Found my old 2001 era OHRRPGCE project

Post by Foxley »

Oh man. I found some old CDs that were in a box in my mom's garage when I was visiting for Labor Day weekend... Was going through them last night before bed, and one of them has an unfinished, never released project that I worked on for several months when I was around 16-17. I'm at work now, but I'll post it when I'm home this evening, if anyone is interested (the OHRRPGCE version is "handshake" if I remember right). I did a lot of text, backstory and town building stuff but there's no combat situations.

Even though it's old as heck I'm actually not at all embarassed by it. I think I had a pretty good foundation for a game. But of course my project management and self discipline was totally nonexistent when I was in my teens, so it didn't take off.

Ooh! I love finding old files that I thought were lost.

I look forward to seeing it.

I'm sure it will be inspirational. I'll definitely check it out.

I found ANOTHER game I had started developing, around 2002-2003 looks like. This one is just an intro with really basic plotscripting (I sucked at it 12 years ago too, apparently) and I remember I was going to make it a silly joke game prodding at RPG tropes, etc. etc. I probably thought the stuff was pretty clever at the time, anyways.

I'll upload these pretty soon. Going to see if I can update them to Beelzebufo without destroying them, so people can play it without DOSbox.

Also, I know for a fact that the very first game I started working on in late 1998 when I was 13 doesn't exist anymore. My older sister was borrowing the computer I had at the time and decided to delete huge amounts of stuff me and my other sister had worked on, including the OHRRPGCE folder with some fun .BAM files we collabed on in NOTATE.EXE. Sucks, but oh well.

Okay, here we go. It's working with Beelzebufo, looks like. Enjoy (...?)

Yay digital archaeology!

A lot of really old OHR games have disappeared off the internet. So other people's games which you find on old disks would also interesting to share.

Unfortunately, the aforementioned computer that got wiped by my older sister was the one that had a pretty sizeable stockpile of OHRRPGCE demos I downloaded circa 1998-1999. All gone now, of course. :(

I played a bit of both files today, those are interesting, thank you for sharing them!

I laughed at the bit where the king incinerates the blue-haired adventurer.

Speaking of ancient games, I may have shared this before, but I recently dug up an rpg file that I thought I had lost.

This was my cousin's unfinished viking-themed game, which I think was the second ever .rpg file, after wander.rpg

I kinda liked the small touch of how the guy who just inherited a sword and hasn't practiced with it starts at Level 1 while the academically-trained wizard begins at Level 2, even though they both have no stats in anything.

Wasn't there a screenshot from it in Test.RPG? I'm going to give this game a shot too.

And now I really, really wish I hadn't developed the habit of deleting projects I decided were hopeless. One of them was a complete game and another was a much longer project than most of the other things I've ever uoloaded anywhere.

Would be really nice if I could find some of my own old, lost, mostly-forgotten projects -- I know I've had literally dozens of them over the years, some of which never got much further than a new RPG file and maybe a map or two and others would've been at least hour-long demos. Apparently my dad still has an old computer that may have had some of my very first OHR projects on it back in the day, so if the hard drive still works I might end up digging through that and seeing what I can find.

Aside from that, though, there's not really any hope of ever rediscovering any of these (unless somebody, when digging through their old files, happens to find a copy of the Staff of Parupoo demo -- I think that was the only one of my lost projects that I ever had uploaded anywhere, but it was only on my old website which is now long gone. I think I'd already given up on it by the time Castle Paradox showed up in... 2003 or so?... so I never uploaded what I had done of it there.)

There was one game I put on CastleParadox sometime between Wolf's Quest and my initial ban, then took down after the ban. Its filename was Sample2.RPG and its long name was Samplara. I thought it was funny and somewhat fun, but for some reason I took it off the gamelist and deleted it from my (now long-since discarded) computer. I know it got a few downloads, but couldn't have been very many and I doubt anyone has a copy.

It was a short game and relied on a since-fixed glitch to complete. (there was a pushable NPC with touch-activated dialogue blocking your path; if you push him instead of talking to him he moves out of the way and you can step on the warp tile after fighting him. The "fix" that prevents NPCs from leaving a gap when they talk to you broke this.)

I didn't discover the ohr until 2011, so I'm kind of a noob, but I still have the first projects I ever worked on. There's a reason I gave up on this game, but it's actually much longer than I remember it being.
