A game in a week (Do You Want to be a Hero?)

...At least, that was the idea. It's been eight days and I could've released it yesterday, but I really wanted to include the last area. It ties the rest of the game together and serves as a nice segue into the future content.

But here's the problem. The game is very vehicle-heavy, and in testing the game, I unsurfaced scads of vehicle bugs. Among them:
- You can't move after you disembark randomly. Occurs in area 4, and appears to happen most often when you disembark onto a tile with three walls. Hard to reproduce.
- The game hangs if you try to enter a ship on the topmost row of tiles from the tile beneath.
- If you instead enter from the tile above (on wraparound maps), everything is fine... unless you have two or more party members. In that case, the leader will step onto the ship and the other two will float north all the way around the world until they reach the ship. *Then* you can move.

These last two bugs are sort of gamebreaking on that last area. I'm going to work around them by shifting the entire map down one row, but when you play the game, if you play the game, keep in mind that the random hangs you get when dealing with vehicles are engine bugs, and consider this post my official plea to James to fix them. Smile

Should be online in a few hours. Still have to *test* the last area, which is probably way too hard.

It's kinda funny you post this, I recently read a tutorial on TIGsource about making a game in a week. Did you see it too?

Okay, I'm going to have to hold off on the release. I upgraded to the latest nightly and vehicles actually don't work at all. Bleargh.

But I will put up a promotional screenshot!



Fix the vehicle bugs and this game could be yours!

Okay, the game is ready to go. Vehicles are still messed up -- in particular, I have trouble boarding boats sometimes. Use F11 if you need to.

I am looking for feedback! Let me know which heroes you liked best, and which didn't pull their weight. Also let me know if you absolutely could not beat the World 5 boss.

Does F11 actually fix the problem? If so that narrows down where the problem could be. And you arre you talking about bug 770 or bug 771?

No, but F11 circumvents it. You'll just have to pretend you're in a boat.

It's the bug I alluded to in, um, not 771 or 772. You can't board vehicles under unknown circumstances. For example, skip to world 5 and check out the boat to the right of the starting position. You can't board it from the top or the left, but you can board it from the bottom or the right. You can then use it and leave normally. 770 is where I mentioned it.

This is really neat! V

'Power' was pretty much my favorite spell on the ending maps (Bruce is a beast).
Elf-girl was neat on the second chapter, but pretty much useless everywhere else (She missed too much and died too often to get any experience Gonk )

And on the second to last (playable) map, there was a chest that gave an endless amount of 'Grail's.

Great fun, pity the vehicles were just about completely broken.

I loved Ansa. She's the hardest to keep alive, though.

I'm about to upload a bugfix release:
- Effect spells that miss no longer apply their effects
- Grails now make dead heroes reappear instantly
- The Grail chest in world 5 now gives out only a single grail

If you already downloaded, you probably don't need to re-download. These bugs are pretty minor.

James has fixed all the pesky vehicle bugs! Three cheers for James!

In honor of his bugfixiness, I have uploaded a new version of the game. Changes include:
- World 6 is now playable! Six new enemies, and only one is a palette swap. Warning: you will die a lot.
- Enemies now have lifebars, hooray! Hopefully this helps you plan your battle strategy a little better.
- Ansa lost T.Storm and gained Guard Up. (The boss of world 6 was nearly impossible for her without it.) Since T.Storm never actually appeared in the magic menu previously, this is 100% win for her.
- Duwain's spells also got shuffled a little. I forget what I did with him, but all his changes were really late in his spell list, so he still plays the same.
- You've probably never unlocked them, but Vampire2 and Explode have been buffed a little lot.
- The vehicles work! Hooray for James!
