2009 48 Hour Contest

Post by Meatballsub »

The rules have changed (last edited 11/30 @ 11PM EST). Please review them below.

Since it appears that DjFenix will not be making it happen this year, I have decided to take it upon myself to keep the decade-long tradition going.

That’s right, the 2009 48 Hour Contest.

RULES AND DETAILS

So the holidays are coming up and it might be difficult for many to commit time to create a game, even in just 48 hours. That’s why there will be three different start dates throughout December where you can start and finish a game. It doesn’t matter if you choose the first, second, or last start date. All entries will be voted on together at the end of the contest.

December 5 - 12AM EST to December 6 11:59PM EST

December 12 - 12AM EST to December 13 11:59PM EST

And December 19 - 12AM EST to December 20 11:59PM EST
  • - You must use the OHRRPGCE.

    - Graphics will not be ripped from other games, but new, premade graphics are allowed as long as they fit the theme of the contest.

    - Pre-made scripts and music are allowed.
THEME
The theme(s) of the contest will be announced a few minutes before each starting period and will be found in new topics on CP and SS.

VOTING

Voting will start on December 21 and end on December 30.

RESULTS

The results will be tallied and published in January’s issue of Hamsterspeak.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Each date will have a specific .RPG file that you must download and use in order to make your project eligible for the contest.

As a cheating deterrent, this is no longer nearly as effective as it used to be.

What outside work can be used? Are premade graphics allowed? Premade music? Premade scripts? What if I want to use VoM graphics? Etc. etc.

Since i'm an idiot and went ahead and posted the theme, I am going to have to change it up some.

I have updated the rules and stuff above, which should answer most of the questions you had.

As much as i like the challange, I probably wont be entering this unless I get alot of work done on Dawn first. December release is coming up fast!

EDIT: Do we have to use the ohr? And is ripped music allowed? just in case :P

The three different periods are a nice idea, but they're all Thursday/Fridays, so it actually doesn't help much :v:.

Why not a Thursday/Friday, Friday/Saturday (that's what I'd like myself...), and Saturday/Sunday period?

Doesn't allowing premade graphics, scripts, etc. sort of kill the point?

Previous 48hr contests have traditionally allowed at least graphics and music. The theme is hidden, so the best you can do is have stock graphics ready. Allowing premade scripts lets you do stuff like use the SS101 library, which I think is good.

Previous 48 hour contests? I know previous (different) contests have allowed premade graphics, but I can't remember the 48 hour contest ever doing that. I'll still probably enter regardless though, it mostly depends on how much time Wiz and I have that last weekend.

They are actually all supposed to be Fridays/Saturdays. I figured weekends would probably work best for most people, so I will probably keep it that way.

You must use the OHR and ripped music is allowed.

Exactly. Also, even if I said premades weren't allowed, people could still do them. It's not like I can block out imports (to my knowledge anyways).

But like Moog said, the best it will do you is for general "stock" graphics. Not knowing the theme will hinder you making too much progress before the contest.

I'm thinking about getting those who are interested in a particular contest period to contact me by mail the day/night before and then I will privately send the contestants the theme, and then reveal each theme when the entire contest is over.

I'd really rather you reveal the theme at contest time. That way, if it's particularly interesting, contestants can join on a whim.

I'll think about it. I actually had a reason of doing it that way, but it would probably attract more contestants if I were to publicly announce the themes. I'll let you know.

Okay, I might be wrong, but isn't this theme WAY late?
