MIDI only limitation. I think everyone is right about it being limiting for those who compose by another means and everyone should have a chance to do their best!

Secondly, to help composers, what if developers here would suggest some of their characters/events for which they would LIKE to hear some fresh music written? That way developers can be a bit more involved in this process!

And thirdly, what would yall say to maybe a one or two week time frame for the composers to complete their works? Obviously we wouldn't be starting RIGHT NOW, but what do yall think a good time limit would be?

I'm definitely down for doing some composing, and I think 1 or 2 weeks is a good time frame (maybe even just 1 would be good).

I agree. I don't think it should take more than one week either. How long do yall think we should give developers to get their suggestions/requests in before composers select for what they are going to write? Should that be a few days or a week long? Feel free to drop as many opinions as yall want on this.

It's times like this that I wish I had made a single memorable character that had more than a one-shot of game content (Or anything more than a tech-demo).

If anyone wants to write a song for an atom that is a glutton for making more bonds than physically possible or anything else I've dumped on the internet, I will absolute not oppose.
