Auditions for the New Voulton

Post by Gizmog »

In this thread, I'm going to post different ideas for my next character and see what sticks. First up, Summer L'Orange the Elan Monk.

I picked Elan because they let me get into the psionic stuff without wasting a feat or a class level, and being able to not eat and drink is boss for a monk. They're an aberration but the picture in the Monster section of the SRD makes 'em look like regular people so I don't know wtf. I did use one of the Variant Monk Styles on the SRD to fill out some feats too, which may or may not be allowable. Maybe I'm just spoiled from Voulton, but I worry that it might not do enough damage. I dunno. Also feels like I might have too much money? I fear I've been wrong about monk being a weak class.

Also feel weird taking Knowledge: Religion when I know nothing about D&D religion. Hard to roleplay.

The next candidate will probably be a rogue.

Monks do seem like they could be fun, if planed and played right.

Here is a Monk I rolled up at one point when I thought Rob might be in danger of death: Derring Minimus it has rather different focuses than yours

I am looking forward to seeing your Rogue. I want to see you playing a clever evil character >:)

I'm going to have to confess: I'm a speed demon. That is the one number I look at and I'm like "Ohh, it's gotta go higher", even to the detriment of other things. I love to see that he's tiny! My other big disappointment is that there aren't enough large or tiny races to go around.

Well, it's interesting what happens when you give your character knowledges out of your normal scope of personal knowledge. You learn more yourself. Once things like the general layout of Mechanus or who the lords of the nine layers of hell are become relevant to your character you tend to pay more attention.

That said, a rogue sounds great. It's certainly one of the biggest things missing from the party. Think of those chests in Nath's lair that got left behind or the traps that held everything up so very much, almost killing people several times.
Honestly, the last thing the party needs is a pure melee character. If we look at the 4 character arch types, Rachelle is the fighter, kalar is the cleric, lynda is closest to a rogue, and rob is the closet to a wizard. Lynda and Rob are clearly the weakest in their roles. However, with Kalar acting as more of a wizard than a cleric at most times, a rogue is what the party seems to need most.

Agreed, rogues rule and I was thinking about those traps. Like that room with the electricity had us totally dumbfounded. And finding secret doors and rooms and slime. I think that's a role I can fill well, but now the question is what kind of rogue and what kinda crazy slime should I try? I have ideas, some of them even good!

Agreed, a rogue would indeed be most useful. We do have a rogue in Hrulgin, but A) he's not a good trapfinding/disabling rogue, and B) we have no idea if we'll ever see him again.

Traps have really hurt us so far, so definitely someone sneaky with a lot of ranks in Search, Disable Device, and Spot. Alternatively of course, you could go in the other direction and have a stab-happy evil slime who's just looking for a chance to slit everyone's throats in the night to take their stuff =p

You guys DO have nice stuff and tender necks. My current theory is leaning towards somethin' ranged in terms of combat, but the "Must be within 30 feet" rule for sneak attacks is pretty strict. I'll definitely be leanin towards paranoia, plenty of listens, spots, searches and disables. And if a throat or two gets slit, who am I to object?

Kalar doesn't have a tender neck. Though by now, the decomposition process might certainly have rendered it rather ripe. And silvery.

Can you Sneak Attack with a ballista or other siege weapon if you somehow manage to use it against someone within 30 feet?

That's an interesting question! I'm thinking not, as it's rather hard to be precise with such a thing... but the slimed up part is that it wouldn't really matter: A sneak attack with a pickle fork is as devastating as one with a nuclear bomb. It's the positioning of the blow that matters more than the ferocity. Like, a dude putting a toothpick into your eye is as bad as a dude puttin a flaming machete in there.

I think, strictly RAW, yes, it is possible to sneak attack with a ballista. I could be wrong though, I haven't really played too many rogues.

I'm thinking about a combo rogue/psychic warrior with the psionic shot feat, a guy who wakes up every morning just itching for an excuse to fire that first arrow of the day, knowing exactly where it's going to go and the world of hurting it's going to put someone into. But I don't remember if we were supposed to do psionic stuff and for all the trouble, I could just take more levels of rogue and do even grizzlier sneak attacks without havin to worry about that other stuff.

Spoony also had a delicious idea about a rogue/wizard doin sneak attacks with rays. I hate to give the inquisition more reason to be after us though. Haven't had time to run any numbers yet, but I'm gettin there.

There we go, H.P. Bilchik, Hunter of Men and Psychic Sniper to the Stars! I didn't describe him physically but I'm tired as hell.
