Gimme things to draw for a general graphics set

Post by Feenicks »

RPG Maker comes with a set of default graphics; while all of the iterations of them are fairly generic, they are at least pretty comprehensive, allowing for a good variety of settings to be made with them.

In the wake of Vikings more or less dying*, I've been meaning to make something along vaguely similar lines; that is, draw a set of graphics [walkabouts, tilesets, enemies, etc.] that could provide a good variety in environments and allow one to just pick them up and make a game with them.
There's several settings I definitely want to get in this [towns, generic dungeons, forests, the obligatory sci-fi stuff]... but what other stuff should I make sure gets into this?

*Yeah, the graphics are there... but I'm not completely convinced it works as a base tileset, seeing as half the enemy graphics in it are cameos and a good portion of the tile pages are disorganized.

That would be awesome! There are a bunch of graphics that people have given away, but they're very rarely close to a complete set, and they usually mesh with each other quite badly. Aside from Vikings I guess the other thing worth mentioning is BMR's huge collection of (mostly interior) tilesets and other graphics. But that's only suitable for walk-tall walkabouts, and I think doesn't have many of other auxiliary tiles you would need.

Also walkabout templates? If you create a new .rpg file with a recent copy of custom you will see a ghastly default walkabout set and tile 0 that I added. I figured that if you create a new .rpg file and launch it you should at least be able to tell that you're walking around an empty map.

Yes, beach settings are pretty common, and could double as a desert tileset (although most real deserts are not covered in sand dunes).

There are also a lot of different types of towns for different surroundings (forest glades, deserts, snowy, but I don't think it's worthwhile drawing different graphics for them) and different time periods and styles (modern suburban, modern urban, medieval, primitive huts, etc). I think the style of buildings available would be a big constraint on what games you could actually make with it, so there's that.

I was trying to make a set and going out of my way to stick to more generic fantasy themes and attempting to give every creature full support in terms of walkabout, hero, and enemy sprites. I ran out of steam.

One of the hardest things to make is battle backgrounds. Backgrounds for generic settings like forest, plains, water, cave, indoors, the schoolyard? Or you could draw a super ambiguous battle background that could serve as a one-size-fits-all for any battle situation.

What if other people contributed to your effort by copying the existing art style? If more people want to contribute graphics then it would be pretty cool if they were to fit well with each other, and we can end up with something more comprehensive.

Also! Competitive Collab Contest
This thing is technically still ongoing, so if anyone wants to contribute graphics then that's a good excuse!

Okay, I got a palette together [which totally isn't one of my former palettes added to a bit]; might need to add a bit more to it down the road depending if these colors aren't enough for some things I need, but for now this should be fine.

I'm probably going to start by putting together a style guide, both for my own benefit and for anyone who decides to help along the way.

As for what I'm going to start with? Probably going to start fairly generic and go with a forest tileset, honestly. Want to make the more interesting stuff (which includes Giz's beach tileset) when I have a firmer grasp on how I want things to look.

Remake all of these in a more good/distinctive way.

I... haven't done very much pixel art for this just yet, but at least I have the default characters more or less down.

Very nice! I was not expecting going the extra mile to create concept art for an art pack.
