Hey guys I'm excited about Platinum so I started playing Pearl again. Let's talk about Pokemon.
Working on a Gengar,
Modest nature, 252 SpA/252 Spe/4 HP
- Hypnosis
- Thunderbolt
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
and a Zangoose,
Adamant nature, 252 Atk/252 Spe/4HP
- X-Scissor
- Close Combat
- Slash
- Swords Dance
I'm not really keen on Slash but I can't figure out what else to throw on there.
I also have a Voltorb and Tangela that I plan to train, but I can't remember the movesets/EV Spreads i picked out for them right now and Smogon is blocked at work, so I can't check.

Here's the EV spread and the first listed moveset for each
Electrode
Tangrowth
Dunno if that's the sets you were using, but I'm not gonna copy 'em all. Hope the spreads render okay, because I'm definitely not going to screw with their formatting.
What about Return instead of Slash? Or Quick Attack / Shadow Claw / Fire Punch? I guess I just don't see the point of Slash there.
Mega Tact v1.1
Super Penguin Chef
Wizard Blocks
Electrode

The Rain Dancing Electrode was dead on the one I'm doing (I don't know why I couldn't remember such a simple assortment of moves). Not sure about the Tangrowth one, it was Impish is all I remember. I'll look it up when I get home.
I agree that Slash doesn't need to be there. Return might be better, and Shadow Claw would add effectiveness against ghosts... hmm. Fire Punch IIRC would need to be bred in, and I've already got 3 boxes of Zangooses (Zangeese?)
EDIT: Updated OP with charts I made while bored (for the sake of full disclosure, these were based on charts from elsewhere online, so I only take credit for my excel skills)

I got excited about having wifi last month and finished my national dex.
I haven' done much in the Battle Tower. Last time I went I had no trouble until I got to Palmer and his goddamn Milotic. It's a little annoying to EV train any of the guys I'd want to, since I'd been training them throughout the game and never kept track.

I have an EVd Pupitar named MURDERFACE and an EVd Charizard named BLARGG, both geared to physical atk and using dragon dance. I've since replaced them (hence why Murderface is still a pupitar) and if you want themx you're welcome to them.
If you want to really take on the battle tower, Breloom is highly reccomended with the following moveset:
Spore
Focus Punch
Leech Seed
Seed Bomb
Spore is a 100 accuracy sleep move and Focus Punch REQUIRES that you not get hit while it sets up, so they go hand-in-hand. Leech Seed is good for stalling and generally just wrecking dudes, and seed bomb's there as a reliable attack.
If Breloom has the Poison Heal ability, put a Toxic Orb on him and watch as he becomes "Badly Poisoned", which means he will start at RECOVERING 1/16th of his health per turn and move up to 15/16ths recovery per turn.
Breloom is very good for taking care of Milotic with Leech Seed (possibly to counterract Aqua Ring) and Seed Bomb.
I just might have an Adamant Shroomish for you, but I'd have to check.

I like how you guys seem to pick pokemon you like over pokemon that are...well, good. I always thought making some of the pokemon hands down better then others was kinda dumb. So I never pick the good ones. I always went with either cubone, alakazam, or rattata. Haven't played pokemon for a while, maybe I will when this new one comes out, or is it just the off shoot of the last?
Oh and check out this cubone picture i found:

But Alakazam is one of the best Pokémon in the series. (And always has been)

I could be wrong but I think Mogri's referring to the metagame, which is a fancy way of saying 'the stuff you can do after the main quest' which amounts to training Pokemon and battling with people.
Generally the formats are broken up by tier.
Tiers are:
Uber: Extremely powerful legendaries, and also Wobuffett and Garchomp.
OU - Overused. Generally thought of as 'The Best'.
BL - Borderline. As powerful as OU but not as often used.
UU - Underused. Considered not really all that great for competitive play.
The game formats break down like this:
Standard Play is using OU and BL Pokemon, but no Ubers.
Uber play uses Ubers and some OU guys who are good against them (examples of OU Pokes who are viable in Uber play are Tyranitar and Metagross). Uber is the ONLY format in which most Legendaries are allowed.
UU Play is exactly what it sounds like.
EDIT: I think this is the Tangrowth set I was going for:
I would train it soon but I need to grind for money for awhile. I ran out of vitamins

Sane people only use simulators to play online (or hack with Pokesav). Making a viable competitive team on the cart is taxing to say the least--it can take months.

Are you including breeding for IVs? Because yeah, then it would take a while, but EV training by itself isn't so bad if you have Pokerus and the Power items on your side.
The only thing that keeps me from battling people online is the cumbersome WiFi interface. I have the patience to EV train but not to breed for IVs, so I guess if I had to be any kind of real competitive environment at all, I'd use Pokesav or just play on Shoddy.
