I haven't named it yet, but it's very unlikely to be questicle 2.

Basically, this game is an attempt at a Metroid-vania mixed with a Rogue-like.
I'm using questicle graphics for now. They're meant to be placeholders for now, but they're growing on me so I might end up keeping them.

they work, though there's room for improvement. At least different directions looking, but it's your game.

Oh.. actually, yea he does turn and stuff ( he doesn't animate though )
It just so happened that both screenshots have him facing the same way.

I'm working on a little game for my boyfriend's birthday in a few weeks! I've only been working for a couple of weeks so far already, and I had just started with the OHR and game-making in general when I began this, so... It shows!

I'm still just adding stuff all willy-nilly to it. I hope to have at least something fun and playable for him by his birthday! It's made with just his playing it in mind, and features a lot of references to things he likes, so it might not be a very decent play for anyone else. The main Party consists of him, me, and optionally his pet dog and guest appearances of characters from series he likes. Hurr

Everything's made by me, frustratingly coded with trial and error! The music, though, is ripped from various other games that he enjoys. I did that because I thought it'd be a nice surprise and I have no skill in making music files myself...

The main premise is suddenly his neighborhood turns all Silent Hill-esque, complete with iconic monster dogs. From there on it's just references to series we've watched or played together, with a few things like anime characters and references we find funny. Ahaaah.

Some little elements include being able to talk to Walter White from Breaking Bad, when he'll ask you to go down the street and tell his meth-cooking partner to hurry up on buying those snacks. XD

Also, if you decide to wait at the bus stop, a catbus comes by (anyone know of My Neighbour Totoro?) and a character hops off and gives you some neat hints~. C:

It's of course mostly relevant to who it's being made for, but I wanted to share since it's my first time creating and maybe after I'd like to make something else!

That art is actually pretty nifty! There are a few places that could use improvement, but overall, it's pretty great!

Haha, thanks! Yeah, spriting in particular is something I've never really done before, so a lot of areas, particularly the ones I made first, are very... odd on the eyes. Perspective is particularly an issue, I think, and I'm not good at conveying anything with few pixels. There's a lot of things that just look like masses of pixels, really! If I can't fix some things up later, I might have to stand over my boyfriends shoulder while he plays and explain what a few jumbles were supposed to be... XD

Thank you!

@emmychu: Your graphics look amazing!
Well done.
A+

I know the game's a personal thing and all, but any chance of a release?

Wow, everything looks great. You definitely should release this when it's done. Great job on your first game, usually all of our first released games looked like garbage while we were learning.

Very nice, Emmychu! I like the art style. What tool do you use to draw the portraits and the full-screen backdrops?

Thanks everyone! I'd love to share it when it's "done", since I put so much effort into learning some things for it! Unless my boyfriend objects, I'm sure I'll put it up. And after I'd like to make some more stuff, which might turn out a little more consistent, too!

Initially I used the internal editor, and a few tilesets in there are still made that way. But eventually I started using an external program to make even the walkabouts, and so some of the newer ones look a little nicer I think.

I use a program called Paint Tool SAI (Google turns up downloads and info easily!), which is actually just the program I use for digital paintings and such. When I started making the game I got acquainted with the 'binary' tool, which is one of the only ways to draw pixels without anti-aliasing in the program. It's not much for spriting, but I use it a lot for other drawings and so I know my way around pretty okay. I just draw all the pictures in that program using the palette as my colour wheel! c:

When it comes to larger images like backdrops and portraits, I just try and paint with the binary tool. The smaller sprites are more pixel-by pixel, which I'm not as satisfied with. Some parts of tilesets were more painted, though, if they were small enough or allowed for it. It takes up more space in a tileset to not have.. tiling tiles, obviously. XD

Like, for example, this house set is just all painted, and I like it better than what I'm able to make with pixel-by-pixel work. I need to practice a bit. However, when I drew this I also messed up the grid I was working with, so the objects such as the tables and couch were too large and I needed to scale them down- a process Paint Tool SAI couldn't do without making then fuzzy, so they look less clean right now. :C

Just a tumbleweed!
