I'm rather torn on this. Part of me wants to pretend I've never released an anything before, and part of me is intrigued by the challenge of making "The Wizard, the Thief, and the Lich" a game actually worth a damn, and maybe restoring some of my badly damaged slime cred while I'm at it.

Eh....what the hell. But if I'm not happy in two months, no amount of cajoling will get me to release it. Probably.

For one thing, I'll probably have to change the name. It's incredibly clunky.

Then I need

1.) Graphics
2.) Story
3.) Gameplay
4.) More than 3 maps.
5.) Music
6.) Plotscripting

So...easy. I guess. Heh. At least "most improved" is within my grasp; I can't do much worse.

So, I'm thinking about remaking/completing my very first game, Wendel's Quest for the Sacred Stones. Since it did exist as a demo in the past (although it seems that nobody that is around these days downloaded from back then), would it be okay if I did that?

Please let me know so that I may begin planning.

Okay! You are added.

i'm entering with, hell, we'll just call it 'Heroes and Monsters' for now. no one in the community has seen anything from it, so i can't necessarily prove anything, but here's a screen shot to at least show it's existence.

I didn't realize I had to pre-register for this. I'd like to sign up with "spoonweaver" and perhaps "Slimes". Is there any kind of penalty for late sign-ups if I want to submit a different game?

No penalty for late entry. If you want to submit something else too later, just say so here.

You can do it!
Added.

A toast to wishfulness!
Added.

I have edited the first post and added a few clarifications based on questions asked here. See especially the "ENTERING" section, and clarifications about "Most Improved" voting.

Also, I am thinking that due to the large number of submissions, we might need to extend the judging period a bit. We shall see.

James, you read my mind about this contest. I thought about running something similiar in the past, but I never got further than talking about it. However, I don't think there's a better person in the world who could have hosted this contest other than yourself. You have the respect of the community which will inspire contestants to enter and work hard, and you are offering a prize, which many of us couldn't have done.

I'd like to enter. I'm not sure if I will finish in time (given college sometimes like to give me surprise homework and other challenges), but I sure as well will give it a shot. The game? Bahamut Breath. Yes, that old, ancient project. It's time I've got the burden of that game off of my shoulders once and for all -- even if it is my "newb" project that I worked on when I was in middle school.

I'd post a link to the old version of it, but CP is currently down. Everyone should know it exists though either because of my youtube videos of its gameplay or by playing it back in the day. I'll try to remember to come back later and post a link to it in any case.

tl;dr: Count me in for this one. Let's see where it goes!

I'll have to work extra hard to beat Momoka and Chenzi in the "most improved" category. Those games were awful, but I've no doubt that Bahamut Breath can become something worthwhile out with a bit of elbow grease.

With Okedoke, Village People, and Wandering Hamster here, I don't stand much of a chance at "best game", but I'm going to try my hardest anyway.

I'll continue to abide by the 8-bit Contest rules. Heck, my portraits obey the spirit of the contest by using only three colors.

I kind of want to be offended by this, but I just can't :/

I feel compelled to point out at this point in the thread that "Most Improved" is not a measure of how bad your game used to suck.

I approve of this contest. Though technically the only games I've started that I could finish would be Stop or The Crystal Globe. I guess technically I had Shadowiii vs Iowa DS and a Pitch Black SE in progress, but...

I won't be entering just yet, but I'm kinda interested in making a Pitch Black SE, so maybe I'll talk to Mr. B and see what I can do. Do remakes/improvements of that sort count?

Wow, folks sure are quick to downvote tech demos. I think my average game rating right now is 1 1/3 stars. Mad

But yeah, I'll leave that there until voting is over.

Exactly. It's a measure of how good it has become compared to how good it used to be. For games that are already awesome (Vikings of Midgard, Wandering Hamster), they may become even more awesome but not have a significant increase in relative quality, where an awful game might go up to a mediocre or even above-average game, a massive increase in relative quality. A game that has gone from zero to three stars is "more improved" than one that has gone from four to five.

That being said, an awful game can receive lots of work and continue to be awful if its author doesn't really work at making it better. A game that goes from 50kb and 1 star to 100kb and 1 star hasn't improved, it's just put on weight.

That's true, but going from 4 stars to 5 is still much more of an improvement than going from 1 to 3.

I will finish the original, non-joke game version of Bandit Revolver.

I don't think I have the original file anymore, so I may have to make a new demo from scratch and try to release it some time before the finished game.
