MP3 importing problem

Post by The Wobbler »

I've used plenty of MP3s in OHR games before. Tonight, I try importing some, the first four work smoothly, the fifth sends the engine's file type converter into an insane panic, opening and closing repeatedly until I press escape. When it finally stops freaking out, I go to the slot where the newly imported sound should be, and... I've got another copy of an earlier sound file in its place. Anyone else seen this?

It's happening whether I import them as sound effects or music. Importing .oggs seems to work, but I really don't want to manually convert 181 files.

This happens to me all the time, especially when I try to import sound effects. It's gotten to the point where I find myself trying to "skillfully" tap the Enter button just to make sure I don't send CUSTOM into a frenzy. I have a feeling it has something to do with a wait somewhere, since it only happens on occasion. In any case, the problem is so common that I've grown to dread the moment that I need to add a new song or sound effect to the engine.

So, yeah, you're definitely not alone on this.

It happens to me too. If you just keep letting it reload, eventually it will work out OK. Definitely a bug that needs fixing, though.

I got tired of dealing with it, so I downloaded Audacity, and it makes OGG files and they import perfectly. If you get impatient, use that. It's easy.

I let it keep running and while it DID work, it imported the wrong file.

I always use Audacity. I just used it to record 180 MP3s. Reopening and converting each one will take forever.

I thought this problem was fixed. This used to happen to me, but it hasn't for a while now.

I was using an older nightly, downloaded the newest one, same issue.

Is this another form of Bug 826?
http://rpg.hamsterrepublic.com/bugzilla ... cgi?id=826

There are a couple of workarounds indicated on that page to maybe try for the short-term.

i have only ever had the problem with .wav sound effects just failing to import at all.

you can always convert everything to .ogg beforehand in audacity, although thats not super convenient.

maybe someone could write some sort of batch file to convert all of the files in a folder to ogg, or perhaps theres a utility that already does this?

at least until custom gets it goin right, haha.

I've definitely seen this bug before, though with WAV files rather than MP3s.

Just a random thought: since the problem is the program thinking you're holding down Enter, couldn't this be temporarily "sorta half-fixed" just by changing the import music/sound setup a bit? Maybe make it so that instead of the cursor staying on "import" after you've imported a file (where the "hold down Enter" effect makes it repeatedly import the first file in the directory over and over), it could move up automatically to select the song/sound name instead, where pushing Enter does nothing.

The program would still think you're pounding the Enter key as fast as you can, but at least that way it'd be doing it in a place where Enter doesn't actually do anything... so it wouldn't get in the way of people importing their sound files.

While we're on this bug, another one that's popped up for me a lot lately is that CUSTOM will sometimes be under the impression that I am holding down a key. (I can't remember which) Usually this happens in the middle of writing text, and a bunch of 3s or something will appear. Saving an quitting stops it, but I have to fix the text that got messed up.

That sounds separate from the import problem (unless it happens after importing)

Does tapping the "stuck" key unstick it?

As for <a href="http://rpg.hamsterrepublic.com/bugzilla ... d=826">bug 826</a> workarounds, I use <a href="http://sox.sourceforge.net/">SOX</a> when I want to batch convert large numbers of wav or mp3 files into ogg. Unfortunately, sox is a fairly complex command-line utility, and you have to know a little shell scripting or Batch language to be able to use it effectively.

I just went searching for something easier, and I found something good. The combination of LameDropXP and OggDropXP make it quite easy to convert a large number of mp3 files into ogg format. (and in spite of the fact that the website for these tools describes them as being for "experienced" users, they are both insanely easy to use.)

http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lamedrop.php
http://www.rarewares.org/ogg-oggdropxpd.php

* Get both LameDrop and OggDrop
* Run LameDrop
* Drag and drop all your mp3 files onto LameDrop, and it will make WAV copies of all of them.
* Run OggDrop
* Drag and drop all of the new WAV files onto OggDrop and it will make ogg copies of all of them
* Right-click and pick close on each of the droppers when you are finished
* Throw away the WAV files if you don't want to waste the space.

I get a similar bug in the graphics editors, every so often if I close then reopen the window, CUSTOM will think I'm holding down caps lock and usually messes up my image as it gets clipped to death by the boarder.

Capslock is another issue. The gfx_sdl backend treats the capslock key differently than it does other keys.

My solution for that is that I need to completely stop using the capslock key for any purpose whatsoever, and I need to pick some other key to replace it in the sprite editor. (suggestions welcome)

Numpad panning would be nice (but the do-ablity may be based off wheather or not the numpad is treated seperately to the number/arrow keys)
