Ep1cQuest - Proem Pack

Post by Ep1cLuis »

Hello!

This post is here to introduce my first OHRRPGCE game, its current art, plot and features.

Overview:

Ep1cQuest is a concept which mixes reality with fiction storytelling, music and gaming. Its gameplay is mostly based in understanding the stories and solving puzzles, while also keeping in mind all classical RPG features such as battling and completing epic quests.

Plot:

Huge. The game is originally based in novels, and hence is divided in various parts, in this case, called Proems, because this game is made to explain the origin of most things that happened after year 2021, the year where Ep1cQuest, the sequel of this game, takes place.

The first Proem that the player can play is called "A World Without Red", based in the teen life of Enzo Fox, a character who has Daltonism. The story starts presenting a slightly Epic and Mysterious mood, and then progresses to Romantic Love in its sequel (also included in this game).

The full story was already thought, but it's still to be completed. Ask in this thread for some more information/spoilers.

Features:
  • - This game's two strongest points are the storyline and the music. You'll enjoy it if you like to watch movies.

    - Solve puzzles and get thrilled by solving mysteries (That feeling of "OH, that makes sense!").

    - Combat, leveling system, melee and shooting weapons and elemental damage all included. Over 50 attacks, 5 heroes, and a huge deal of weapons. Weapons have different properties depending on their material. Some common materials are various metallic chemical elements (From which one of the best things you could get is a Platinum one.) and metal alloys. Crafting implemented in most game modes.

    - Classic Aenel, an iconic feature of the Ep1cQuest world, is also implemented in this game. Aenel is a gambling card game where you receive two cards and then must try to obtain two cards that match those. Your opponents are smart NPCs. Each character has a different artificial intelligence system.

    - This game comes with an Extras section where you can talk to the developers and find out about facts, conspiracy theories about the game's storyline, and listen to every musical track in the game, also being able to find information about each track.

    - Theres a chance that I'll make a version of the game with MP3 music instead of MIDI music, by converting every MIDI file to MP3, improving the soundfont.

    - Not all musical tracks are original, but all were remixed to match the game before being included.

    - Dungeoneering Mode is a mini-game included in this game where the player is able to explore Dungeons while helping the characters unique to those worlds, all in an engineered simulation. This was implemented because the Proem Mode is drastically more realistic and there's less combat.

    - Fight for Fun mode also lets you have matches with the game's characters without any need to read textboxes or anything. Includes 3 different types of combat, which are the classic RPG fight, Aenel, and Musical Duel.

    - Comes with a modding pack, which has the game's scripts and documentation.

    - A menu based Inventory system. Here you store Special Items, Edible and non-Edible Items, and Weapons.

    - May be dubbed into other languages. My native language is Spanish, and the Ep1cQuest world also has unique languages that I made up. You'll find out more about that during gameplay.
Some screenshots:

Enzo's house in 1999, still very scratchy and unfurnished. In the story, this house was restored from a cement building a long time ago, which explains why parts of it are made with wood. Its also missing the doors.

The same house being seen in its second level.

Beautiful rug tiles:

Textboxes. Blue and red texboxes are Informative, while black ones are Dialogue boxes, and White ones express a character's thoughts.

Image

Using the Cell Phone to keep track of your location during A World Without Red. The phone comes with 3 different Map modes. This image is still scratch, or maybe I'll leave it like that due to the fact that its a 1999 (E1Q years) phone, which has less colors. (But has a GPS?)

Thank you! Please give me feedback in this post. Feel free to ask questions, make comments, add ideas or ask about myself.[/b]

Sounds interesting. I'd love to see those screenshots but your links seem to be broken.

E: Mogri is right, problem is on my side. I can see the screenshots fine in a different browser.

You know, I voted turn-based, but the thing is, I'm fine with turn-based OR wait-time battles. Basically setting the options in the game to pause on all battle menus. Do what you need to, though.

They work for me, but they're BMP files. You might need a different browser to see them.

More information!

Post by Ep1cLuis »

Finally, more information!

Screenshots:

The Welcome Screen. (Note: Due to the fact that the game must save the location of the player in every Proem, you aren't allowed to automatically resume your adventure without first specifying which proem are you going to run.)

Image

A regular Aenel game. You can observe that the player received two random cards, and that one must then use number keys to interact the game. Your opponents also make smart comments about the status of the game, such as telling you that you took too much time to achieve a card, or that they did, or maybe they tell you that you made a terrible move, etc.

Another little detail is the fact that if one of your Icon Cards matches one of your Target Cards, both matching cards will have a tiny flashing light next to them.

The buttons on the down right corner Might be clickable buttons in the future.

Theres still a glitch where the choice boxes would appear below the Status strings in the middle; I still don't know how I'll fix this.

Image

You don't want to see this textbox :P

Image

The spell list is divided in two sections, one for those attacks that target enemies, and one for those attacks that target allies or yourself. The icons next to each spell express its main function (for example, a spell marked with a white heart cures the target. A spell marked with a black heart hurts the target.)

Image

Average stats. Accuracy and Evasion only change during combat, and their base is always 100. Exceptions occur very rarely.

Information:

The battle system will now be turn-based.

The game's first demonstrative release will be available the next week. It may not include much character graphics, but it will have playable content and the "taste" one can expect of the gameplay. It will come with a full implementation of Aenel with two opponents to demonstrate their difference in AI. Its also going to contain various battles, and a beta version of the Ep1cQuest Handbook, a lightweight Java program which has walkthroughs and facts about the game.

The next post will have a sketch of the title screen.

This looks like it will be interesting! When can we expect a demo? :)

So, my laptop's power adapter died this weekend, and, hell, it's a really expensive thing. I no longer have savings...

And I did my best to finish some more content, including the following:

- Short Ep1cQuest Medley: Will Include Enzo's Ballad 1, 2 and 3, plus some other tracks for A World Without Red. (YouTube Link will be edited into/placed here soon)

- The scripting of the card game took a LONG while to finish, specially because I misplaced a parenthesis somewhere and I had to take an hour to find it. But a demo's coming in about one or two days! With some classical music.

- Full description, philosophy and story(ies) of the game can now be found

Here. (You like the way I write story summaries? :) That's actually way too long to be a summary. If you read that, I'm also afraid you spoiled part of your experience...)

I know that maybe I've shown very little information and progress, and you don't know me well (yet) but, trust me, I've had the idea to make this project since 2012, and since then, I haven't stopped working.

Thanks for your attention!
