Pokémon Megathread - Don't Matter If You're Black Or White

Hey man, that's cool. I'm sure when you're caught up and we're kinda sick of it, it'll be another reason to pick it back up for the 2 vs. 2 battle.

I'm new to this whole "wi-fi on my portables" thing, but I really need my stupid Katabra to evolve so he'll have a chance against the Elite 4...
Would someone mind trading me him and then trading him back? I don't know how to do it just yet (I'll read up on the instructions), but that would be greatly appreciated.

Screenshot on the right is Pokémon Ranger: Tracks of Light, the most recent Pokémon spinoff game.

Screenshot on the left is Pokémon Black/White, next game in the main series. I know it'll probably improve a bit by the time the game is actually done, and it'll probably look better "in action" than it does in still screenshots, but... how can anyone think that doesn't look awful? It looks like a first-wave N64 game, or worse... and even though the DS and 3D don't mix, they should still be able to do better than that (compare Super Mario 64 DS to the original. Mario's nose is round now and Bowser no longer looks like some guy in a giant-headed Bowser mascot suit.)

Nintendo/Game Freak's philosophy for making the graphics of the main-series games must be something along the lines of "hey, this game is going to sell bajillions of dollars worth of copies anyway, we don't have to make decent graphics... even though we can." And then the spinoffs like Ranger and Mystery Dungeon get graphics that actually look like someone put some effort into making them.

I mean, I don't hate the spinoff games (at least not the ones that are actually decent... not talking about crap like Hey You, Pikachu! here)... some of them are actually pretty good. And I know Black/White will probably still be great games even though they'll look horrible everywhere except the battle scenes. But why do the spin-offs get such amazing graphics while the main-series games get crap? Even the battle sprites, usually the best part of the main series, have been slipping lately... look at some of the new sprites from Platinum and HG/SS for a good example. Bad/nonexistant shading, weird disproportionate body parts, and so on.

I have a suspicion that the game just looks really bad in screenshots. It reminds me of the Dragon Quest remakes on the DS.

Yeah, I figure that part of the horribleness is probably just the "doesn't lend itself well to screenshots"-ness that 3D games tend to have, especially on the DS. I haven't seen any of the Dragon Quest remakes , but Diamond/Pearl were the same way: still screenshots always looked like crap, but in-game it doesn't seem nearly as bad.

It still kinda bothers me that they keep using this weird bad-looking 3D even though they have the ability to do something better, though.

The Pokemon Anime is very popular. It's obviously a sort of business decision to pick up a spriting style that imitates the look of cartoons (low contrast cel shading, non-black outlines to convey the look of thin lines).

They're basically appealing to people that like seeing stuff look like a cartoon rather than the us SNES pixel elitists.

That aside, I think I can help you with Probopass, Azelf, Giratina, and Cresselia. I'll need to check my Diamond game later tonight, I'll edit this message when I'm sure.

As an addendum: I have the items and Clamperls needed for Huntail/Gorebyss; I just haven't had any way to trade.
