i'd just like to point out, that if you're trying to preserve the integrity of the fights then you should also put the status effects back on, since they shouldn't have been taken away in all but that 1 fight.

I agree, but that's way more trouble than it's worth to me, and it's looking like I'll lose those battles regardless.
