*Stewie continues talking to himself*

The plot of Astroman! Sure it's not very original, as Astroman himself says "The classic schemes are so refreshing..." Production is slow seeing as how every room I come up with involves about sixteen new tilesets. But just to prove it has a set plan, here ya go.

Quote:
Plot Synopsis:

A mysterious force known simply as “The Unknown” is gathering rings of old power. Its up to Astroman to gather them before it does.

Chapter 1, a child loses her mother’s ring. And believes it was brought to the Critter Cing. Astroman goes and gets it, a rather mundane task...

Chapter 2, on his way back to the apartment, Astro witnesses the Brigand Gang knocking over a jewelry store, the only thing stolen being a ruby ring. Astro chases them to their hideout in an abandoned pancake house. Fortunately, the Brigand King, Elrod Purvis, is too busy digging under their headquarters to notice.

Chapter 3, mysterious people begin popping up, preaching about the “favorite child of Eris, the Unknown.” While Astroman immediately suspects Garth Vader’s cultsman, Superfrench arrives, her training at the Magical Mystery Tour interrupted by a powerful monster wielding a glowing Amethyst ring. Curious.

Chapter 4, after stopping the monster of the week, and perusing the self named prophets, another jewelry store is robbed in another town, this time by a group of clowns. Astroman’s next stop, Booze-o’s circus. And there’s rumor of an exceptionably shiny Emerald ring involved...

Chapter 5, having collected four of the powerful rings, Astroman is approached by the Cult of the Unknown, seeking to add “his collection to theirs.” He’s essentially invited to the heart of the beast, free to grab the Onyx ring and run. It can’t be that easy, can it? Spoiler: no it can’t.

Chapter 6, The Unknown has revealed himself, and only the Diamond, most powerful ring of them all, remains. It’s a race through the rubble of the newly-felled Lando Field to find it. Astroman finds it quickly enough, but the Cult has a secret weapon up their sleeves. So close, but the final ring gets taken home to Unknown.

Chapter 7, Quick! After that ring! There’s no telling what dangers Unknown can create with it. Bt inside his fortress, he’s summoned the most dangerous foes you’ve faced, and he is using his powers to make them even deadlier. This is the final countdown. Astroman, GO!

Major Side Quests:

The Moch-Aid Challenge! The Moch-Aid Headquarters has opened a contest. Whomever can defeat all of their chosen champions wins a free lifetime supply of Moch-Aid! Prepare to fight the likes of the Underkegger, Diet-Generation X, Kane-a-kola, and finally the Moch-Aid man himself! (Note, repeatable for all three classes of Moch-Aid)

Fan fiction in motion! Samantha Cing has secretly built a fan game around Astroman’s exploits, and Astro finds it. Curiosity leads to conflict, as Astro plays it without her consent, or knowledge, really. Does he have the skill to bring himself, Happyman, and The Hippie to soundly defeat the notorious... Candyman?

The Dreamworks. Every Hero has an origin story, and late in the game you have the opportunity to explore them. Events both mechanical, mystical and mundane take you into the memories of your champions, reminding them why they do what they do, and unlocking their true potential. Each wins their ultimate weapon, and renews their vigor.

The Warworld. A strange portal to another realm has been ripped open by the Unknown’s flagrant use of his powers. On the other side, a war rages on, with strange technological monstrosities fighting a raging horde of sub-humans. Astroman has no stake in this battle, other than keeping it from spilling over to his. You must choose a side, and fight for peace. Do not worry about playing the good guy...

The Temple of the Creator. A massive feast is being held in an old temple. Many people are interested, but few wish to go, since the place is crawling with otherworldly creatures taking part. There will be lots of eating, lots of drinking, lots of joking, and lots and lots of fighting. And should Astroman and friends succeed, the blessing of the Creator himself will be with them.

There are many minor quests available as well. It is up to the player to find them, and complete them. They stem from simple, to extravagant, and rewards range from unique trinkets to new heros.

Prophet: The time of chaos is not coming, brothers! Indeed, it has always been! ... Things WILL fall apart! The Center WILL NOT hold! ... All things are made to be broken, and all things are broken to be remade! ... From Creativity comes Chaos, from Chaos, creativity! .... Hail, the favorite son of Eris! Hail the Unknown! ... The Unknown will rise, and with him, change! ... Change is the only constant! Chaos, the only order! Discord, the only music! ... The bonds of Fenrir are the bonds of man! And the Unknown will tear them apart! ....

Someone's listening, I'm sure.

*Quietly directs you to my exposition article, specifically the bit where you can use a cliche'd plot to your advantage by rushing through it to get to the meaty parts faster*

If you want, I'll look at your plot in more detail later tonight, but I don't have time for big long posts right now Angel.

Actually, I read the article, and I had quite a few ideas come up by it. Most prominently the knowledge characters already know, but are clueing the player into. And forgive me if I'm mixing my sources here, I just got home from work.

With the exception of an opening monologue from Astroman, the actual origins of the heroes are barely touched upon, and any pre-existing relationships with other major characters and bosses remaining a mystery until later on in the game. Such as the first boss, Critter Cing, being portrayed as a random loony in the sewers, only to have his sister talk about him in very admiring tones later on.

It also helped me make the final decision for the Ultimate Weapons Quest. The player really knows scarce little about the character's origins, letting them form their own opinions based on their actions and manner of speaking. Then as a side quest, the character relives their origin, thus giving the player a deeper, more intimate understanding of a hero they're all ready familiar with, as opposed to knowing absolutely everything from the get go.

I want the dialogue to sound very natural, very day-to-day, no matter how silly and absurd it gets. Oh and the rings? They're basically your standard Mario-esque, "you-collect-stars-but-really-who-gives-a-crap" plot device.

Update time, visually this time! Y'know, since I haven't posted any visual aids in a while. Here's proof that yes, it did happen...

This is Under Jimbo's Pancake Breakfast. Elrod "Brigand King" Purvis is digging underneath for some reason. It's aimless wandering caverns lay out a sort of maze for the player to explore. as it's more or less level 2, its nothing extravagant, and it's possible you could make it through the first time on dumb luck. I'll be putting bonuses in the dead ends tho, so its all worth exploring.

This is the end of the "maze." The cheese is just a placeholder signaling where the boss would normally be. I used that as a goal for my playtesters, even replaced Astroman's Walkabout sprite with that of a rat.. may just make it as a mini quest :P

The Apartment of Solitude, complete with ladder down to Samantha's lab. the ladder's there because the basement doesn't have a bathroom or kitchen, or access through the main hallway. Convenience.

This is a pic of the Basement. It's unfinished at the moment, but when it's done, it'll be a place to get everyone up to speed, buy and create items, weapons and armor, read up info on all your favorite characters and even...

You could say that, yes... This big purple do-dad has the ability to bring any character up to Astroman's level.. or down if you screw it up. Since only the four active party members gain any experience, this device is a nice way to bring favorite-but-underused characters up to par for when you need them. It uses a special kind of item for fuel tho, and it'll be really expensive to buy, and pretty damn hard to find for free...

so there you have it, visual evidence that I am, in fact, hard at work![/img]

man I don't post in this enough...

I've taken to filling the world with life now. I've been revisiting stuff I've already done and refining it, such as the Sewers now having much more and varied "litter" all over it, more characters and items, shuffling some equipment around, ect. I am one death script away from finally calling the first chapter "done," and its pretty much what I SHOULD have released back in that demo so long ago.

the maps and enemy graphics for the second dungeon are now done, save for the boss himself. The infrastructure for Hangtown is more or less done, and I'm filling it in with flavor, quests et al.

One thing I want to point out tho, I've come across a couple problems in the latest nightly build (November 16). One, the cursor no longer disappears in full screen mode, but this is hardly a problem. The BIG one is that specialty characters in the Font no longer work. Characters already in use show up still, but typing in new ones (ex. Alt + 4) only produces a space. I looked in the font editor, and it doesn't even have instructions on how to place them.

I just fixed this one. If you could test it out in the nightly build, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for reporting it!
